Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Missionary History of the Pacific Northwest: Containing the Wonderful Story of Jason Lee; With Sketches of Many of His Co-Laborers, All Illustrating Life on the Plains and in the Mountains in Pioneer Days In presenting this "Missionary History of the Pacific Northwest" to the reading public the writer has but a few introductory observations to make. This work is not the result of a hasty impulse, nor was it called forth by any desire to serve personal, sectional, or sectarian aims. For forty-six years the author has been personally connected with the work of the Church in the Pacific Northwest, and more or less intimately associated with nearly every prominent actor in the history which he has endeavored faithfully to record. Through that association, in his early life, the purpose which he is now endeavoring to fulfill in this volume was formed in his mind, and he has studied characters and events in the light of that purpose from the beginning. His own work as a minister has led him along every watercourse, over every trail, through every mountain fastness, into every desert solitude over which the great pioneers whose going antedated his own coming by but a few years ever passed or entered. Book Experiences in a Promised Land

Download or read book Experiences in a Promised Land written by G. Thomas Edwards and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Pacific Northwest, like many other regions of the United States, has been touted as the Promised Land. As early as the 1830s, "Oregon fever" brought missionaries, promoters, speculators, politicians, and settlers to the nation’s far West. Spared the ravages of the Civil War and the scars of rapid northern industrialization, the region continued to offer Golden Opportunity. Its promise encompassed the bounties of sea and land, a mild and healthful climate, and an unusually homogeneous population. Practically since the turn of the century, the Northwest has been a region of paradoxes. Women, who in Washington had acquired suffrage and lost it in the 1880s, regained it and later elected a woman mayor of Seattle. Exploitation of workers, despite, or perhaps because of, abundance has been extreme-- and has engendered some of America’s most radical labor movements. Both racial backlash and enlightened reforms characterize the region. Until now, no single-volume history has taken up the modern issues of women, minorities, radicalism and environment. The editors of Experiences in the Promised Land, G. Thomas Edwards and Carlos Schwantes, themselves teachers and writers of Northwest history, have carefully compiled a selection of essays that treats the full scope of the region’s history, with a special emphasis on 20th century topics. They have gathered together the best of recent scholarship: the work of regional authorities as well as contributions by some of the most promising of the new generation of scholars. A variety of writing styles and approaches, subjects ranging from individual biographies to studies of broad policies and movements, a chronological organization enhanced by concise, insightful chapter commentaries, and an extensive bibliography make this volume indispensable for teachers, students, and the general reader of Northwest history.

This book was released on 2017-06-28 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Marcus Whitman, the Pathfinder of the Pacific Northwest and Martyred Missionary of Oregon His unpretentious pamphlet on a great subject, is a lecture I have delivered many times in the State of Washington when presenting the claims of Whitman College. This will account for the colloquial style and lack of rhetorical finish. The effort has been to present the salient points as brief and comprehensive as possible. In the pre paration of it I have become intensely interested in the romantic history of the Pacific Northwest. And have been especially impressed with the important part which the early missionaries played in the wonderful drama. I am thoroughly convinced that the subject deserves careful and elaborate treatment by a competent mind, and it will doubtless have it. God willing. By Rev. Dr. Myron Eells. The Rev. J. E. Roy, D. D. Of Chicago, and others, have suggested that such a pamphlet as this. Widely distributed, would aid in promot ing the interests of Whitman College and if that end is accomplished the author will be abundantly rewarded. Among many works con sulted, special acknowledgment of indebtedness is due the following Bancroft's History of Northwest Coast, Oregon and Washington, Gray's History of Oregon, Barrow's' Oregon, The Struggle for Pos session, Gilbert's History of Walla Walla County, and Life of Marcus Whitman, in The Pacific, by Rev.
