Book Perovskite Oxide for Solid Oxide Fuel Cells

Download or read book Perovskite Oxide for Solid Oxide Fuel Cells written by Tatsumi Ishihara and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-06-12 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fuel cell technology is quite promising for conversion of chemical energy of hydrocarbon fuels into electricity without forming air pollutants. There are several types of fuel cells: polymer electrolyte fuel cell (PEFC), phosphoric acid fuel cell (PAFC), molten carbonate fuel cell (MCFC), solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC), and alkaline fuel cell (AFC). Among these, SOFCs are the most efficient and have various advantages such as flexibility in fuel, high reliability, simple balance of plant (BOP), and a long history. Therefore, SOFC technology is attracting much attention as a power plant and is now close to marketing as a combined heat and power generation system. From the beginning of SOFC development, many perovskite oxides have been used for SOFC components; for example, LaMnO -based oxide for the cathode and 3 LaCrO for the interconnect are the most well known materials for SOFCs. The 3 current SOFCs operate at temperatures higher than 1073 K. However, lowering the operating temperature of SOFCs is an important goal for further SOFC development. Reliability, durability, and stability of the SOFCs could be greatly improved by decreasing their operating temperature. In addition, a lower operating temperature is also beneficial for shortening the startup time and decreasing energy loss from heat radiation. For this purpose, faster oxide ion conductors are required to replace the conventional Y O -stabilized ZrO 2 3 2 electrolyte. A new class of electrolytes such as LaGaO is considered to be 3 highly useful for intermediate-temperature SOFCs.

Book Nonstoichiometric Oxides

Download or read book Nonstoichiometric Oxides written by O.T. Soerensen and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nonstoichiometric Oxides discusses the thermodynamic and structural studies of nonstoichiometric oxides. This eight-chapter text also covers the defect-defect interactions in these compounds. The introductory chapters describe the thermodynamic properties of nonstoichiometric oxides in terms of defect complexes using the classical thermodynamic principles and from a statistical thermodynamics point of view. These chapters also include statistical thermodynamic models that indicate the ordered nonstoichiometric phase range in these oxides. The subsequent chapters examine the transport properties, such as diffusion and electrical conductivity. Diffusion theories and experimental diffusion coefficients for several systems, as well as the electrical properties of the highly defective ionic and mixed oxide conductor, are specifically tackled in these chapters. The concluding chapters present the pertinent results obtained in nonstoichiometric oxide structural studies using high-resolution electron microscopy and X-ray and neutron diffraction. Inorganic chemists and inorganic chemistry teachers and students will greatly appreciate this book.

Book Tailoring Electronic Properties in Semiconducting Perovskite Materials Through Octahedral Control

Download or read book Tailoring Electronic Properties in Semiconducting Perovskite Materials Through Octahedral Control written by Amber K. Choquette and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perovskite oxides, which take the chemical formula ABO3, are a very versatile and interesting materials family, exhibiting properties that include ferroelectricity, ferromagnetism, mixed ionic/electronic conductivity, metal-insulator behavior and multiferroicity. Key to these functionalities is the network of BO6 corner-connected octahedra, which are known to distort and rotate, directly altering electronic and ferroic properties. By controlling the BO6 octahedral distortions and rotations through cationic substitutions, the use of strain engineering, or through the formation of superlattice structures, the functional properties of perovskites can be tuned. Motivating the use of structure-driven design in oxide heterostructures is the prediction of hybrid improper ferroelectricity in A'BO3/ABO3 superlattices. Two key design rules to realizing hybrid improper ferroelectricity are the growth of high quality superlattice structures with odd periodicities of the A / A' layers, and the control of the octahedral rotation pattern. My work explores the rotational response in perovskite oxides to strain and interface effects in thin films of RFeO3 (R = La, Eu). I demonstrate a synchrotron x-ray diffraction technique to identify the rotation pattern that is present in the films. I then establish substrate imprinting as a key tool for controlling the rotation patterns in heterostructures, providing a means to realize the necessary structural variants of the predicted hybrid improper ferroelectricity in superlattices. In addition, by pairing measured diffraction data with a structure factor calculation, I demonstrate how one can extract both A-site and oxygen atomic positions in single crystal perovskite oxide films. Finally, I show results from (LaFeO3)n/(EuFeO3)n superlattices (n = 1-5), synthesized to test the motivating predictions of hybrid improper ferroelectricity in oxide superlattices.

Book Localized to Itinerant Electronic Transition in Perovskite Oxides

Download or read book Localized to Itinerant Electronic Transition in Perovskite Oxides written by John B. Goodenough and published by Springer. This book was released on 2003-09-04 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interest in the transition metal oxides with perovskite related structures goes back to the 1950s when the sodium tungsten bronzes NaxWO3 were shown to be metallic [1], the system Lal_xSr~MnO3 was found to contain a ferromagnetic conductive phase [2], and La0.sSr0.sCoO3 was reported to be a ferromagnetic metal, but with a peculiar magnetization of 1.5 #a/Co atom [3]. Stoichiometric oxide perovskites have the generic formula AMO3 in which the A site is at the center of a simple cubic array of M sites; the oxide ions form (180 ° 4)) M O M bridges to give an MO3 array of corner shared MO6/2 octahedra and the larger A cations have twelvefold oxygen coordination. Mismatch between the A O and M O equilibrium bond lengths introduces internal stresses. A compressive stress on the MO3 array is accommodated by a lowering of the M O M bond angle from 180 ° to (180 ° 4)); a tensile stress on the M O M bonds is accommodated by the formation of hexagonal polytypes [4].
