Book Research and Theory on Workplace Aggression

Download or read book Research and Theory on Workplace Aggression written by Nathan A. Bowling and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2017-02-15 with total page 599 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Workplace aggression is a serious problem for workers and their employers. As such, an improved scientific understanding of workplace aggression has important implications. This volume, which includes chapters written by leading workplace aggression scholars, addresses three primary topics: the measurement, predictors and consequences of workplace aggression; the social context of workplace aggression; and the prevention of workplace aggression. Of note, the book encompasses the various labels used by researchers to refer to workplace aggression, such as 'abusive supervision', 'bullying', 'incivility' and 'interpersonal conflict'. This approach differs from those of previous books on the topic in that it does not focus on a particular type of workplace aggression, but covers an intentionally broad conceptualization of workplace aggression - specifically, it considers aggression from both the aggressors' and the targets' perspectives and includes behaviors enacted by several types of perpetrators, including supervisors, coworkers and customers.

Book Perceived Organizational Support

Download or read book Perceived Organizational Support written by Robert Eisenberger and published by American Psychological Association (APA). This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today's constantly changing work environment is fraught with job uncertainty, frequent mergers and acquisitions, and a general breakdown of trust between employer and employee. More than ever, it is critical for managers to proactively shift away from devaluing employees as marginal capital to empowering them as human capital. Perceived organizational support-employees' perception of how much an organization values their contribution and cares about their well-being-mutually benefits both employees and their organizations and is integral to sustainable employer–employee relationships. Using organizational support theory and evidence gathered from hundreds of studies, Eisenberger and Stinglhamber demonstrate how perceived organizational support affects employees' well-being, the positivity of their orientation toward the organization and work, and behavioral outcomes favorable to the organization. The authors illustrate these findings with employee experiences and strategic approaches of major organizations such as Southwest Airlines, Wal-Mart, Costco, and Google. Organizational psychologists, management consultants, managers, and graduate students will obtain a clear understanding of perceived organizational support and the practical knowledge needed to foster its development and positive outcomes.

Book Dignity and Inclusion at Work

Download or read book Dignity and Inclusion at Work written by Premilla D'Cruz and published by Springer. This book was released on 2021-01-05 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The agenda of respectful workplaces is no more urgent than in the context of workplace bullying, emotional abuse and harassment. This becomes even more significant in the face of mistreatment linked to social identity and national culture. The chapters constituting Section 1 speak to the spectrum of primary, secondary and tertiary prevention undertaken within and beyond workplaces to tackle workplace bullying, emotional abuse and harassment. As well as organizational-related mechanisms, therapy, collective action and legislation are described. Normative angles, the challenges of actual practice and the contours of effectiveness are pinpointed. The increasing recognition of the conflation between category-based harassment and workplace bullying and the burgeoning cross-cultural lens of the substantive area are captured through the chapters of Section 2. Identities revolving around gender, sexuality, disability, caste and ethnicity serve as markers for mistreatment, underpinning the need to explore the dynamics of these situations in terms of causes, manifestations and consequences. Variations in the unfolding of negative acts due to cultural influences have been found, emphasizing that though misbehaviour is universal, it has country-specific characteristics.

Book Violence and Abuse In and Around Organisations

Download or read book Violence and Abuse In and Around Organisations written by Ronald J. Burke and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-01-29 with total page 761 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This international collection examines violence and abuse in and around organisations. The collection documents the causes, specifically from the perspective of human relations and of the workplace conditions. It also highlights the specific risks associated with high-risk professions or working environments. The first section considers types of violence and abuse, their relative frequencies, potential individual and workplace antecedents, costs to individuals, family’s organisations and societies, the fact both are increasing in frequency with new types (e.g., terrorism) appearing, and why addressing these has become increasingly important for individuals and organisations. The second section considers violence in interpersonal relationships such as bullying, incivility, bias and harassment, and toxic leadership. The third section examines unsafe workplaces, accidents, injuries, and deaths. The fourth section considers exploitive work conditions and arrangements such as precarious employment, the exploitation of immigrants, and human slavery. The final section offers suggestions on ways to address violence and abuse in and around organisations. These include aggression preventative supervisor behaviours in health care, suicide prevention in the workplace, dealing with disgruntled employees and former employees, and workplace interventions that address stress reduction more broadly. As with other titles in the Psychological and Behavioural Aspects of Risk Series, this research-based collection is firmly grounded in the boundary between work and society and offers important insights into how social and cultural problems are manifest in the workplace and how poor and abusive workplace practice, in turn, spills out into wider life.
