Book English Teaching as Christian Mission

Download or read book English Teaching as Christian Mission written by Donald Snow and published by Herald Press. This book was released on 2001-04-27 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent decades have seen an ever-increasing number of Western Christians going abroad as English teachers. Many of these teachers are going to countries that are not very receptive to other forms of Western Christian mission. Some Western Christians view English teaching primarily as a means to gain access to "closed" countries for the purpose of evangelistic outreach. Other Western Christians see it mainly as a form of social service. Snow’s well-thought-out details of how to bear witness, engage in ministry, serve the poor, contribute to peace, and build bridges of understanding between churches clearly show the special role of Christian mission that Christian English teachers can have.

Book excerpt: Teaching English as a missionary has become a significantly larger field in the recent years. These missionaries are confronted with a unique set of circumstances in which they perform their service. As English teachers, these missionaries are faced with the dilemma of teaching as best they can while at the same time living as followers of Christ in cultures that may be opposed to Christ as well as to the Western culture. This thesis unwraps the issues involved and discusses possible solutions to the problems that present themselves for missionary English teachers.

Book Christian and Critical English Language Educators in Dialogue

Download or read book Christian and Critical English Language Educators in Dialogue written by Mary Shepard Wong and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-06-25 with total page 602 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The legacy of English teaching and Christian missionaries is a flashpoint within the field of English language teaching. This critical examination of the place of Christianity in the field is unique in presenting the voices of TESOL professionals from a wide range of religious and spiritual perspectives. About half identify themselves as "Christian" while the others identify themselves as Buddhist, atheist, spiritualist, and variations of these and other faiths. What is common for all the authors is their belief that values have an important place in the classroom. What they disagree on is whether and how spiritual values should find expression in learning and teaching. This volume dramatizes how scholars in the profession wrestle with ideological, pedagogical, and spiritual dilemmas as they seek to understand the place of faith in education. To sustain this conversation, the book is structured dialogically. Each section includes a set of position chapters in which authors explain their views of faith/pedagogy integration, a set of chapters by authors responding to these positions while articulating their own views on the subject, and discussion questions to engage readers in comparing the positions of all the authors, reflecting on their own experiences and values, and advancing the dialogue in fresh and personal directions.

Book The Missionary Fellowship of William Carey

Download or read book The Missionary Fellowship of William Carey written by Michael A G Haykin and published by . This book was released on 2024-01-23 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The eighteenth century was a time of remarkable missionary activity. As the British Empire expanded around the world, Christian missionaries followed in the wake of merchants and explorers to bring the gospel to places where Christ had never before been named. At the heart of this global missionary movement was William Carey. From humble beginnings in England, Carey journeyed halfway around the world to preach the gospel on the Indian subcontinent. Known as the founder of modern missions, Carey is often portrayed as a solitary trailblazer and pioneer. But that isn't the full story. In The Missionary Fellowship of William Carey, Dr. Michael Haykin explores Carey's life and introduces us to the band of brothers who labored with him to spread the gospel on a global scale. As we follow their stories, we discover how God uses Christian friendship to advance His kingdom, and we're encouraged to nurture Christ-honoring friendships in our own lives. This book is part of the Long Line of Godly Men Profile series, edited by Dr. Steven Lawson.

Book State Building and Multilingual Education in Africa

Download or read book State Building and Multilingual Education in Africa written by Ericka A. Albaugh and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014-04-24 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do governments in Africa make decisions about language? What does language have to do with state-building, and what impact might it have on democracy? This manuscript provides a longue durée explanation for policies toward language in Africa, taking the reader through colonial, independence, and contemporary periods. It explains the growing trend toward the use of multiple languages in education as a result of new opportunities and incentives. The opportunities incorporate ideational relationships with former colonizers as well as the work of language NGOs on the ground. The incentives relate to the current requirements of democratic institutions, and the strategies leaders devise to win elections within these constraints. By contrasting the environment faced by African leaders with that faced by European state-builders, it explains the weakness of education and limited spread of standard languages on the continent. The work combines constructivist understanding about changing preferences with realist insights about the strategies leaders employ to maintain power.
