Book excerpt: In this dissertation we propose a protocol for Mobility Management in Multi-Hop Heterogeneous Wireless Networks (MHWN) for seamless mobility in an integrated cellular and ad-hoc network. The protocol describes techniques for tracking a mobile node in an integrated architecture with minimum overhead. This scheme is independent of the routing protocol used in a multi-hop network. Using MHWN a node can migrate from a single-hop network to a multi-hop connectivity seamlessly. We use predictive techniques to further improve the end-to-end connection quality. A connection evaluation metric is developed to enable a mobile node to select the best network when multiple networks are available. We also develop an analytical model to evaluate the performance of multi-hop networks and analyze the performance of multi-hop networks under different network scenarios.

The ability to provide a seamless transition across heterogeneous networks will enable a new level of customer experience. This thesis contributes to the evolution of technology convergence by improving different aspects of the vertical handover management to make seamless mobility a reality. In the first part of the thesis, we emphasize on the role of user control in the mobility management. We show how users with their smart mobile terminals can overcome some obstacles in the vertical handover management and improve its performance. We propose a terminal-controlled handover management which is built on the top of a new utility-based access network selection. The terminal is shown to be able to control its radio interface to optimize the power consumption as well as to control the handover initiation or handover preparation to ensure seamless services. We develop a new handover prediction scheme to assist the handover preparation at the application level by the terminal itself. In the second part of the thesis, we consider the role of network control in the inter-system mobility management. We study a UMTS-WiMAX interworking solution including integration architecture, handover procedure, intersystem measurement and required cell overlap for seamless handovers. We also study the interworking and roaming solution across independent access networks using intermediary entities. Last contributions include a new load definition, a new load balancing index and a new algorithm which can hide the heterogeneities of different access technologies from the load balancing.

Book excerpt: Mobility management over heterogeneous wireless networks is becoming a major interest area as new technologies and services continue to proliferate within the wireless networking market. In this context, seamless mobility is considered to be crucial for ubiquitous computing. Service providers aim to increase the revenue and to improve users' satisfaction. However there are still many technical and architectural challenges to overcome before achieving the required interoperability and coexistence of heterogeneous wireless access networks. Indeed, the context of wireless networks is offering multiple and heterogeneous technologies (e.g. 2G to 4G, WiFi, Wimax, TETRA,...). On the one hand, this rich environment allows users to take profit from different capacities and coverage characteristics. Indeed, this diversity can provide users with high flexibility and allow them to seamlessly connect at any time and any where to the access technology that best fits their requirements. Additionally, cooperation between these different technologies can provide higher efficiency in the usage of the scarce wireless resources offering more economic systems for network providers. On the other hand, the heterogeneity of technologies and architectures and the multiplication of networks and service providers creates a complex environment where cooperation becomes challenging at different levels including and not limited to mobility management, radio resource provisioning, Quality of Service and security guarantees. This thesis is focusing on mobility management and mainly on decision making for Vertical handover within heterogeneous wireless network environments. After the analysis of the related state of the art, we first propose a reputation based approach that allows fast vertical handover decision making. A decision making scheme is then built on that approach. Network's reputation, is a new metric that can be gathered from previous users' experiences in the networks. We show that it is an efficient construct to speed up the vertical handover decision making thanks to anticipation functionalities. While the main objective remains guaranteeing the best Quality of Service and optimal radio resource utilization, economical aspects have also to be considered including cost minimization for users and revenue maximization for network providers. For this aim, we propose, in the second part of the thesis, a game theoretic based scheme that allows maximizing benefits for both networks and users. In this solution, each available network plays a Stackelberg game with a finite set of users, while users are playing a Nash game among themselves to share the limited radio resources. A Nash equilibrium point, that maximizes the user's utility and the service provider revenue, is found and used for admission control and vertical handover decision making. The analyses of the optimal bandwidth/prices and the revenue at the equilibrium point show that there are some possible policies to use according to user's requirements in terms of QoS and to network capacities. For instance, we pointed out that networks having same capacities and different reputation values should charge users with different prices which makes reputation management very important to attract users and maximize networks' revenue. In the third part of this thesis, we provide and discuss two different architectural and implementation solutions on which our proposed vertical handover decision mechanisms can be integrated. The first proposed architecture is a centralized one. It is based on the IEEE 802.21 standard to which some extensions are proposed. The second proposed architecture is distributed. It is based on an overlay control level composed of two virtualization layers able to make reasoning on behalf of physical entities within the system. This architecture allows higher flexibility especially for loosely coupled interconnected networks.

