Book Geology and Mineralogy of the Principal Goldfields in South Africa

Download or read book Geology and Mineralogy of the Principal Goldfields in South Africa written by and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This chapter gives a very comprehensive account of the South African goldfields, starting with a summary of the history of gold in South Africa and ending with 145 references. As pointed out, a total of 39 849 502 kg of fine gold was produced in South African mines up to the end of June 1985. This includes the production from gold mines in the Barberton Mountainland, mines extracting gold as a byproduct, and small mining corporations, which together contributed about 1 per cent of the total gold output. If the gold production for the second half of 1985 is taken at 320 000 kg of fine gold, the total output of gold for the period 1884 to 1985 surpassed 40 million kg of fine gold. The geology of the sediments in the Witwatersrand Triad is detailed, special attention being paid to the placers, which are the dominant gold-bearers, to the nature and mode of occurrence of the gold, to the distribution of the gold and heavy minerals, and to the chemical composition of the gold. As a small amount of the gold is not extracted by the processes of gold recovery currently practised on the Witwatersrand (0,1 to 1,0 g/t from a gold content of 5 to 15 g/t), attention is paid to the gold in the residues, which consists of gold enclosed by other minerals, or coated gold, thus shielded from contact with the lixiviant; gold dissolved during leaching then adsorbed by other minerals or by extraneous matter in the mill pulp; large gold particles incompletely dissolved when the residence time in the lixiviant was inadequate; or incompletely dissolved grains as a result of galvanic interaction between gold in contact with certain minerals, causing a decrease in the dissolution rates. Apart from the gold and silver minerals, other minerals of economic importance in these ores are uranium-bearing constituents, platinum-group minerals and cobalt-bearing and nickel-bearing sulpharsenides, and abundant pyrite (used for the production of sulphuric acid). In the current economic climate, they cannot be exploited on their own but are valuable byproducts of the gold. The gold of the Barberton Mountainland is described in a similar way, an account being given of the geological setting, the distribution and ore genesis of the gold mineralization, the mineralogical characteristics of the gold ores, and their refractory nature and treatment. The chapter is illustrated by seven line drawings and 24 photomicrographs. It also contains numerous tables.

Book Annotated Bibliographies of Mineral Deposits in Africa Asia Exclusive of the USSR and Australasia

Download or read book Annotated Bibliographies of Mineral Deposits in Africa Asia Exclusive of the USSR and Australasia written by John Drew Ridge and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-02 with total page 556 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annotated Bibliographies of Mineral Deposits in Africa, Asia (Exclusive of the USSR) and Australasia brings together annotated bibliographies of mineral deposits in Africa, Asia (with the exception of the USSR), and Australasia. Each bibliography is followed by notes to show the deposit's location; geological framework; age and type; structural and stratigraphic relations; conditions of formation; and position in the modified Lindgren classification. Comprised of 25 chapters, this volume begins with an introduction to the more important sources of references in the bibliographies, set down in alphabetical order with the number of references provided by each source. The distribution of deposits by continent and country follows. The deposits include molybdenum, nickel, copper, lead, and tin. Eruptive rocks, the metamorphic cycle, and the mineralization process are addressed, along with liquid immiscibility between silicate magmas and sulfide melts; the geology, mineralogy, and petrology of ore deposits in various mines; and the significance of mineralized breccia pipes. This book will be of value to mineralogists, geologists, and earth and mineral scientists as well as students interested in ore deposits.

Book Geochemistry Mineralogy and Genesis of Gold Deposits

Download or read book Geochemistry Mineralogy and Genesis of Gold Deposits written by I.Y. Nekrasov and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-05-02 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The behaviour of gold in sedimentary, magmatic and postmagmatic processes are studied and 40 gold-bearing minerals including ten which were recently discovered are described. The results are presented of new experimental studies on phase relations in gold-sulphide systems. The solubility & form of gold migration in high-temperature chloride, sulphide and arsenic solutions are determined. Based on the new data, the genesis of gold deposits is studied and a geochemical classification proposed. This book is designed for specialists in the field of gold chemistry, geochemistry and mineralogy and for field geologists surveying and prospecting for gold.

Book Au U Fe Mn Hg Sb W and P Deposits

Download or read book Au U Fe Mn Hg Sb W and P Deposits written by Bozzano G Luisa and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 663 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Handbook of Strata-Bound and Stratiform Ore Deposits, Volume 7: Au, U, Fe, Mn, Hg, Sb, W, and P Deposits focuses on the characteristics, properties, origins, and structures of Au, U, Fe, Mn, Hg, Sb, W, and P deposits. The selection first elaborates on gold in the Proterozoic sediments of South Africa, nature of the Witwatersrand gold-uranium deposits, and origin of Western-States type uranium mineralization. Discussions focus on tectonic conditions, sedimentation, mineralization and alteration, architecture of the Witwatersrand Basin, source of wealth in the Witwatersrand Basin, gold mineralization in South Africa, and ground-rules for gold prospecting. The text then ponders on origin of the Precambrian banded iron-formations, aspects of the sedimentary petrology of cherty iron-formation, and genetic problems and environmental features of volcanosedimentary iron-ore deposits of the Lahn-Dill Type. Concerns cover geological setting, crystallization structures, origin of cherty iron-formations, similarities and differences between banded and oolitic iron-formations, regional geologic distribution, and general diagnostic statement. The manuscript examines sedimentary phosphate deposits, ancient manganese deposits, and freshwater ferromanganese deposits. The selection is a dependable reference for researchers wanting to explore Au, U, Fe, Mn, Hg, Sb, W, and P deposits.
