Book excerpt: The purpose of this thesis is to develop a constitutive equation for thermoplastic composite components in crash situations. The need for using lightweight composite absorbing structures in passenger cars, is exposed. This requires development of simulation tools to evaluate, optimize and validate the design of these structures. An experimental program is undertaken to measure the mechanical properties of a thermoplastic composite material. The experimental data is gathered on tension, compression, and shear tests. A wide range of strain rates are investigated due to advanced tests rigs including a crossbow machine and Digital Image Correlation technique. Those experiments allow identifications of the material degradation behavior. A bibliography covering existing models is then presented. A new constitutive equation using a mesoscopic description of composite medium is proposed; an interface and a ply models are defined. The ply description uses a biphasic decomposition, fibers and matrix are separately modeled. The microbuckling is included in the ply model allowing sensitive description of compressive behaviors. The model identification is presented using previously gathered data. An implementation in ABAQUS software using FORTRAN interface VUMAT is developed. Finally, some crash simulations are proposed and confronted to testing data. Those covers crush tests on coupons, and a tubular structure. The results shows mostly a good agreement with the experimental data. The model performance is then discussed.

One of the results of the committee's work is a state-of-the-art report, which will be presented orally as a General Report at the International Symposium ISAP '86, and will be printed either in the RILEM journal Materials and Structures or separately. Several test recommendations have been elaborated and will be prepared as drafts for the participants ofISAP '86. These are: - direct tensile test - pull-off test - direct shear test - slant shear test - four-point bending test - dynamic loading test - thermal compatibility test (two versions) - injectibility test.
