Book Minimizing Gamma Exposure During Boron Neutron Capture Therapy Treatment at PSBR Using MCNP

Download or read book Minimizing Gamma Exposure During Boron Neutron Capture Therapy Treatment at PSBR Using MCNP written by Jackson Buchko and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) is a form of targeted radiotherapy meant to selectively deliver high amounts of energy to tumor cells while being more likely to spare healthy tissue than traditional forms of cancer treatment. This method of cancer treatment uses a stable isotope of boron, 10B, which has a high probability of absorbing a neutron, and the reaction resulting from this absorption leaves this isotope in an excited state of 11B, which ultimately fissions to produce an alpha particle. This alpha particle is what delivers the energy to the tumor, and the fact that these particles do not travel far, sparing healthy tissue and making alpha particles ideal for targeted radiotherapy. The issue is that neutron sources, such as the Penn State Breazeale Reactor (PSBR), also produce gamma radiation in addition to neutrons, exposing patients to additional, unwanted radiation. The aim of this project was to help combat patient exposure to gamma radiation from the neutron source used during boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT). A model of Neutron Beam Port 4 (NBP4) at the PSBR was created in MCNP to help accomplish this goal. This model was created to execute simulations involving the neutron beam port used in the BNCT procedure. From this model execution, neutron and photon flux profiles were determined at varying axial and radial locations along the beam port. The results of these calculations were then to be used to make recommendations towards the implementation of some shielding geometry in NBP4 for BNCT procedures. This model was originally to be executed under four conditions: no shielding, and gamma ray shielding made of concrete, steel, and lead. Future work is recommended to achieve more detailed MCNP model results.

Download or read book Plastic Scintillators written by Matthieu Hamel and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-07-10 with total page 647 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces the physics and chemistry of plastic scintillators (fluorescent polymers) that are able to emit light when exposed to ionizing radiation, discussing their chemical modification in the early 1950s and 1960s, as well as the renewed upsurge in interest in the 21st century. The book presents contributions from various researchers on broad aspects of plastic scintillators, from physics, chemistry, materials science and applications, covering topics such as the chemical nature of the polymer and/or the fluorophores, modification of the photophysical properties (decay time, emission wavelength) and loading of additives to make the material more sensitive to, e.g., fast neutrons, thermal neutrons or gamma rays. It also describes the benefits of recent technological advances for plastic scintillators, such as nanomaterials and quantum dots, which allow features that were previously not achievable with regular organic molecules or organometallics.

Book Simulation of ODE PDE Models with MATLAB OCTAVE and SCILAB

Download or read book Simulation of ODE PDE Models with MATLAB OCTAVE and SCILAB written by Alain Vande Wouwer and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-06-07 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Simulation of ODE/PDE Models with MATLAB®, OCTAVE and SCILAB shows the reader how to exploit a fuller array of numerical methods for the analysis of complex scientific and engineering systems than is conventionally employed. The book is dedicated to numerical simulation of distributed parameter systems described by mixed systems of algebraic equations, ordinary differential equations (ODEs) and partial differential equations (PDEs). Special attention is paid to the numerical method of lines (MOL), a popular approach to the solution of time-dependent PDEs, which proceeds in two basic steps: spatial discretization and time integration. Besides conventional finite-difference and element techniques, more advanced spatial-approximation methods are examined in some detail, including nonoscillatory schemes and adaptive-grid approaches. A MOL toolbox has been developed within MATLAB®/OCTAVE/SCILAB. In addition to a set of spatial approximations and time integrators, this toolbox includes a collection of application examples, in specific areas, which can serve as templates for developing new programs. Simulation of ODE/PDE Models with MATLAB®, OCTAVE and SCILAB provides a practical introduction to some advanced computational techniques for dynamic system simulation, supported by many worked examples in the text, and a collection of codes available for download from the book’s page at www.springer.com. This text is suitable for self-study by practicing scientists and engineers and as a final-year undergraduate course or at the graduate level.

Download or read book Applications of Research Reactors written by International Atomic Energy Agency and published by International Atomic Energy Agency. This book was released on 2014 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication is a comprehensive study that reviews the current situation in a great number of applications of research reactors. It revises the contents of IAEA TECDOC-1234, The Applications of Research Reactors, giving detailed updates on each field of research reactor uses worldwide. Reactors of all sizes and capabilities can benefit from the sharing of current practices and research enabled via this updated version, which describes the requirements for practicing methods as diverse as neutron activation analysis, education and training, neutron scattering and neutron imaging, silicon doping and radioisotope production, material/fuel irradiation and testing, and some others. Many underutilised research reactors can learn how to diversify their technical capabilities, staff and potential commercial partners and users seeking research reactor services and products. The content of the publication has also been strengthened in terms of current issues facing the vast majority of research reactors by including sections describing user and customer relations as well as strategic planning considerations.

Book Strategic Planning for Research Reactors

Download or read book Strategic Planning for Research Reactors written by International Atomic Energy Agency and published by . This book was released on 2017-04-30 with total page 61 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication is a revision of IAEA-TECDOC-1212 which primarily focused on enhancing the utilization of existing research reactors. This updated version also provides guidance on how to develop and implement a strategic plan for a new research reactor project and will be of particular interest for organizations which are preparing a feasibility study to establish such a new facility. This publication will enable managers to determine more accurately the actual and potential capabilities of an existing reactor, or the intended purpose and type of a new facility. At the same time, management will be able to match these capabilities to stakeholders/users' needs and establish the strategy of meeting such needs. In addition, several annexes are presented, including some examples as clarification to the main text and ready-to-use templates as assistance to the team drafting a strategic plan.
