Book excerpt: A dual, axially-in-line, side-dump, liquid-fueled ramjet combustor was designed and tested with varying fuel-air ratios, atomizer types, and air distributions between the two inlets. Particle size distributions produced by the atomizers were measured at the inlet duct plane. When operated in a contra- flow direction, all of the atomizers produced excellent atomization with a Sauter mean diameter less than 14 microns. The dual, in-line inlets provided improved flammability limits and combustion efficiencies at lean fuel-air ratios when compared to single side-dump performance. Direct injection of approximately 20% of the fuel flow into the dome region was found to provide improved lean flammability limits for the single side-dump, but was not required with the dual inlets. The fuel distribution in the inlet duct required for good flammability limits and combustion efficiency was opposite to that required to prevent pressure oscillations, indicating that a dump plane aero-grid will often be necessary. A dump angle of 45 deg resulted in lower than desired combustion efficiencies, apparently due to poor mixing with the air from the aft inlet.

Book excerpt: Hydrodynamic simulations were conducted of dual inlet side dump combustor configurations to obtain flow visualization and residence time data using the Water Tunnel test rig facility of the Ramjet Technology Branch AFWAL/PORT Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio. Tests were conducted for inlet duct angles of 30, 45, and 60 degrees for variations in the combustor dome plate height from 0.0 to 6.0 inches, for total combustor fluid flow rates of 200, 300 and 400 gallons per minute, for nozzle area to combustor area ratios of 0.20, 0.29 and 0.39, and for combustor lengths of 20.13, 39.0 and 53.25 inches. The inlet duct Reynolds Numbers for each total flow rate tested were 125,640 for 200 gallons per minute, 188,400 for 300 gallons per minute, and 251,300 for 400 gallons per minute. Also reported on are specialized research efforts concluded to support advanced combustor studies. Non-intrusive watertunnel flow-visualization techniques were utilized to qualitatively determine optimum flame-stabilization dome lengths and fuel-injection locations. The results were in good agreement with the results from previous studies. The optimum dome lengths which provided good fuel distribution and steady mixing all had lengths between 0.31 D and 1.4 D. Fuel injection in a narrow region on the upstream side of the inlet cross section was the only location capable of distributing fuel into the flame- holding region. Multiple injection locations in the inlet were required to distribute fuel uniformly into the main combustion region. The dual, axially-in- line side-dump configuration demonstrated the best potential for increasing performance across a wide range of operating conditions due to the ancillary combustion region between the inlets and the ability to control the size and strength of the region by varying air mass flow through the two inlet dumps.
