We have lost count of the number of foreign invitations that have been extended to him as well as his numerous speeches to defend and to explain the need for a European area. Mario Telò knows better than anyone that European values still need to be defended, that European studies cover several aspects, not just the political integration process in Europe but also the analysis of the behaviour of actors, decision-makers and citizens. We know that the ‘EU acquis’ is often temporary and several times the work has to be redone, as the difficulties of functioning with twenty-eight member states, and soon to be twenty-seven member states, show. The European Union does not always respond to the democratic deficit, the political integration approach needs to show the usefulness and expected benefits of European cooperation essential to its existence in a very tense global context. The energy of Mario Telò, his creativity, his international engagement, his academic openness will always be essential to the ULB. A member of the Académie Royale de Belgique [Royal Academy of Belgium], in the Classe des Lettres et des Sciences morales et politiques [section of letters and moral and political sciences], Mario Telò will always find the opportunity to express his analyses and proposals to get through the currently very troubled time of Europe’s and the world’s evolution.

Its chief aim is to answer the fundamental questions: What is the best political system for Europe? Upon which principles ought it to be founded? Does it concur with the past and the present of the Europeans? In addition, it unveils important political truths that remained up to now unidentified, yet their philosophical and theological sources were known for centuries. A new concept and an age-old thinking method brought forth this universal political theory. 'Culture family' means either an association of distinct cultures sharing common roots, or the transnational society of their human carriers. Arguably, a sound approach to the political future of multicultural societies is impossible in the absence of this construct. This book explains the genesis of the European culture family in accordance with Hegel's dialectical method, and identifies love as the principle and the end guiding life within it. Moreover, it includes a draft of the Charter of the Rights of the European Culture Family, so as to ensure that all concerned parties acknowledge them. The other key idea underpinning The European Union according to Jesus Christ consists of a cross-domain, all embracing analogy. Just as the person and the work of Jesus Christ are essential to the redemption of mankind, so the entity and the duty of the state are crucial to the recovery of culturally and economically interconnected societies. The Definition of Faith of the Chalcedon Council and its political translation illustrate this similarity. In order to develop it thoroughly, 45 articles of the Summa Theologiae were translated into an equal number of political theses. Aquinas wrote this masterpiece in the 13th century, that is, during Europe's childhood. It is a comprehensive exposition of Christian theology and an excellent summary of the philosophy of Aristotle, one of the greatest thinkers ever. Thus the worth of the propositions incarnating the European version of the state according to Jesus Christ is assured.

Brexit could mean not only the reversal of its steady enlargement—from 6 to 28 member states—but also the beginning of an inexorable decline leading to its disintegration. However, few today seem to recollect that it was precisely the British who were the first to promulgate the political culture which inspired the European Union’s construction—democracy and federalism—and the first who tried to realise, in June 1940, a European federation on the basis of an Anglo-French union. This volume traces the fundamental stages of the European unification process, placing it in relation to the wider process of world economic and political integration. In particular, it analyses the historical significance of the European Revolution, which is identified in the overcoming of the nation state—namely the modern political formula which institutionalised the political division of mankind—and the birth of the first truly international state. The universal historical significance of the European Revolution lies in its exportability—as for the other great European revolutions—and, therefore, its potential as progressively extensible to all the states of the planet. Europe was indeed the first region of the world where the barriers between national states fell, and a post-national political identity emerged, complementary to national political identities. It is, in fact, in the context of the European Union that democracy beyond the borders of the nation state has first been realized, constituting a guiding principle for global governance.
