This book was released on 2018-05 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Review of Some Provisions of the Proposed New Constitution and Discipline of the Remonstrant Synod of Ulster: A Discourse, Delivered at the Annual Meeting of the Members of the Remonstrant Congregation, York-Street, Belfast, on Sunday, January 4, 1857, and Published at Their Request Our Synod has been engaged, of late, in remodelling its Constitution and Discipline. The Remonstrants, upon first organizing themselves into a distinct Body, deemed it advisable to retain the Code of the Church from which they had separated. The extensive ecclesiastical machinery, however, of the General Synod of Ulster was but ill adapted to the small Remonstrant Synod. Like the armour in which Saul arrayed the stripling shepherd, it was cumbrous. In course of time, its nu suitableness became generally felt and, at length, in the year 1848, our Synod appointed a Committee to prepare f'a plain, brief, and practical Code of Discipline, adapted to the circumstances of this Church. The draft of the principal part of a new Code was presented by the Committee, at the late Annual Meeting of Synod in July last, and was referred to a Special General Meeting, to consider its provisions and finally determine as to its adoption. This meeting was held in November but, out of consideration for a respected member, who, in consequence of a severe family bereavement, was no longer able to attend, it was agreed, early in the second session, to adjourn till the beginning of next March. In consequence, partly, of the interest which has been excited in the subject by the November meeting, but, chiefly, on account of the important principles involved in the issue, I most willingly comply With a request of your Committee to devote this morning's Discourse to a consideration of some remarkable provisions of the new Code convinced that, when the rights of Conscience and the interests of Truth are being endangered in our Church, as I believe they are. This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 556 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Records of the General Synod of Ulster, From 1691 to 1820, Vol. 1 of 3: 1691-1720 The project of publishing the manuscript Minutes of the Proceedings of the General Synod of Ulster originated in a suggestion of the late Rev. Thomas Witherow, D. D., LL. D., Professor of Church History and Pastoral Theology in Magee College, Londonderry. Professor Witherow, in 1871, on the recommendation of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland - of which the Synod of Ulster since 1840 has been a constituent part - obtained from the Synod the loan of its unprinted records, then in the keeping of the Rev. Robert Park, Clerk of the Synod and First Clerk of the Assembly; and also received permission to make extracts from them for historical and literary purposes. A similar use of the records had been previously enjoyed by Professor James Seaton Reid, D. D., M. R. I. A., former Clerk of the Synod and of the Assembly, and by Professor W. D. Killen, D. D., President of the Assembly's College, Belfast. In 1872, when returning the minutes and thanking by letter the Synod for their use, Dr. Witherow suggested that the official records from 1691 to 1803 should be printed, lest an accident might lead to their destruction. This communication was referred to the Assembly then in session, with the recommendation that steps should be taken to have the suggestion carried out; but though a committee was nominated to inquire and report on the expediency of the undertaking, and this committee had the subject before it for two years, at the end of that time it was thought unwise to proceed, until a more prosperous condition of the fund of the Church which is available for such purposes, and a livelier interest of the members in the publication, would warrant the necessary outlay. In 1877, a memorial to the Assembly from the Presbyterian Historical Society of the United States of America, asking for books, documents, and other material which might illustrate Presbyterian history, and an application from the minister of another denomination for leave to consult the manuscript records of the Synod, revived the idea of their publication; and a Committee of the Assembly for Historical Purposes was appointed, with the present Clerk of the Synod and Clerk of the Assembly as Convener, and directed among other duties to inquire into the cost of putting the ancient minutes through the press and to take steps to raise funds for that object. This Committee has now in part performed the task intrusted to it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
