Book Skates Made of Bone

Download or read book Skates Made of Bone written by B.A. Thurber and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2020-02-28 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ice skates made from animal bones were used in Europe for millennia before metal-bladed skates were invented. Archaeological sites have yielded thousands of examples, some of them dating to the Bronze Age. They are often mentioned in popular books on the Vikings and sometimes appear in children's literature. Even after metal skates became the norm, people in rural areas continued to use bone skates into the early 1970s. Today, bone skates help scientists and re-enactors understand migrations and interactions among ancient peoples. This book explains how to make and use them and chronicles their history, from their likely invention in the Eurasian steppes to their disappearance in the modern era.

Book Biology of Skates

    Book Details:
  • Author : David A. Ebert
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2008-12-25
  • ISBN : 1402097034
  • Pages : 242 pages

Download or read book Biology of Skates written by David A. Ebert and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-12-25 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Skates have become a concern in recent years due to the preponderance of these elasmobranchs that are caught as bycatch or as a directed fishery. This has raised concern because skates have life history characteristics that may make them vulnerable to over-exploitation. It was due to this concern that prompted Drs. David Ebert and James Sulikowski to organize an international symposium on the “Biology of Skates”. The aims and goals of the symposium were to bring together an international group of researchers to meet, discuss, perhaps develop collaborations, and present their most recent findings. The symposium was held over two days, on 13-14 July, 2006, in conjunction with the 22nd annual meeting of the American Elasmobranch Society in New Orleans, LA. A total of 31 authors from four countries contributed 16 papers that appear in this volume. The papers are broadly arranged into four separate categories: systematics and biogeography, diet and feeding ecology, reproductive biology, and age and growth. This is the first dedicated book on the biology of skates. We hope that readers will find this volume of interest and that it helps encourage and stimulate future research into these fascinating fishes.
