Download or read book Minnesota s Boundary with Canada written by William E. Lass and published by St. Paul : Minnesota Historical Society Press. This book was released on 1980 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The boundary between the U.S. and Canada is far more than a line on a map or a demarcation on the ground. In a broad sense, it represents the aspirations, successes, frustrations, failures, and compromises of the two largest countries on the North American continent. Behind this unfortified boundary lie the negotiations, surveys, and intrigue leading to the final establishment of this international border that had its beginnings in the eighteenth century.

Book Minnesota s Boundary with Canada

Download or read book Minnesota s Boundary with Canada written by William E. Lass and published by Minnesota Historical Society. This book was released on 1980 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lass's book will be the standard work on the Lake Superior to Red River boundary, but it reaches beyond those limits defined in the title. In order to make any sense out of the border, Lass has gone a long way towards writing a good general survey of Canadian-American boundary issues. The book is based on an extensive use of published and manuscript materials, and it is well illustrated with photographs and maps, including reproductions of important historic maps."--Www.mhs.ca/docs/mb_history/04/boundarycommission.shtml.

Book Northland A 4 000 Mile Journey Along America s Forgotten Border

This book was released on 2018-07-03 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Romantic, urgent, valuable and appealing as hell.” —Andrew McCarthy, New York Times Book Review Writer Porter Fox spent three years exploring 4,000 miles of the border between Maine and Washington, traveling by canoe, freighter, car, and foot. In Northland, he blends a deeply reported and beautifully written story of the region’s history with a riveting account of his travels. Setting out from the easternmost point in the mainland United States, Fox follows explorer Samuel de Champlain’s adventures across the Northeast; recounts the rise and fall of the timber, iron, and rail industries; crosses the Great Lakes on a freighter; and traces the forty-ninth parallel from Minnesota to the Pacific Ocean. He weaves in his encounters with residents, border guards, Indian activists, and militia leaders to give a dynamic portrait of the northland today, wracked by climate change, water wars, oil booms, and border security.

Book North of the Color Line

Download or read book North of the Color Line written by Sarah-Jane Mathieu and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2010-11-29 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: North of the Color Line examines life in Canada for the estimated 5,000 blacks, both African Americans and West Indians, who immigrated to Canada after the end of Reconstruction in the United States. Through the experiences of black railway workers and their union, the Order of Sleeping Car Porters, Sarah-Jane Mathieu connects social, political, labor, immigration, and black diaspora history during the Jim Crow era. By World War I, sleeping car portering had become the exclusive province of black men. White railwaymen protested the presence of the black workers and insisted on a segregated workforce. Using the firsthand accounts of former sleeping car porters, Mathieu shows that porters often found themselves leading racial uplift organizations, galvanizing their communities, and becoming the bedrock of civil rights activism. Examining the spread of segregation laws and practices in Canada, whose citizens often imagined themselves as devoid of racism, Mathieu historicizes Canadian racial attitudes, and explores how black migrants brought their own sensibilities about race to Canada, participating in and changing political discourse there.

Book excerpt: If the frontier, in all its boundless possibility, was a central organizing metaphor for much of U.S. history, today it is arguably the border that best encapsulates the American experience, as xenophobia, economic inequality, and resurgent nationalism continue to fuel conditions of division and limitation. This boldly interdisciplinary volume explores the ways that historical and contemporary actors in the U.S. have crossed such borders—whether national, cultural, ethnic, racial, or conceptual. Together, these essays suggest new ways to understand borders while encouraging connection and exchange, even as social and political forces continue to try to draw lines around and between people.
