Book excerpt: Some Mistakes of Moses, was written by American writer, orator, and proponent of Freethought and agnosticism Robert Green Ingersoll, and originally published in 1897.The work is a popular lecture which asks questions of the veracity of the Pentateuch, and questions the mysteries of the scripture from Creation through to the Egyptian Captivity. Ingersoll seriously believed that the alleged divine origins of the Bible were not sufficient reason for a suspension of critical judgement. His invective against Old Testament is a call for reason, as he feared that when the Bible was read as truth rather than as a collection of fables, mankind would destroy itself in its attempt to follow the teachings of Moses to the letter. Ingersoll strongly believed that the most important belief one can have is belief in man. "Theology is a superstition - Humanity is a religion".

It is this singularity, no doubt, rather than intrinsic worth, which gives any significance that may attach to his words. That the Bible is in the least endangered is out of the question. It is too late now for that. The words herein compiled from good and able men, who have made the great Book, in its early language, import and history, a careful study for long years, will show how futile are Mr. Ingersoll's efforts in parading what he calls the "Mistakes of Moses," etc. Indeed, it would seem that, possibly Mr. I. is guilty of a mistaken identity, for lie is severely accused of false assertions and misrepresentations concerning the real Moses. This reminds 115 of a " mistake" which was made on a certain occasion by the celebrated Archbishop of Dublin, the gifted author of the work so widely known, entitled "The Study of Words." He was not in robust health at the time, and for many years had been apprehensive of paralysis. At a dinner in Dublin, given by the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, his grace sat on the right of his hostess, the Duchess of Abercorn.
