Book A Stem Cell Transplant MS Recovery Story

Download or read book A Stem Cell Transplant MS Recovery Story written by Sandi Selvi and published by . This book was released on 2010-03-01 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After being diagnosed with MS in 1995, Sandi Selvi began to decline rapidly and quickly became frustrated with conventional medical options. The drugs had nasty side effects, and in her case, the drugs didn't work. So, in March of 2000 Sandi joined forces with the brilliant doctors at Scripp's in San Diego, to, as they so eloquently put it, "Kill her immune system and build a new one" with an autologous stem cell transplant. Theoretically her new immune system could stop the MS. During the two month medical procedure Sandi came pretty close to death, but a $10.99 box of used comedy tapes helped her through recovery, and changed her life. Laughter is indeed the best medicine -- Sandi now shares her medicine, and her medical miracle, through stand-up comedy. REVIEWS "Sandi makes the toughest journey seem refreshingly funny. Every doctor, comedian and patient should read this great book." Neil Leiberman, The Comedy Coach(R) "Love the raw honesty and humor. MS babe who got a stem cell transplant -- that alone is a miracle." Christy Evans Jordan, has MS "I dog-earred over 20 pages that made me laugh out loud or burst in tears. I was awed by your journey, uplifted by your triumphs and overwhelmed by the simple message of family forever." Melissa Berger "Spell-binding -- rings true on every level. Inspiring and empowering for anyone facing challenges they think are so insurmountable that they cannot be overcome." Lynn Ruth Miller, author of Starving Hearts "I'm so glad Sandi refuses to do stand-up in a wheelchair...because we don't have a ramp. (For giggles.) Sandi incorporates some great laughs into her MS story, proving that she's not only a funny comedian but a strong woman as well." Heather Barbieri, owner of Rooster T. Feathers "Wonderful, amazing, heartbreaking, inspiring." Britta Wilder, writer and painter "Inspiration for anyone diagnosed with a serious disease. It shows that IT IS possible to not only beat the odds, but to pursue your passion at the same time." John DeKoven, Bunjo's Comedy Club "Really good read. Thanks for the insightful look into your life. You're a brave woman." Rich Stimbra, Asst. Dir. SFCC

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A life-changing treatment is conquering auto-immune disorders—why doesn’t anyone know about it? Thirty-five years ago, Dr. Richard Burt began a journey to treat chronic autoimmune diseases as they’d never been treated before. Using a treatment originally developed for leukemia but modified to be more gentle—a one-time combination of immune targeting drugs followed by a transplant of the patient’s blood stem cells—he has documented the successful and often dramatic reversal of multiple sclerosis, systemic sclerosis (scleroderma), chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (CIPD), neuromyelitis optica, and Crohn’s disease. After decades of study and randomized trials, his approach, which has been duplicated in other parts of the world, is finally being recognized as an effective means of reversing these “incurable” diseases. Some of his patients have been symptom-free for more than twenty years, and in this book Dr. Burt tells their stories alongside his own journey of developing and refining the treatment, known as hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) for autoimmune disorders. “These patients are the heroes,” Dr. Burt has said. “Their bodies and spirits faced unrelenting disease, and yet they fight valiantly against the suffering and obstacles.” What is HSCT? How does it work? What are the risks? Why aren’t more doctors talking about it? And why is it still out of reach for so many patients who could benefit from it? Dr. Burt answers these questions and many more. Written for the layperson, Everyday Miracles grants patients with autoimmune diseases and the people who love them insights into the revolutionary approach that could convert their life sentence into a one-time reversible illness.

She rode a motorcycle in high school, she worked in a cannery in Alaska at 20, and then backpacked solo through Europe. When she finally "settled down," she married Josh and pursued a career in sales. She lived a picture-perfect life--then Multiple Sclerosis caught up with her. After two years of rapid decline, Rachel found herself lying on the floor, writhing in agony, hoping to die. In Enduring the Cure, Rachel Carter shares how she overcame her struggle with the debilitating disease. It's a story of pain, decline, an experimental treatment, and healing. Book excerpt: The testimonies that you will read on the following pages are personal stories of courage, hope, faith and strength in the face of adversity. Some will make you cry, some will make you laugh and some will simply bring home the fact that God is. A Book of Triumphs and Impossibilities There is definitely a higher power up there in the heavens. My co-author Andreka Eberhart and I know this first hand because I was brought back from not being able to see at all, to being able to see; not being able to walk at all, to walking with confidence to being on the brink of certain death to doing things I once did before and sometimes better than before and Andreka's bout with MS had her brain ravished, where doctors gave her little chance of a complete recovery. We contribute all of our health and wealth and blessings to God Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior. What is a testimony? The dictionary defines a testimony as a statement under oath, proof or evidence of something. My definition of a testimony is simply a lesson: a lesson in life, in truth and the knowledge of God and His promises. It is my hope that your faith will be strengthened and you will have greater hope, peace and joy by reading these testimonies and that you will discover beyond a shadow of a doubt that with God, all things are possible!

Book The Whole Gospel for the Whole World

Download or read book The Whole Gospel for the Whole World written by Franklin Pyles and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2016-10-03 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like most Protestant denominations, the Christian and Missionary Alliance (C&MA) was founded upon ideas that shaped its vision and ethos throughout its history. Also like most denominations, over time the influence of these ideas on the movement tends to diminish. Denominations, like any organization, have to consistently revisit their original vision in order to remain vitally sustained by those things that gave it a reason for existing in the first place. This book addresses six key ideas that have shaped the Christian and Missionary Alliance throughout its history: Jesus as our savior, sanctifier, healer, and coming king, which are known as the "fourfold gospel," as well as the concepts of "Jesus only" and world mission. These ideas are at the heart of the C&MA identity. However, there has long been a sense within C&MA circles that these core ideas are not always given the kind of attention that they deserve so that they can dynamically shape the movement as it faces the challenges of being the church in the twenty-first century. This volume is a resource for Alliance churches that will help them re-engage with the central tenets of Alliance theology and spirituality in a way that will ultimately inspire greater passion for the cause of Christ in the world as it is uniquely expressed through the movement known as the Christian and Missionary Alliance.

  • ISBN : 1465392335

Download or read book The Dark Side of Hope written by Karen Krett and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2011-11-30 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Using her deep understanding of self-psychological theory and her own extensive clinical experience, Karen Krett offers us a scholarly yet down-to-earth examination of hope. For too long, hope has been promoted as an unmitigated virtue without any consideration of its dark side. Yet as Krett shows through revealing clinical examples, hope may also impede development and contribute to psychological suffering. Her book serves as a wonderful guide from hope’s dark side to the light.” Doris Brothers, Ph.D., author of Toward a Psychology of Uncertainty: Trauma-Centered Psychoanalysis and Falling Backward: An Exploration of Trust and Self-Experience. Hope saturates the cultural air we breathe: in movies, songs, advertising, political slogans and self-help books. Now, for the first time, Karen Krett, LCSW, is putting “hope” on the therapist’s couch. Krett examines the duality of hope. In childhood, hope can be the emotional glue that keeps us from falling apart, from losing the thread of life. In adulthood, unconscious patterns of hoping for what can never be often interfere with our ability to make good choices in love and work. It may seem as if giving up any hope would mean the end of us, but Krett offers a refreshingly different perspective: by breaking the hold of the dark side of hope, we can become free to direct ourselves toward hopes which can be realized.
