Book A Visualization Study of Mixture Preparation Mechanisms for Port Fuel Injected Spark Ignition Engines

Download or read book A Visualization Study of Mixture Preparation Mechanisms for Port Fuel Injected Spark Ignition Engines written by Vincent Stanley Costanzo and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental study was carried out that examined qualitatively the mixture preparation process in port fuel injected spark ignition engines. The primary variables in this study were intake valve lift, intake valve timing, injector spray quality, and injection timing. A special visualization engine was used to enable high-speed video of the fuel-air mixture flowing through the intake valve, as well as the wetting of the intake valve and head in the combustion chamber. Additionally, video was taken from within the intake port using a borescope to examine liquid fuel distribution in the port. Finally, a simulation study was carried out in order to understand how the various combinations of intake valve lifts and timings affect the flow velocity through the valve gap to aid in the interpretation of the videos. The net result of the study was the construction of an "event diagram" for each experimental condition that identifies and explains the sequence of events and interactions affecting the liquid fuel. Six mechanisms that transport liquid fuel into the combustion chamber and five that affect liquid fuel within the combustion chamber were identified.

Book Mixture Formation in Spark Ignition Engines

Download or read book Mixture Formation in Spark Ignition Engines written by Hans Peter Lenz and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twentyfour years have gone by since the publication of K. Lohner and H. Muller's comprehen sive work "Gemischbildung und Verbrennung im Ottomotor" in 1967 [1.1]' Naturally, the field of mixture formation and combustion in the spark-ignition engine has wit nessed great technological advances and many new findings in the intervening years, so that the time seemed ripe for presenting a summary of recent research and developments. There fore, I gladly took up the suggestion of the editors of this series of books, Professor Dr. H. List and Professor Dr. A. Pischinger, to write a book summarizing the present state of the art. A center of activity of the Institute of Internal-Combustion Engines and Automotive Engineering at the Vienna Technical University, which I am heading, is the field of mixture formation -there fore, many new results that have been achieved in this area in collaboration with the respective industry have been included in this volume. The basic principles of combustion are discussed only to that extent which seemect necessary for an understanding of the effects of mixture formation. The focal point of this volume is the mixture formation in spark-ignition engines, covering both the theory and actual design of the mixture formation units and appropriate intake manifolds. Also, the related measurement technology is explained in this work.

Book Assessment of Fuel Economy Technologies for Light Duty Vehicles

Download or read book Assessment of Fuel Economy Technologies for Light Duty Vehicles written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2011-06-03 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Various combinations of commercially available technologies could greatly reduce fuel consumption in passenger cars, sport-utility vehicles, minivans, and other light-duty vehicles without compromising vehicle performance or safety. Assessment of Technologies for Improving Light Duty Vehicle Fuel Economy estimates the potential fuel savings and costs to consumers of available technology combinations for three types of engines: spark-ignition gasoline, compression-ignition diesel, and hybrid. According to its estimates, adopting the full combination of improved technologies in medium and large cars and pickup trucks with spark-ignition engines could reduce fuel consumption by 29 percent at an additional cost of $2,200 to the consumer. Replacing spark-ignition engines with diesel engines and components would yield fuel savings of about 37 percent at an added cost of approximately $5,900 per vehicle, and replacing spark-ignition engines with hybrid engines and components would reduce fuel consumption by 43 percent at an increase of $6,000 per vehicle. The book focuses on fuel consumption-the amount of fuel consumed in a given driving distance-because energy savings are directly related to the amount of fuel used. In contrast, fuel economy measures how far a vehicle will travel with a gallon of fuel. Because fuel consumption data indicate money saved on fuel purchases and reductions in carbon dioxide emissions, the book finds that vehicle stickers should provide consumers with fuel consumption data in addition to fuel economy information.

Book Emission Control and Fuel Economy

Download or read book Emission Control and Fuel Economy written by John H Johnson and published by SAE International. This book was released on 2005-06-27 with total page 700 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emission and fuel economy regulations and standards are compelling manufacturers to build ultra-low emission vehicles. As a result, engineers must develop spark-ignition engines with integrated emission control systems that use reformulated low-sulfur fuel. Emission Control and Fuel Economy for Port and Direct Injected SI Engines is a collection of SAE technical papers that covers the fundamentals of gasoline direct injection (DI) engine emissions and fuel economy, design variable effects on HC emissions, and advanced emission control technology and modeling approaches. All papers contained in this book were selected by an accomplished expert as the best in the field; reprinted in their entirety, they present a pathway to integrated emission control systems that meet 2004-2009 EPA standards for light-duty vehicles.

Book Reducing Cold Start Hydrocarbon Emissions from Port Fuel Injected Spark Ignition Engines with Improved Management of Hardware Controls

Download or read book Reducing Cold Start Hydrocarbon Emissions from Port Fuel Injected Spark Ignition Engines with Improved Management of Hardware Controls written by Kevin R. Lang and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (Cont.) By timing split injection such that the second injection event hits the overlap back flow, a small mixture preparation and emissions benefit was achieved. Earlier IVO results in a longer back flow period, however the impact on mixture preparation is small. The observed reduction in HC emissions resulted from a higher residual gas fraction due to early IVO, which yielded later combustion phasing, which in turn yielded increased post-flame oxidation. Under steady-state cold coolant conditions, operation of a 4-cylinder engine with three cylinders running rich and the fourth used to pump air into the exhaust manifold resulted in near total oxidation of CO and HC at sufficiently retarded spark timing. Exhaust gas temperatures and enthalpy flow rates were significantly higher than for the conventional engine configuration at fast idle. Using this strategy to perform real cold starts proved challenging without the additional hardware needed for sufficient control over air flow to the engine.