Abstract: Abstract of the thesis entitled "Mobility and Radio Resource Management in Heterogeneous Wireless Networks" submitted by Xiaoshan Liu for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Hong Kong in October 2006 Future generation wireless communication systems are characterized by ubiquitous access and Quality of Service (QoS) guarantees. They consist of IP-based heterogeneous wireless networks (HWN) with overlaid coverage to provide users with a broad range of access services. In a wireless communication system, mobility and radio resource management are essential system functions to support seamless global roaming. However, the functions in HWN systems are very different from those employed in traditional homogeneous wireless networks, and presents new challenges. First, the complexity and large dimension of an HWN system adds to the latency of signaling when signals traverse the component networks. When mobile users make handoffs in HWN, long handoff delay and heavy packet loss will be caused by this prolonged signaling exchange, seriously compromising QoS. Second, every component network is deployed following its own architecture and the characteristics of its particular technology. Therefore, the underlying radio resource management (RRM) functions need to be coordinated in admission control to improve users' experience and system performance. In this study, we propose methods in architecture, protocol and algorithms to solve the above problems in an HWN system. We first introduce a mobility management architecture with an Edge Mobility Agent (EMA) to improve the performance of handoffs between different networks. In the architecture, an EMA is introduced at the edge of the low-tier network to provide a transition area for handoff signaling exchange that effectively eliminates delay and packet loss during a vertical handoff. We also propose a Service Differentiated Handoff Protocol (SDHP) to handle handoffs between cells of the same network. In SDHP, we classify connections' QoS requirements into two classes and propose to use different handoff schemes to handle these connections to satisfy their different QoS requirements. With SDHP, we strike a balance between users' handoff experience and efficiency of radio resource utilization. To optimize radio resource utilization and access selection, we propose two joint admission control schemes to allocate connection requests to different component networks. In one scheme, the bandwidth to be allocated for each user is adaptive to the current resource utilization of every access network. A profit function is established to evaluate the profits gained from a handoff and the target network is selected accordingly. In another scheme, we formulate the joint admission control problem as a Semi- Markov Decision Process, and employ bandwidth adaptation to improve users' experience. We propose to use multi-agent system reinforcement learning to optimize SMDP. With this method, the system will learn an optimal policy from its experience that matches the characteristics of system capacity and user traffic, and maximizes a policy-based system reward. With the above proposals in architecture, protocol and algorithms, we provide a solution combining mobility and radio resource management and realize seamless global roaming with QoS support in HWN systems. Book excerpt: The forthcoming fourth generation (4G) heterogeneous wireless networks are a mixture of overlapped networks using different wireless access technologies and addressing different needs from the users. Due to mobility, the users are able to switch connections among networks and hence to perform the so-called horizontal and vertical handoffs. The present thesis makes contributions to the field of mobility management with focus on handoff management and connection admission control in heterogeneous wireless networks. Two different integrated heterogeneous systems are investigated: 1) the interworking of cellular networks with wireless local area networks (WLANs) based on the I E E E 802.11 standard; 2) the interworking of cellular networks with wireless metropohtan area networks based on the I E E E 802.16e standard. To this end, first we develop a novel vertical handoff decision algorithm by modeling the vertical handoff problem as a Markov decision process. Our model considers the important tradeoff among the quality of service (QoS) of the connection and the signaling cost of performing a vertical handoff. We also take the connection duration into consideration for the handoff decision. Second, we propose an analytical model for admission control in c e l l u l a r / W L A N interworking and investigate the combination of different admission control policies. Our model considers mobihty of users, capacity and coverage of each network, admission policies, and QoS in terms of blocking and dropping probabilities. We introduce the concept of policy functions to model the admission control policies and formulate two different revenue maximization problems. T h i r d, we extend the virtual partitioning technique w i t h preemption for admission control in cellular/802.16e interworking.
