Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By 1890, the first Greek immigrants to Atlanta had settled into an area still widely populated by Confederate veterans. In a city without the large immigrant presence common in the nation's major urban areas, the Greeks were initially received as undesirable visitors by the state's and city's leaders. While the Greek Orthodox Church of Atlanta endured financial hardship, it continued to aid funerals, hospitals and orphanages. These Greeks moved from the city's streets as fruit vendors into more established businesses. Christ Gyfteas's fruit stand at the corner of Broad and Marietta became the California Fruit Company. By 1911, 40 percent of Greeks were proprietors or partners in a variety of businesses like cafés, restaurants, soda fountains and groceries. Author Stephen Georgeson explores the Greek immigrants' experiences in their first three decades in Atlanta.

Book Dr Hyde and Mr Stevenson

Download or read book Dr Hyde and Mr Stevenson written by Harold Winfield Kent and published by Tuttle Publishing. This book was released on 2009-02-20 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr. Hyde and Mr. Stevenson is a biography of the Rev. Dr. Charles McEwen Hyde, one of the most influential Americans in 19th century Hawaii. What manner of man was this Dr. Hyde? He was a truly good example of the New England-bred, community-minded leader who throughout the course of several generations formulated the pattern we speak of as "the American way." What role did he play in the history of Hawaii? He was very influential in setting up of the Kamehameha Schools, the Bishop Museum, and various other institutions sponsored by the philanthropist Charles Reed Bishop. He was a major force behind the establishment of the Hawaiian Historical Society, a moving spirit in the development of the Library of Hawaii, and the founder of the Social Science Association in 1882 for which he served as secretary for seventeen years. Also included is a discussion of the open letter of Robert Louis Stevenson.

Book Cross and Crown in Barbados

Download or read book Cross and Crown in Barbados written by Kortright Davis and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2011-05-01 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the late 19th century, Caribbean society was generally controlled by the local plantocracy and the colonial administration of the Europeans. Barbados was so much the pride of the British colonies in the Caribbean that it was called Little England. The life-blood of the society, the Black labouring classes, reaped very little of the social and economic benefits from the Sugar industry which the White planter-class owned and controlled. The Church was also controlled by the planter-class, and it functioned effectively to sustain a pattern of rigid social containment, and to work consistently for the maintenance of the status quo. Political religion in Barbados was therefore an engine of social control of the poor Blacks by the rich Whites. Cross and Crown together created peace and poverty.
