Book excerpt: This is Book 3, of four books, that tours the Grand Circle Adventure parks in southern Utah and northern Arizona. The town of Kanab serves this entire area providing all tourist services. The areas covered in this book are shown in the front cover and the Table of Contents. All books are available at: www.southutahparks.com This book is a combination of driving, hiking, mountain-biking and other tours. Where applicable, valuable specific history of that area is included from ancient Indian to modern pioneer evolution. There are suggestions of what to see and do for each tour. Your exact location is known by using a meticulous identification of MPs (mile posts along the road indicating mileage) located at each mile (1.6 km) on every improved road. Where those MPs are not available, we use actual miles from a designated reference point. Where applicable, Global Positioning data (GPS) is supplied to complement walking tours in remote areas. Using this collection of information, you will always know your exact location. Book NavigationBook organization starts with the Table of Contents. Under each major Trip there are many individual Tours. Within each Tour, there are other sections: 1.0 Information, 2-Visitor Center; 3-Services; 4-Lodging; 5-Camping, 6-Hiking; 7-Other Tours (Biking, Horse, Rafting, etc.) and 8-Driving Tours.> Vermilion Cliffs National Monument is an exceptionally unique and seldom visited natural landscape area. It is adjacent to the southern border of Escalante Grand Staircase. Buckskin Slot Canyon is the largest slot in the U.S. Coyote Buttes hosts the world famous The Wave formation. White Pockets is an area of geological chaos composed of brilliant colors from white to red hues dramatized during sunrise and sunset. > Grand Canyon National Park, North Rim, is preferred from the South Rim as it is not crowded. The western end of the park is Tuweep, that has the most dramatic view of the Colorado River carving its way to the Gulf of California in Mexico. This overlook is 3,000 feet (914 m) above the river where the furious Lava Falls are seen and heard. There is a trail to those falls.> Kaibab Forest is the westerly extension of the National Park's overlooks. Unlike National Park trails, Kaibab Forest has a multitude of uncrowded hikes down to the river. Ancient Indian rock art (petroglyphs and pictographs) are abundant. As a national forest, free camping is available everywhere. > Arizona Strip is the most isolated area within the continental U.S. almost void of human penetration. About 4,000 miles (6,436 km) of remote barren roads challenge exploration within an area that is slightly larger than the state of Massachusetts or one-half the size of Switzerland. Within that vast area there are two driving tours to Tuweep. The other tour is Lees Ferry Colorado River crossing. > Pink Sand Dunes State Park is a vast area of red tinted natural sand dunes. This area is popular for ATVs. There are many ancient Indian petroglyphs and petroglyphs dramatized by a South Fork Indian panel pictograph displaying its multitude of face images. > Best Friends Sanctuary is a private no-kill pet organization that rescues most all animals and provides an adoption center for those pets. Normally there are about 300 cats. Dog-town has almost an equal quantity of puppies and adult dogs waiting for a home. Many people volunteer their entire vacation to care for these orphaned animals. There is a small campground here - reservations required. > Wupatki National Monument and Sunset Crater -About 8,000 Indians farmed this area leaving behind almost 2.700+ ruins. The largest village was constructed from 1120 to 1210 A.D. It is located behind the Visitor Center. Sunset Crater volcano erupted in 1064 AD and intermittently until about 1250 A.D. The ash covered 800-square miles (2,071 sq. km) creating fertile farming land.

Book Indigenous Environmental Justice

Download or read book Indigenous Environmental Justice written by Karen Jarratt-Snider and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2020-05-05 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume clearly distinguishes Indigenous environmental justice (IEJ) from the broader idea of environmental justice (EJ) while offering detailed examples from recent history of environmental injustices that have occurred in Indian Country. With connections to traditional homelands being at the heart of Native identity, environmental justice is of heightened importance to Indigenous communities. Not only do irresponsible and exploitative environmental policies harm the physical and financial health of Indigenous communities, they also cause spiritual harm by destroying land held in a place of exceptional reverence for Indigenous peoples. With focused essays on important topics such as the uranium mining on Navajo and Hopi lands, the Dakota Access Pipeline dispute on the Standing Rock Indian Reservation, environmental cleanup efforts in Alaska, and many other pertinent examples, this volume offers a timely view of the environmental devastation that occurs in Indian Country. It also serves to emphasize the importance of self-determination and sovereignty in victories of Indigenous environmental justice. The book explores the ongoing effects of colonization and emphasizes Native American tribes as governments rather than ethnic minorities. Combining elements of legal issues, human rights issues, and sovereignty issues, Indigenous Environmental Justice creates a clear example of community resilience in the face of corporate greed and state indifference.
