Book excerpt: Cette thèse traite de la modélisation et de la résolution numérique d'écoulements en présence d'une structure à la surface. On considère la problématique d'un objet flottant sur un grand domaine. Les écoulements sous la banquise et la production d'énergie renouvelable grâce à des bouées sont des applications potentielles de ce travail. Nous dérivons un modèle de type Saint-Venant avec une contrainte de congestion supplémentaire. La contrainte de congestion est un défi pour la résolution numérique d'équations hyperboliques. Nous proposons alors un modèle unifié basé sur une relaxation pseudo-compressible pour la résolution. Nous identifions les propriétés nécessaires à la résolution numérique et décrivons l'adaptation d'un schéma volumes finis. La préservation de l'état d'équilibre du lac au repos ainsi qu'une loi de dissipation pour l'énergie mécanique sont démontrées sous une condition non-restrictive sur le pas de temps. Pour prendre en compte un objet flottant librement, nous introduisons un couplage entre le modèle de Saint-Venant congestionné et les équations du mouvement données par le principe fondamental de la dynamique en nous concentrant sur l'énergie du système couplé. Cet aspect est en effet d'un intérêt majeur dans la production d'énergie. Un schéma de Newmark est utilisé pour le solide et couplé à la résolution numérique pour le fluide. Nous proposons une correction entropique basée sur un choix de discrétisation particulier des termes de couplage pour assurer une loi de dissipation au niveau discret. La méthode est validée en dimension un sur des solutions analytiques stationnaires et non-stationnaires.

Book excerpt: Negritude has been defined by Léopold Sédar Senghor as "the sum of the cultural values of the black world as they are expressed in the life, the institutions, and the works of black men." Sylvia Washington Bâ analyzes Senghor's poetry to show how the concept of negritude infuses it at every level. A biographical sketch describes his childhood in Senegal, his distinguished academic career in France, and his election as President of Senegal. Themes of alienation and exile pervade Senghor's poetry, but it was by the opposition of his sensitivity and values to those of Europe that he was able to formulate his credo. Its key theme, and the supreme value of black African civilization, is the concept of life forces, which are not attributes or accidents of being, but the very essence of being. Life is an essentially dynamic mode of being for the black African, and it has been Senghor's achievement to communicate African intensity and vitality through his use of the nuances, subtleties, and sonorities of the French language. Book excerpt: Since the middle of the 20th Century yield design approaches have been identified with the lower and upper bound theorem of limit analysis theory – a theory associated with perfect plasticity. This theory is very restrictive regarding the applicability of yield design approaches, which have been used for centuries for the stability of civil engineering structures. This book presents a theory of yield design within the original “equilibrium/resistance” framework rather than referring to the theories of plasticity or limit analysis; expressing the compatibility between the equilibrium of the considered structure and the resistance of its constituent material through simple mathematical arguments of duality and convex analysis results in a general formulation, which encompasses the many aspects of its implementation to various stability analysis problems. After a historic outline and an introductory example, the general theory is developed for the three-dimensional continuum model in a versatile form based upon simple arguments from the mathematical theory of convexity. It is then straightforwardly transposed to the one-dimensional curvilinear continuum, for the yield design analysis of beams, and the two-dimensional continuum model of plates and thin slabs subjected to bending. Field and laboratory observations of the collapse of mechanical systems are presented along with the defining concept of the multi-parameter loading mode. The compatibility of equilibrium and resistance is first expressed in its primal form, on the basis of the equilibrium equations and the strength domain of the material defined by a convex strength criterion along with the dual approach in the field of potentially safe loads, as is the highlighting of the role implicitly played by the theory of yield design as the fundamental basis of the implementation of the ultimate limit state design (ULSD) philosophy with the explicit introduction of resistance parameters.
