A very appealing research area in these environments has been the wireless ad hoc, sensor and mesh networks. These networks rely on ultra low powered processing nodes that sense surrounding environment temperature, pressure, humidity, motion or chemical hazards, etc. Moreover, the radio frequency (RF) transceiver nodes of such networks require the design of transmitter and receiver equipped with high performance building blocks including antennas, power and low noise amplifiers, mixers and voltage controlled oscillators. Nowadays, the researchers are facing several challenges to design such building blocks while complying with ultra low power consumption, small area and high performance constraints. CMOS technology represents an excellent candidate to facilitate the integration of the whole transceiver on a single chip. However, several challenges have to be tackled while designing and using nanoscale CMOS technologies and require innovative idea from researchers and circuits designers. While major researchers and applications have been focusing on RF wireless communication, optical wireless communication based system has started to draw some attention from researchers for a terrestrial system as well as for aerial and satellite terminals. This renewed interested in optical wireless communications is driven by several advantages such as no licensing requirements policy, no RF radiation hazards, and no need to dig up roads besides its large bandwidth and low power consumption. Our lives are made simpler by mobile communication, which also saves time and effort. A mobile phone, also known as a cell phone, hand phone, or mobile cellular network, is one type of mobile communication (wireless communication). It is an electric device that transmits and receives data over a cellular network of base stations known as a cell site using full duplex two-way radio. In Europe and other parts of the world, many mobile phone users use the GSM (Global System for Mobile communication) digital mobile network. The most popular of the three digital wireless telephony technologies-TDMA, GSM, and CDMA-GSM uses a variation of time division multiple access (TDMA) (CDMA). GSM converts data to an electronic form, compresses it, and sends it along with two other streams of user data, each in its own time slot, down a channel. It uses a variety of frequency bands. The mobile device itself, the base station subsystem (BSS), the network switching subsystem (NSS), and the operation and support subsystem are the four separate components that make up the GSM network and cooperate to operate as a whole (OSS). Hardware is used to connect the mobile device to the network. The network receives identification data about the mobile user from the subscriber identity module (SIM) card. In this book, concepts of mobile communications, GSM and its architecture, GSM radio network concepts and call processing in GSM are discussed. This is the first edition of the book.
