Book excerpt: Ce travail de thèse s'est concentré sur la modélisation de l'effet d'un couvert de neige saisonnier sur le comportement thermique de grands ouvrages de génie civil construits dans les régions nordiques, ainsi qu'à son application sur des ouvrages construits avec des matériaux à grande porométrie. À l'heure actuelle, la présence de neige est souvent négligée dans les simulations numériques de régimes thérmiques, sauf pour les études portant sur les avalanches ou le régime nival qui utilisent des modèles conceptuels ou des modèles très détaillés, basés sur la physique. L'utilisation des modèles très détaillés dans l'industrie n'est pas avantageuse pour modéliser de grands ouvrages de génie civil en raison du grand nombre d'équations différentielles partielles et de paramètres parfois difficiles à estimer. De plus, l'introduction de la neige comme un milieu dans le domaine de calcul impose de grands défis pour les simulations en continu sur plusieurs années, car, comme la neige est saisonnière, le domaine qui représente la neige doit être éliminé après sa fonte. À cet égard, l'objectif principal de cette recherche est de développer un nouvel outil pour modéliser, en continu sur plusieurs années, l'effet thermique d'un couvert de neige sur des ouvrages de génie civil, qui puisse être aisément appliqué dans des cas pratiques. Pour cela, les transferts de chaleur et de masse dans la neige ont été étudiés afin d'identifier les modes de transfert qui ont une influence significative sur la température du sol. Ensuite, un outil numérique dans le logiciel FlexPDE a été établi pour modéliser le transfert de chaleur par conduction et convection, entre le sol, la neige et l'atmosphère en continu sur toute l'année. Cet outil considère également l'effet de la neige (frontière fermée ou ouverte) sur la convection dans des matériaux granulaires grossiers, et l'effet de la pluie et du changement de phase de l'eau sur le bilan d'énergie du couvert de neige. Cet outil emploie la méthode du bilan d'énergie de surface qui est considéré comme étant une condition aux limites de Neumann pour la température. L'outil a également servi à réaliser une analyse thermique d'un barrage en remblai et à démontrer la présence des cellules de convection dans l'enrochement et l'influence de la convection d'air sur l'extraction de chaleur de la fondation. Un autre objectif de cette recherche est d'établir un modèle simple et précis de la conductivité thermique pour tous les types de neige, y compris la neige artificiellement manipulée et compactée. La plupart des modèles existants de la conductivité thermique de la neige sont développés grâce à des techniques de régression qui ont l'inconvénient de ne pas respecter les limites physiques de la neige. Pour intégrer ces limites physiques dans un modèle simple, le concept de conductivité thermique relative est utilisé dans cette étude. Ce modèle est examiné avec des données publiées et réévaluées et avec les résultats de tests effectués au laboratoire de l'Université Laval. Le modèle proposé permet d'estimer la conductivité thermique de tous les types de neige, et ce, avec une grande fiabilité.
