Book A Culture of Corruption

Download or read book A Culture of Corruption written by Daniel Jordan Smith and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2010-12-16 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: E-mails proposing an "urgent business relationship" help make fraud Nigeria's largest source of foreign revenue after oil. But scams are also a central part of Nigeria's domestic cultural landscape. Corruption is so widespread in Nigeria that its citizens call it simply "the Nigerian factor." Willing or unwilling participants in corruption at every turn, Nigerians are deeply ambivalent about it--resigning themselves to it, justifying it, or complaining about it. They are painfully aware of the damage corruption does to their country and see themselves as their own worst enemies, but they have been unable to stop it. A Culture of Corruption is a profound and sympathetic attempt to understand the dilemmas average Nigerians face every day as they try to get ahead--or just survive--in a society riddled with corruption. Drawing on firsthand experience, Daniel Jordan Smith paints a vivid portrait of Nigerian corruption--of nationwide fuel shortages in Africa's oil-producing giant, Internet cafés where the young launch their e-mail scams, checkpoints where drivers must bribe police, bogus organizations that siphon development aid, and houses painted with the fraud-preventive words "not for sale." This is a country where "419"--the number of an antifraud statute--has become an inescapable part of the culture, and so universal as a metaphor for deception that even a betrayed lover can say, "He played me 419." It is impossible to comprehend Nigeria today--from vigilantism and resurgent ethnic nationalism to rising Pentecostalism and accusations of witchcraft and cannibalism--without understanding the role played by corruption and popular reactions to it. Book Saint Giuseppe Moscati

Download or read book Saint Giuseppe Moscati written by Antonio Tripodoro and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2015-08-18 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the compelling and ; inspirational true story of a twentieth-century doctor ; and saint. Giuseppe Moscati, born of an aristocratic family in Naples, Italy, ; devoted his medical career to serving the poor. He was also a medical school ; professor and a pioneer in the field of biochemistry, whose research led to the ; discovery of insulin as a cure for diabetes. Moscati regarded his medical ; practice as an apostolate, a ministry to his suffering fellowmen. Before examining ; a patient or engaging in research he would place himself in the presence of God. ; Moscati treated poor patients free of charge, and he would often send them home ; with an envelope containing a prescription and a fifty-lire note. He could have ; pursued a brilliant academic career, taken a professorial chair, and devoted more ; time to research, but he continued to serve his beloved patients and to train ; dedicated interns. By the witness of his example, he taught his many ; medical students to practice their profession in a spirit of service, saying that ; "suffering should be treated not as just pain of the body, but as the cry of a soul, ; to whom another brother, the doctor, runs with the ardent love of charity. . . [The ; sick] are the faces of Jesus Christ, and the Gospel precept urges us to love them ; as ourselves."

Book A Tidy Faith

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jonathan F. Bayes
  • Publisher : Wipf and Stock Publishers
  • Release : 2024-09-13
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 558 pages

Download or read book A Tidy Faith written by Jonathan F. Bayes and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2024-09-13 with total page 558 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Tidy Faith is distinctive as a work of systematic theology in that it comes out of a Reformed Baptist stable: this is especially relevant for the sections on the church, worship, and the sacraments. Bayes seeks to lay the biblical foundation for each doctrinal subject, using an exegetical approach rather than merely citing prooftexts. For each doctrine, he also outlines the teaching of the early Christian creeds and the confessions of faith dating from the Reformation period, as well as referring to a small selection of modern statements of faith from different countries. Debates and interpretations of the various doctrines from different points in church history are summarized, and at the end of the exposition of every doctrinal theme, there is a section that emphasizes its practical application. This ensures that the book is not merely abstract and academic but has real down-to-earth value for Christian life and ministry.

Book Nationality Medicine

Download or read book Nationality Medicine written by Carlo Canepa and published by Austin Macauley Publishers. This book was released on 2022-05-31 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Medicine transcends all barriers; it knows no frontiers, it respects all credos and, most importantly, it treats all human beings as equals. Despite the tremendous socio-economic inequalities that I encountered and experienced in each one of the four countries where I’ve lived and practised medicine (Peru, United States, Spain and the UK), I’ve always been proud to find that the Hippocratic Oath is unwavering and equally applied to all citizens. My identity never came from having a certain nationality, speaking a specific language or even from my family genealogy. It came (and still does) from the set of values that the medical profession professes and that I, as a doctor, hold close to my heart. These values are the building blocks of society; without them, everything else crumbles. My “nationality” is medicine and my allegiance is to the human race. The lives and the clinical cases in this book are all real and they tell the story of how the Hippocratic Oath prevails even in the most challenging conditions. They remind us that no matter how much adversity lies before us (poverty, socio-economic instability, lack of resources, etc.), with sufficient effort, creativity and perseverance, there is always light at the end of the tunnel. After all, altruism – the bedrock of medicine – is free of charge, independent of location and always available for anyone who’s willing to use it.' Dr Carlo Canepa
