Download or read book What I Say written by Aldon Lynn Nielsen and published by University of Alabama Press. This book was released on 2015-06-15 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What I Say: Innovative Poetry by Black Writers in America is the second book in a landmark two-volume anthology that explodes narrow definitions of African American poetry by examining experimental poems often excluded from previous scholarship. The first volume, Every Goodbye Ain’t Gone, covers the period from the end of World War II to the mid-1970s. In What I Say, editors Aldon Lynn Nielsen and Lauri Ramey have assembled a comprehensive and dynamic collection that brings this pivotal work up to the present day. The elder poets in this collection, such as Nathaniel Mackey, C. S. Giscombe, Will Alexander, and Ron Allen, came of age during and were powerfully influenced by the Black Arts Movement, and What I Say grounds the collection in its black modernist roots. In tracing the fascinating and unexpected paths of experimentation these poets explored, however, Nielsen and Ramey reveal the tight delineations of African American poetry that omitted noncanonical forms. This invigorating panoply of work, when restored, brings into focus the creatively elastic frontiers and multifaceted expressions of contemporary black poetry. Several of the poets discussed in What I Say forged relationships with members of the L=A=N=G=U=A=G=E poetry movement and participated in the broader community of innovative poetry that emerged in the late 1970s and early 1980s and continues to exert a powerful influence today. Each volume can stand on its own, and reading them in tandem will provide a clear vision of how innovative African American poetries have evolved across the twentieth century and into the twenty-first. What I Say is infinitely teachable, compelling, and rewarding. It will appeal to a broad readership of poets, poetics teachers, poetics scholars, students of African American literature in nonnarrative forms, Afro-futurism, and what lies between the modern and the contemporary in global and localized writing practices.

Book excerpt: ""Yet the voice of Will Alexander, who here commemorates Lamantia in his pluperfect poem The Brimstone Boat, rose hardly more than a quarter century later... In this automatistically extended poem, we are witness to the passage of energies from the older to the younger poet, as Alexander charts Lamantia's life and writings across a Renaissance globe... It is here as well that Alexander succeeds Lamantia, who died in 2005, as America's greatest living surrealist poet--as the new poet at the helm on the brimstone boat, on a voyage of 'perpetual exploration.'""--ANDREW JORON The volume starts off with the 81 pages of the title poem, then 14 pages for three shorter poems, followed by 19 pages devoted to a glossary, then 50 pages for the content of four essays, and finally 3 pages of post-notes. On the cover, the frontispiece, and the end page, are three works by the American surrealist Marie Wilson; also included are eight pencil drawings by Will Alexander and two large photographs of Lamantia and Alexander.

Book The Coming Mental Range

Download or read book The Coming Mental Range written by Will Alexander and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new collection of short prose writings in Will Alexander's signature "vertical philosophy." THE COMING MENTAL RANGE brings readers deep into the revolutionary poetics and philosophy of multi-disciplinary artist, writer, and musician Will Alexander. Gathering together a group of Alexander's short prose writings in his signature "vertical philosophy" with essays in poetics touching on the work of admired artists and poets (Byron Baker, Wanda Coleman, Pablo Jofré, Bob Kaufman, and Ghérasim Luca to name a few), in addition to several key interviews with the author, The Coming Mental Range serves as a critical introduction to Alexander's work and thought, and as a companion to volumes in poetry and philosophy like Divine Blue Light (City Lights, 2022), Refractive Africa (New Directions, 2021), and Towards the Primeval Lightning Field (O Books, 1998). In The Coming Mental Range, "language crystallizes as imaginal blazing, as musical incandescence," and we are swept along in its roaring tides to other shores. As Alexander writes, "What is most concerning language must never fail at convincing, at emancipating its readership via transgressive spiral." "As readers of Alexander's writing have come to expect, it is swarming with information from a vast library -- like one lost in Alexandria -- that the author has absorbed into his bloodstream: philosophy; science of all kinds from color theory to the study of insects and lemurs; alchemy, geography; the Dogon; mining in Zimbabwe in 41,000 B.C.; science fiction; and the output of little-known writers. And really this is just the tip of the iceberg."--John Yau "The desire in such writing is for a paradise of language, for the creation in language of a reality that uses particles that ignite new constellations as they foment interlocking nonsequitur constellations that ignite new constellations as they burst."--Clayton Eshleman "Will Alexander is our alchemist. We are his raw materials." -- Andrei Codrescu Literary Nonfiction. Poetry. Essay. Hybrid. Poetics. African & African American Studies.

Book Singing in Magnetic Hoofbeat

Download or read book Singing in Magnetic Hoofbeat written by Will Alexander and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "One of the most prolific and original figures in the field of contemporary literature, Will Alexander is known worldwide for his arresting explorations of European and Caribbean surrealism, postcolonial history, twentieth-century philosophy, and contemporary scientific theory. Here, Alexander undertakes nothing less than a redefinition of the essay form itself, opening an "artery of twilight" wherein aesthetic, political, historical, social, cultural, scientific, and theoretical discourses often become indistinguishable elements of a holistic investigation into the composition--or, re-composition--of the physical and metaphysical worlds. Singing in Magnetic Hoofbeat is an indispensable record of Alexander's thought, and confirms his reputation as one of the foremost exponents of Afro-futurist modernism."--P.[4] of cover.

