Download or read book Sweden and National Liberation in Southern Africa Formation of a popular opinion 1950 1970 written by Tor Sellström and published by Nordic Africa Institute. This book was released on 1999 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1969, the Swedish parliament endorsed a policy of direct assistance to the liberation movements in Southern Africa. Sweden thus became the first Western country to enter into a relationship with organizations that elsewhere in the West were shunned as "Communist" or "terrorist." This book-the first in a two-volume study on Sweden & the regional struggles for majority rule & national independence-traces the background to the relationship. Presenting the actors & factors behind the support to MPLA of Angola, FRELIMO of Mozambique, SWAPO of Namibia, ZANU & ZAPU of Zimbabwe, & ANC of South Africa, it addresses the question why Sweden established close relations with the very movements that eventually would assume state power in their respective countries. The second volume (later this year) will discuss how the support was expressed, covering the period from 1970 until the democratic elections in South Africa in 1994.

Download or read book Inside the Jihad written by Omar Nasiri and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2007-03-09 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Europe's burgeoning terrorist underground, to the training camps of Afghanistan, to the radical mosques of London, this is a unique and chilling insider's story of the rise of Al Qaeda and the intelligence services that struggle to contain it. Between 1994 and 2000, Omar Nasiri worked as a secret agent for Europe's top foreign intelligence services -- including France's DGSE (Direction Gérale de la Séritéxtéeure), and Britain's MI5 and MI6. From the netherworld of Islamist cells in Belgium, to the training camps of Afghanistan, to the radical mosques of London, he risked his life to defeat the emerging global network that the West would come to know as Al Qaeda. Now, for the first time, Nasiri shares the story of his life -- a life balanced precariously between the world of Islamic jihadists and the spies who pursue them. As an Arab and a Muslim, he was able to infiltrate the rigidly controlled Afghan training camps, where he encountered men who would later be known as the most-wanted terrorists on earth, going so far as to form a sleeper cell in Europe with Al Qaeda's top recruiter in Pakistan and London's radical cleric Abu Qatada. A detailed portrait of a complex man who fought on both sides,Inside the Jihad is a terrifying, suspenseful look at an organization that continues to be a global threat.

Download or read book Liberation in Southern Africa written by Tor Sellström and published by Nordic Africa Institute. This book was released on 2002 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interviews in this book were conducted for the Nordic Africa Institute’s research project ‘National Liberation in Southern Africa—The role of the Nordic countries’. Around 80 representatives of the Southern African liberation movements, as well as Swedish and other opinion makers, administrators and politicians, reflect on the Nordic support to these struggles. Prominent contemporary leaders—among them Joaquim Chissano from Mozambique, Kenneth Kaunda from Zambia and Thabo Mbeki from South Africa—give their views on a relationship that largely developed outside the public arena and of which there is scant evidence in open sources. The book is a reference source to a unique North-South relationship in the Cold War period.
Download or read book The Tar Baby Option written by Anthony Lake and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2000-01-15 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "No area of the world has been viewed by Americans with greater moral disapproval and yet less attention than southern Africa," writes Anthony Lake in the introduction to The "Tar Baby" Option. Feeling that there is much to be learned from an examination of the American response to the Rhodesian problem, he offers a detailed account of America's Southern Rhodesia policy since the Smith government's unilateral declaration of independence from Great Britain in 1965. The book provides information essential to an understanding of the American approach to the current crisis in the region. The author's use of previously undisclosed materials and interviews with U.S. foreign policymakers gives the reader an inside look not only at the Rhodesian question but also at the politics of American foreign policy.

How this came about, and at what cost, is the subject of this study which is based on unpublished documents and extensive interviews with a large range of the key activists in the struggle. The study should be of interest to everyone concerned with southern Africa. North America: Ohio U Press
