This handbook examines current trends and reforms in public policy and administration, such as financial regulation, risk management, public health, e-government and many others at the local, national and international levels. The two themes of the book are that public policy and administration have acquired an important global aspect, and that a critical role for government is the regulation of capital. The handbook is organized into three thematic sections – Contemporary Challenges, Policy and Administration Responses and Forging a Resilient Public Administration – to allow readers to quickly access knowledge and improve their understanding of topics. The opening chapter, introductions to sections and extensive glossary aid readers to most effectively learn from the book. Download or read book Collaborative Governance Regimes written by Kirk Emerson and published by Georgetown University Press. This book was released on 2015-10-02 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whether the goal is building a local park or developing disaster response models, collaborative governance is changing the way public agencies at the local, regional, and national levels are working with each other and with key partners in the nonprofit and private sectors. While the academic literature has spawned numerous case studies and context- or policy-specific models for collaboration, the growth of these innovative collaborative governance systems has outpaced the scholarship needed to define it. Collaborative Governance Regimes breaks new conceptual and practical ground by presenting an integrative framework for working across boundaries to solve shared problems, a typology for understanding variations among collaborative governance regimes, and an approach for assessing both process and productivity performance. This book draws on diverse literatures and uses rich case illustrations to inform scholars and practitioners about collaborative governance regimes and to provide guidance for designing, managing, and studying such endeavors in the future. Collaborative Governance Regimes will be of special interest to scholars and researchers in public administration, public policy, and political science who want a framework for theory building, yet the book is also accessible enough for students and practitioners.

Download or read book World Development Report 2019 written by World Bank and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2018-10-31 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Work is constantly reshaped by technological progress. New ways of production are adopted, markets expand, and societies evolve. But some changes provoke more attention than others, in part due to the vast uncertainty involved in making predictions about the future. The 2019 World Development Report will study how the nature of work is changing as a result of advances in technology today. Technological progress disrupts existing systems. A new social contract is needed to smooth the transition and guard against rising inequality. Significant investments in human capital throughout a person’s lifecycle are vital to this effort. If workers are to stay competitive against machines they need to train or retool existing skills. A social protection system that includes a minimum basic level of protection for workers and citizens can complement new forms of employment. Improved private sector policies to encourage startup activity and competition can help countries compete in the digital age. Governments also need to ensure that firms pay their fair share of taxes, in part to fund this new social contract. The 2019 World Development Report presents an analysis of these issues based upon the available evidence.

Download or read book New Public Management written by Tom Christensen and published by Ashgate Pub Limited. This book was released on 2001-01 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text examines the dynamics of comprehensive civil service reform in Norway, Sweden, New Zealand and Australia. Since 1985, new public management (NPM) has evolved into an administrative orthodoxy. This book challenges the globalization thesis, which maintains that NPM is spreading rapidly around the world and generating convergence between civil service systems. The text argues that administrative reforms are transformed by a complex mixture of environmental pressure, policy features, and historical and institutional contexts, which would imply divergence and organizational variance. This book looks at three forms of tranformation of NPM. The first looks at the reform process, ideas, and content. The second looks at the effects of NPM reforms on political-administrative control, organized interests, policy capacity, and governmental culture. The third focuses on the implications of NPM for reform theory and democratic ideas.

Download or read book Performing the Past written by Tamar Katriel and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-05 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A nostalgic interest in the past is a well-recognized feature of fast-changing, contemporary societies. It finds its expression in a variety of history-making practices of which the establishment of local heritage museums is a major manifestation in many parts of the world today. Katriel develops a communication-centered perspective on the study of heritage museums and -- by extension -- other tourist sites, highlighting the role of discourse in these institutionalized, yet vernacular contexts of cultural production, social legitimation, and identity formation. Descriptive and critical in orientation, this book combines a close analysis of museum discourse with an exploration of such larger issues as: * the socio-cultural role of museums as arenas for the production of collective memory, * the ideological and performative constraints that shape museum presentations, * the interfacing of verbal and visual codes of communication in the context of material displays, * the dialectical interplay of the local and the global in contemporary life, and * the interpenetration of the personal and the communal in vernacular processes of narrative production. Of interest to scholars in communication, linguistics, anthropology, history, museum studies, tourism, intercultural communication, middle eastern studies, or those with interests in narratives, material culture, and ethnography.