Book At Night on the Sun

Download or read book At Night on the Sun written by Will Alexander and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poetry. Drama. African & African American Studies. "The new powerful play by Will Alexander, AT NIGHT ON THE SUN, seems to be the beginning of a new phase in his work as a playwright. After his four earlier plays, that have been collected as INSIDE THE EARTHQUAKE PALACE: 4 PLAYS (Chax Press, 2011), and that may be considered an homage to Federico Garca Lorca, the master of 'mystery plays,' the new play comes close to realize the ideas of Antonin Artaud's 'theatre of cruelty,' although Alexander gives a personal switch to that concept. While Lorca shows in his plays how man falls victim of moral constraints and pitiless fate--as is the case in Alexander's earlier plays--Artaud emphasizes the painful drama of human awareness of his immovable subjection to fate; it is that awareness that shows the cruelty of human existence. Artaud has always stressed the fact that his concept of cruelty as an awareness of fate is much broader than just the experience of sadism or bloodshed. In AT NIGHT ON THE SUN, Alexander evokes the existential struggle between the basic human instinct of destruction, bloodthirstiness and war, and the enlightening discovery of the advantages to mankind of peacefulness and harmonious co-existence. He sets this drama in the ancient Indian empire of Asoka, the legendary ruthless conqueror of all his neighboring states, who unexpectedly decided to stop his reign of war and terror to replace it by a reign of peacefulness between all the peoples of his great empire. His invincible armies were dissolved, to the perplexity of his generals. This revolutionary change of war into peace inflicted a cruel crisis to Asoka's ministers of war. Alexander's play enacts their desperate debates about the loss of their reason for existence, confronted with Asoka's determination to create an empire of peace. AT NIGHT ON THE SUN is a very original philosophic drama, sustained by Will Alexander's wonderful poetic language and his peerless images: it is impressive theatre and extraordinary dramatic poetry."--Laurens Vancrevel "As the curtain rises on Will Alexander's adroit pan-African pageant, courtiers puzzle, stew and snipe over the central mystery of their existence--the absence of King Asoka. Where is he? Can mere ministers of war decide, or do the eerie signals demand the counsel of the magicians? What is he doing, what does he intend? Is intention still on the table? So the old ways play themselves out, but on Asoka's return a table of glittering galaxies play themselves out like cards from the future. Like Lorraine Hansberry's Black Arts Movement era masterpiece Les Blancs, Alexander's AT NIGHT ON THE SUN presents a planet's struggle for self-determination as an occasion for both joy and fear. It is a work of art for our age and for ages yet to come."--Kevin Killian

Book Inside the Earthquake Palace

Download or read book Inside the Earthquake Palace written by Will Alexander and published by Chax Press. This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drama. Poetry. African American Studies. "Will Alexander's poetic universe could be a 1 + 1000 surface ('folded-in expanse') imbedded in a 1 + 1000 + X dimensional Historical Space-Time (the 'transverse'), with Ancient-Future Language particles and ?elds trapped on the folded-in expanse while Non-Institutional Unrepressed Images (NIUI's) are free to access the transverse. At least one of Alexander's extra spatial dimensions could be very large (cosmic proportional) relative to the Standard Global Media Scale of Capitalist Misapprehension of 'personhood, ' which lowers the Fundamental Human Individual's Volitional Scale, possibly even down to Trans-Sub-Cultural Electroweak Level. This revolutionary picture arises in the framework of recent developments in Uber-Performativity in Contemporary Poetics (r) as regards Spontaneous Mass Bubble Nucleation of Language as possible New Life Form Generation (NLFG's). Generalized Over-Accumulated-Wealth SuckBot Aesthetics cannot describe Present Ever-Dying Noxious Cultures at high enough energies and so must be replaced by an Alexanderized PolyPerson Theory of Drama, picking up significant corrections as the Fundamental Ideological Corpus Energy Scale is approached. Thus, at high energies Infra-Continental Cultural Relevance 'leaks' into the transverse, behaving in a truly higher-dimensional way" Rodrigo Toscano."

Book Towards the Primeval Lightning Field

Download or read book Towards the Primeval Lightning Field written by Will Alexander and published by Litmus Press. This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poetry. African American Studies. Philosophy. Essays. Now available as a second edition with a new preface from the author, Will Alexander's TOWARDS THE PRIMEVAL LIGHTNING FIELD (O Books, 1998) is a work of vertical philosophy revealing the strata of cultures and language, like geographical layers seen all at once. These essays comprise Alexander's search for origins outside the warrens of the visible, revealing a singular imagination that moves with the force of a manifesto and the impossible dexterity of the unknown. Described by Eliot Weinberger as probably the only African-American poet to take Aimé Cesaire as a spiritual father, Alexander's singular voice resonates far past the constrictions of the rational world. His work resembles no one's and is instantly recognizable. In part, he is an ecstatic surrealist on imaginal hyperdrive. He is probably the only African-American poet to take Aimé Césaire as a spiritual father...[Alexander] is a poet whose ecstasy derives from the scientific description of the stuff and the workings of the world.--Eliot Weinberger Will Alexander is by far the most original poet working in the United States today. A major force in the dissemination of surrealism, there is absolutely no one who sounds like Alexander, and he, most emphatically sounds like no one else.--Justin Desmangles If the quotidian amounts to little more than a dossier of unitary suffering, then Will Alexander's visionary essays commence the ignition of evolution beyond inclemency. Césaire, Lorca, Cheikh Anta Diop, non-European philosophy and cosmology, alchemical and anti-statist traditions: all animate this work; its range is incomparable. André Breton wrote that for surrealism 'life is elsewhere;' TOWARDS RGE PRIMEVAL LIGHTNING FIELD takes us in pleasure and terror along the way to that range, shimmering beyond grim power, 'where the waters and suns are both kindled by splendour.'--Barry Maxwell
