Book Potamology Investigation

Download or read book Potamology Investigation written by Water and Environment Consultants and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past 10 years, the Missouri River has experienced a large downward shift in its stage discharge relationship at the Sioux City, Iowa, gaging station. The stage for a given discharge, in the range of 10,000 to 40,000 cfs, has decreased 5-8 feet in this time. A study of related data shows that the combined interaction of geologic, hydrologic, geometric, and hydraulic factors influenced this change. The major changes which combined to cause a general degradation in the river reach near Sioux City include a reduction in suspended sediment load, a shortening of the river channel in the area, construction of river training works, and a recent (7 year) increase in the mean yearly flows as well as increased peak flows. The resulting degradation and increase in total channel area below the high bank elevation have lowered the stage for a given discharge at Sioux City. This study illustrates the changes which have occurred in the river since 1950.

Book Missouri River Temperature Effects in the Transition from Dunes to Plane Bed

Download or read book Missouri River Temperature Effects in the Transition from Dunes to Plane Bed written by CORPS OF ENGINEERS OMAHA NEBR. and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seasonal water-temperature changes influence stage-discharge and depth-discharge relations in rivers and in conveyance channels and navigation channels where water discharge is constant. The major influence is related to changes in bed configuration which accompanies water temperature changes. Stability analysis provides a theoretical basis for predicting bed-configuration changes, and using the theoretical relations with one empirical coefficient defined from field data, graphical relations are developed to use as design curves for estimating the velocity and flow depth, given the design unit water discharge, bed material size distribution, water temperature, and channel slope. The design curves are for channels with bed materials from 0.1 to 0.3 mm median diameters, water temperatures for 0 to 30 deg C, and slopes from 0.00005 to 0.0012.

Book Taming the Yellow River Silt and Floods

Download or read book Taming the Yellow River Silt and Floods written by L.M. Brush and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 684 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About four years ago Dr. Gilbert White visited China and sowed the seeds of this project through conversations with Drs. Huang and Gong of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Mr. Long of the Yellow River Conservancy Commission. After some additional rounds of communications by letter, the plan for a workshop evolved and Drs. Wolman and Brush visited with Dr. Sabadell of the Nat_ional Science Foundation to begin the initial planning. In March 1987 Dr. Brush visited China and the details were worked out for the October 1987 workshop. At the outset it was recognized that the 10 American scientists and engineers ltad very Ii ttle knowledge of the Yellow River and none had ever seen it. Therefore, it became important that field trips be scheduled before the workshop to better set the stage for fruitful discussions. It was also acknowledged that the American participants could not present papers about the Yellow River per se so their offerings reflected their general knowledge of rivers using other rivers as examples. On the other hand the Chinese participants were all well into the difficult problems of harnessing the Yellow River and made their presentations accordingly. Despite these differences the subject matter was the unifying thread and cross communication was excellent.
