Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1916 edition. Excerpt: ... tation. Models were made capable of flying distances and with durations that, to the early flyers, seemed impossible. In the hand launched contests models were flown for distances ranging from 2000 to 2500 feet, the winning flight being 3537 feet, and it might also be said that the contestant who flew this model, with a model of the same design established a duration record of 195 seconds. As this goes to press, information is received that the World's Record for distance for hand launched models has been broken by Thomas Hall, of Chicago, 111., an Illinois Model Aero Club member, with a flight of 5337 feet. Another interesting result of the competition was the establishing of a world hydroaeroplane record by a member of the Illinois Model Aero Club with a model of the tractor type, a four-bladed propeller being used in connection with the model. The flying boat which is a late advent to the field of model flying also proved a record breaker in this competition, having remained in the air after rising from the surface of the water, for a duration of 43 seconds. This model was flown by a member of the Pacific Northwest Model Aero Club of Seattle, Washington. The establishing of these records clearly indicates the advantage of scientific designing and construction and careful handling. So satisfactory have been the results of the First National Model Aeroplane Competition that the Aero Club of America has made arrangements for holding the Second National Model Aeroplane Competition during the year 1916. But in the announcement of the Second National Competition the Aero Club of America has made provision for the holding of contests for mechanically driven models, in view of the interest which is being shown by model flyers in the...

Easy rules for selecting the right power system, gas or electric. When it makes sense to use one of the innovative KFm airfoils. Pros and cons of canard and multi-wing configurations. A step-by-step design process that includes goal setting and flight testing. In-depth discussions of important topics like airfoils and wing design. The sources of air drag and how to minimize their impact. ADVANCE PRAISE "This book is a joy to read! The writing style and wit add dimension in a way that is rarely found in today's reference materials. If someone has considered designing their own airplane and been put off because of complicated formulas, vocabulary and reference style that would bore even an engineer, this will convince them to go ahead and try it. Written with real people in mind and not engineers - and I mean that in a good way. This is a book that will reside along the other favorites on my bookshelf. Carlos really managed to produce a book that will last a long time and become one of the standards for modelers." - Greg Gimlick, Electrics columnist, Model Aviation magazine "RCAdvisor's Model Airplane Design Made Easy is the ultimate model airplane design book for both beginning and experienced modelers." - Richard Kline, Inventor, KFm airfoils "RCadvisor's Model Airplane Design Made Easy is a real contribution to the world's literature on the subject. It provides an excellent bridge between full scale aviation and aeromodeling, showing the relationship between the two, for better understanding of the differences and similarities which should be applied for good model performance. While thorough in detail, the book is also easily readable so that the information is simple to understand. It is a very good combination of theory and practical application. Nicely illustrated, the book is also full of common sense explanations and references to other sources of information." - John Worth, former President and Executive Director of the AMA "Carlos Reyes personably leads the reader through some basic aerodynamics, materials considerations, electric power system planning and a practical application of theory as it is applied to a finished flying model. The background history of various types of aircraft shows the development of aviation and how it relates to the models that we build and fly today, as well as how models have influenced general aviation. It is always exciting to find some 'new to me' concepts and theories, and there were several in this well-written narrative." - Ken Myers, Editor, Ampeer electric flight newsletter "No matter how long you've been aeromodelling, or what your interests are in our great hobby, the greatest thrill of all is standing behind a unique model that you've designed and built yourself, from a blank sheet of paper - or even a blank CAD file - and preparing to make that first take off. So sit yourself down in a comfy chair, read RCadvisor's Model Airplane Design Made Easy and set off on aeromodelling's greatest adventure. Let Carlos Reyes - an aeromodeller of long standing and great talent - take you through the mysteries of how to arrive at the point that every lover of model aircraft should experience." - Dereck Woodward, aeromodeller, designer and magazine writer for the past fifty years

Book excerpt: In the simplest, clearest terms, with an abundance of illustrations, this book explains the theory, construction, installation and operation of all types of aircraft engines and of propellers. It is thoroughly authoritative. It gives all the specific instruction needed to pass the written examinations for the C.A.A. engine mechanic's certificate in 1948. In addition it supplies any interested layman with an exceptionally clear explanation of modern developments such as jet propulsion, gas turbines and the new prop-jet engine as well as of internal combustion aircraft engines. The book is outstandingly practical and easy to understand. Large, clear drawings and photographs take the place of lengthy explanations, and the use of confusing formulas and tables is avoided. Separate chapters explain in detail just how cylinders, crank-shafts, ignition systems, engine instruments and all other parts of aircraft engines are constructed and how they work. There is much practical information on materials, parts and fastenings, common causes of failure, trouble symptoms, testing and repair. The function of each part in the engine as a whole and its relation to the structure and operation of the plane is emphasized throughout the book.In addition, the book includes all useful background information. There is a simple explanation of the metals and alloys used in the various parts of the aircraft engine. Preceding the explanation of the ignition system, there is a review of electrical fundamentals, and there is useful information on fuels and lubricants at appropriate points. A full glossary of terms is also included. To insure complete accuracy, the author has had each section of the book checked by leading manufacturers of the materials and parts under discussion. The author himself, as a former C.A.A. official and teacher, is thoroughly familiar with the requirements of the aircraft mechanic and with the best methods of instruction. The book is thus a completely authoritative and useful text for all those preparing for their aircraft mechanics' license, a practical handbook for the mechanic on the job, and an informative book for pilots, other flight personnel, and any aviation enthusiast.
