Book The Future of Mining in South Africa Sunset or Sunrise

Download or read book The Future of Mining in South Africa Sunset or Sunrise written by Valiani, Salimah and published by MISTRA. This book was released on 2018-12-28 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The future of mining in South Africa is hotly contested. Wide-ranging views from multiple quarters rarely seem to intersect, placing emphasis on different questions without engaging in holistic debate. This book aims to catalyse change by gathering together fragmented views into unifying conversations. It highlights the importance of debating the future of mining in South Africa and for reaching consensus in other countries across the mineral-dependent globe. It covers issues such as the potential of platinum to spur industrialisation, land and dispossession on the platinum belt, the roles of the state and capital in mineral development, mining in the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, the experiences of women in and affected by mining since the late 19th century and mine worker organising: history and lessons and how post-mine rehabilitation can be tackled. It was inspired not only by an appreciation of South Africa’s extensive mineral endowments, but also by a realisation that, while the South African mining industry performs relatively well on many technical indicators, its management of broader social issues leaves much to be desired. It needs to be deliberated whether the mining industry can play as critical a role going forward as it did in the evolution of the country’s economy.

Book Into the deep

    Book Details:
  • Author : Ignacio Acosta
  • Publisher : Neofelis Verlag
  • Release : 2023-09-20
  • ISBN : 3958083013
  • Pages : 184 pages

Download or read book Into the deep written by Ignacio Acosta and published by Neofelis Verlag. This book was released on 2023-09-20 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Der Katalog erscheint zur interdisziplinären Ausstellung Into the deep. *** The extraction of raw materials has increasingly developed into an ecological, economic, political, and social problem of global proportions. Since the resources on Earth are finite, there is a constant search for new mining sites that sometimes seem surreal, such as with deep-sea mining and deep-space mining. Into the deep takes a critical look at the many-layered complexities of mining for raw materials in the deep sea and in space, as well as forms of resistance and activism against the exploitation of people and the environment. Drawing on Friedrichshafen's history of industrialism, the exhibition also focuses on the raw material aluminium. The catalog is being published to accompany the interdisciplinary exhibition Into the deep. Mines of the future, which can be seen until the 5th of November, 2023 at the Zeppelin Museum Friedrichshafen. With contributions by Ignacio Acosta, Agnes Bidmon, Jürgen Bleibler, Bureau d'études (Léonore Bonaccini & Xavier Fourt), Michael David, El Laboratorio de Artes Gráficas del Desierto de Atacama (LAGDA), Claudia Emmert, Charlotte Ickler, Armin Linke, Ina Neddermeyer, Kristina Õllek, Bethany Rigby, Frauke Stengel, and Caroline Wind.

Book Mining North America

Download or read book Mining North America written by John R. McNeill and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2017-07-03 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Over the past five hundred years, North Americans have increasingly turned to mining to produce many of their basic social and cultural objects. From cell phones to cars and roadways, metal pots to wall tile and even talcum powder, minerals products have become central to modern North American life. As this process has unfolded, mining has also indelibly shaped the natural world and North Americans' relationship with it. Mountains have been honeycombed, rivers poisoned, and forests leveled. The effects of these environmental transformations have fallen unevenly across North American societies. Mining North America examines these developments. Drawing on the work of scholars from Mexico, the United States, and Canada, this book explores how mining has shaped North America over the last half millennium. It covers an array of minerals and geographies while seeking to draw mining into the core debates that animate North American environmental history generally. Taken together, the authors' contributions make a powerful case for the centrality of mining in forging North American environments and societies"--Provided by publisher.
