Book Miscreants Misfits and Missionaries

Download or read book Miscreants Misfits and Missionaries written by Martin Ell and published by . This book was released on 2011-12 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It could be a very bumpy ride for expatriates, arriving in Australian administered New Guinea in the 1950's. Here the unexpected was the norm and the norm was impossible to define. For the unwary, one mistake could be all that it took for this unforgiving country to kill and many expatriates died with their boots on. Only the fatalist felt comfortable! In the war decimated township of Lae, unexploded bombs, grenades and shells still lay strewn throughout the jungle. Its shores were guarded by sharks, crocodile and sea urchins, all with killer instincts and tropical diseases abounded. Headhunting cannibals still lived in a stone age culture and roamed around in the "no go" zone. For naive Swedish missionaries Jonas and Ingrid, unforgiving New Guinea turned their lives upside down, as it did for the bigoted, self righteous Brendan and the hard bitten, agnostic Jack. Post war New Guinea was a great leveller and for the miscreants, misfits and missionaries, who inhabited this tropical island they discovered that it could change the normal into the bizarre . And often did!

Scarred by the loss of an older brother he idolized, estranged from a father he barely knows, and deeply troubled by the failing health of a mother he adores, young Matthew Kerney is suddenly and irrevocably forced to set aside his childhood and take on responsibilities far beyond his years. Part memoir and part cultural critique, Darkly explores American culture’s inevitable gothicity in the traces left from chattel slavery. The persistence of white supremacy and the ubiquity of Black death feeds a national culture of terror and a perpetual undercurrent of mourning. If the gothic narrative is metabolized fear, if the goth aesthetic is

Book The Shame of It

Download or read book The Shame of It written by Gubrium, Erika K. and published by Policy Press. This book was released on 2013-12-11 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The shame experienced by people living in poverty has long been recognised. Nobel laureate and economist, Amartya Sen, has described shame as the irreducible core of poverty. However, little attention has been paid to the implications of this connection in the making and implementation of anti-poverty policies. This important volume rectifies this critical omission and demonstrates the need to take account of the psychological consequences of poverty for policy to be effective. Drawing on pioneering empirical research in countries as diverse as Britain, Uganda, Norway, Pakistan, India, South Korea and China, it outlines core principles that can aid policy makers in policy development. In so doing, it provides the foundation for a shift in policy learning on a global scale and bridges the traditional distinctions between North and South, and high-, middle- and low-income countries. This will help students, academics and policy makers better understand the reasons for the varying effectiveness of anti-poverty policies.

Book Charlie the Great White Horse

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book in the series of "Charlie the Great White Horse" "Charlie the Great White Horse and the Story of the Magic Jingle Bells," is a children's/ adult Christmas novella that evokes: the adventure, fantasy and magical happy-endings, of a simpler time in America. This story is set in the early 1900's, in the mythical town of Centerville, Indiana. Louis Parks is a: ten year old red haired, freckle faced boy, who is a little small for his age, and found to be in constant trouble with his mom, because he never finishes his daily-chores; due to his endless daydreaming. Louis envisions himself the hero in his fantasies; but his real life is quite different. Louis has found a special friendship with Charlie-a very friendly, but somewhat strange barnyard-horse; of Louis' neighbor, Mr. Beamer. Charlie has his own secrets though. Although he appears to be: an old working cart-horse, soon to be replaced by the new "horseless-buggy" technology, he is in fact; the last of a very special breed of horse. He is an "Arion," from the "ancient times," who can achieve immortality by performing magical acts of daring and courage-when called upon. As the story unfolds in the months before Christmas, Charlie, Louis and Chug Martin are thrown into circumstances wrought: with danger, daring, and intrigue. They must: foil the plot of a trio of horse-thieves from Saint Louis, who arrive in Centerville-during the annual county fair-to steal Jupiter, the great racehorse, who has come to run in Centerville's famous "Gazette Stakes." Charlie, Louis and Chug perform: heroic deeds, ultimately acts of great courage, bravery and determination; in ridding the town of the three Missouri Rats- Black Jack Tilly, Cool Joe Biggs and Rags Martin. This wonderful Christmas fable is about: tried-and-true-values and good-morals that all children; should take to heart. This is a: coming-of-age story that should be relevant for children of all ages. The pre-quell to this book is: The Journey to Northumberland and the Rise of the Undertoads.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Roger Joslin is the vicar of All Saints Episcopal Church in Bentonville, AR, a mission of the Episcopal Diocese of Arkansas. He arrived in town in town as a newly ordained deacon in 2006. All Saints now has an ASA of 233, is the fifth largest congregation in the Diocese of Arkansas, and is well on its way to parish status. It is obviously doing well, but its location in Bentonville, the home of Walmart, adds another layer to the narrative. It is a rich narrative, and one of the best books on congregational development I've read in a long time. He makes a powerful case for the role of a progressive Episcopal church in this location and for the appeal of preaching and practicing a gospel of inclusion in a way that reaches out to whatever groups or individuals that have been marginalized by churches.

Book The Call the Fall of Humankind

Download or read book The Call the Fall of Humankind written by Ligondé and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2009 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Call is the archetype of 'the Iliad by Homer'; except, here, Ligonde dares go where no other mind has gone before. As has said Stephen Hawking in his book 'a brief history of time' The Church dislikes the idea of anyone going before or beyond the 'big bang' creation especially astrophysicists. Since, humans were limping before, then, Ligonde trek with them, back and forth in space/time, left them to proceed into 'the Quantum slipstream' beyond the Heavens near 'The Continuum' in this journey to see God! Unlike 'The Iliad' and 'The Inferno', 'The Call by Ligonde' is not fixated in one specific space/time or location on this blue, beautiful, bountiful planet Earth we dwell on; Instead, 'The Call' made them, both: "space" and "time", its playground; in them, it goes, 'back and forth', around! Unlike 'the Iliad and the Inferno', 'The Call' is overarching, overbearing in the Multiverses's escathological fate to awaken humankind about our destitute state by these entities who supposed to care for us, ad inceptio! Two apathetic posterities, two sides stand erect, posture for: Hegemony, world domination; whereas, one is orderly, conciliatory, revelatory and with respect; while the other is chaotic, deceitful, full of concealment and with disrespect, as if everything is fined. When, in the contrary, by the latter, we are being hijacked, taken hostages for more over (6,000) six thousands years of foolished history of disobedience and futile rebellion! Finally, after centuries of literary and religious dominance in the Western civilisation, both: 'The Iliad by Homer' and 'The Inferno by Dante' are pushed off the book-shelves awe-strikingly in 'The Call by Ligonde' for Humankind to get ready for 'the Messianic Era'. Open 'The Call', this edda in the eddy, with glee. You'll bite more than you could shew! Ligonde ID # Book ID #
