Book Minimally Invasive Three dimensional Site Characterization System Final Report

Download or read book Minimally Invasive Three dimensional Site Characterization System Final Report written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper presents an improved for hazardous site characterization. The major components of the systems are: (1) an enhanced cone penetrometer test, (2) surface geophysical surveys and (3) a field database and visualization code. The objective of the effort was to develop a method of combining geophysical data with cone penetrometer data in the field to produce a synergistic effect. Various aspects of the method were tested at three sites. The results from each site are discussed and the data compared. This method allows the data to be interpreted more fully with greater certainty, is faster, cheaper and leads to a more accurate site characterization. Utilizing the cone penetrometer test rather than the standard drilling, sampling and laboratory testing reduces the workers exposure to hazardous materials and minimizes the hazardous material disposal problems. The technologies employed in this effort are, for the most part, state-of-the-art procedures. The approach of using data from various measurement systems to develop a synergistic effect was a unique contribution to environmental site characterization. The use of the cone penetrometer for providing ''ground truth'' data and as a platform for subsurface sensors in environmental site characterization represents a significant advancement in environmental site characterization.

Book Mathematics and Physics of Emerging Biomedical Imaging

Download or read book Mathematics and Physics of Emerging Biomedical Imaging written by Committee on the Mathematics and Physics of Emerging Dynamic Biomedical Imaging and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1996-03-13 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This cross-disciplinary book documents the key research challenges in the mathematical sciences and physics that could enable the economical development of novel biomedical imaging devices. It is hoped that the infusion of new insights from mathematical scientists and physicists will accelerate progress in imaging. Incorporating input from dozens of biomedical researchers who described what they perceived as key open problems of imaging that are amenable to attack by mathematical scientists and physicists, this book introduces the frontiers of biomedical imaging, especially the imaging of dynamic physiological functions, to the educated nonspecialist. Ten imaging modalities are covered, from the well-established (e.g., CAT scanning, MRI) to the more speculative (e.g., electrical and magnetic source imaging). For each modality, mathematics and physics research challenges are identified and a short list of suggested reading offered. Two additional chapters offer visions of the next generation of surgical and interventional techniques and of image processing. A final chapter provides an overview of mathematical issues that cut across the various modalities.

Book Three dimensional Subsurface Imaging Synthetic Aperture Radar

Download or read book Three dimensional Subsurface Imaging Synthetic Aperture Radar written by and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inadequate resources, aggravated by the limited capabilities of existing site characterization technologies, require that new systems be developed to effectively aid site cleanup. The quantity, condition, and the precise location of buried waste storage containers is often unknown, and is always difficult to assess. Significant safety hazards may also be present at these sites. Therefore, new non-invasive detection techniques are needed that will be cost effective, user friendly, and have a growth path toward a system capable of accessing remote terrain. These detection methods must be economical to use and be capable of exploring large land areas quickly with minimal personnel risk. They should provide the precision for identifying the size, depth, type, and possibly the condition of the waste containers.

Book Contaminants in the Subsurface

Download or read book Contaminants in the Subsurface written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2005-04-23 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At hundreds of thousands of commercial, industrial, and military sites across the country, subsurface materials including groundwater are contaminated with chemical waste. The last decade has seen growing interest in using aggressive source remediation technologies to remove contaminants from the subsurface, but there is limited understanding of (1) the effectiveness of these technologies and (2) the overall effect of mass removal on groundwater quality. This report reviews the suite of technologies available for source remediation and their ability to reach a variety of cleanup goals, from meeting regulatory standards for groundwater to reducing costs. The report proposes elements of a protocol for accomplishing source remediation that should enable project managers to decide whether and how to pursue source remediation at their sites.

Book Glissonean Pedicles Approach in Minimally Invasive Liver Surgery

Download or read book Glissonean Pedicles Approach in Minimally Invasive Liver Surgery written by Benedetto Ielpo and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-12-30 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aim of this book is to present the main minimally invasive approaches to the Glissonean pedicles. This kind of technique for hepatectomy has been gaining interest in recent years and may represent the ideal method to achieve anatomical liver resections. Currently the most performed procedure for liver surgery is still the classic intrafascial approach in which, after entering the Glissonean sheath, the portal triad elements are singularly dissected and isolated. However, this is a quite challenging technique to pursue in a minimally invasive setting. Nowadays the laparoscopic and robotic approach for liver resections are increasing worldwide and the intra or extra hepatic Glissonean approach, in which the portal triad elements are dissected and isolated “en bloc” without entering the Glissonean sheath, can facilitate the surgical technique. Furthermore this strategy allows better identification of the ischemic area and could decrease blood loss during dissection, as the liver inflow is kept under control. This book includes a step-by-step description of each pedicle isolation and section, with original laparoscopic and robotic pictures and videos. HPB surgeons who are interested in this technique may find these pages, written in cooperation with some of the most prominent worldwide experts, to be highly informative and valuable.
