Download or read book Minerals Collecting and Value across the US Mexico Border written by Elizabeth Emma Ferry and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2013-06-19 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A jewel to those interested in ore mining, mineral collecting and mineralogy, or the anthropology of value.” —American Ethnologist Anthropologist Elizabeth Emma Ferry traces the movement of minerals as they circulate from Mexican mines to markets, museums, and private collections on both sides of the United States-Mexico border. She describes how and why these byproducts of ore mining come to be valued by people in various walks of life as scientific specimens, religious offerings, works of art, and luxury collectibles. The story of mineral exploration and trade defines a variegated transnational space, shedding new light on the complex relationship between these two countries—and on the process of making value itself. “A novel contribution to the anthropology of natural resources.” —Journal of Latin American and Caribbean Anthropology “Highly recommended.” —Choice
Download or read book Minerals of Colorado A 100 Year Record written by Edwin B. Eckel and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2015-12-06 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a summary of the known facts about the minerals that make up the rocks, soils, and ore deposits of Colorado. Compilation and abridgment of the literature from 1858, when gold was discovered, through 1957 (with a few additions for 1958 and 1959) is supplemented by information from unpublished sources. Designed to be of use to both professional and amateur mineralogists, the main part of the report describes the chief occurrences of 445 mineral species,42 of them first found in Colorado, together with many subspecies, varieties, and discredited "type" species. Directions for finding these localities are also given in the text. The bibliography contains more than 800 selected references to the most significant literature on the subject

Download or read book Beryllium written by Edward S. Grew and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2018-12-17 with total page 704 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 50 of Reviews in Mineralogy and Geochemistry treats Beryllium and its cosmogenic isotopes. This volume includes an overview of Be studies in the earth sciences and a systematic classification of Be minerals based on their crystal structure. It treats the analysis of these minerals by the secondary ion mass spectroscopy as well as experimental studies of systems involving Be. Moreover, this volume reviews the behavior of Be in the Solar System, with an emphasis on meteorites, the Moon and Mars, and the implications of this behavior for the evolution of the solar system. It gives an overview of the terrestrial geochemistry of Be and discusses the contamination of the environment by this anthropogenic toxin. It reports use of the longer lived Be-10 to assess erosion rates and other surficial processes and how this isotope can yield independent temporal records of geomagnetic field variations for comparison with records obtained by measuring natural remnant magnetization, be a chemical tracer for processes in convergent margins, and can date events in Cenozoic tectonics. It reviews applications of the shorter lived isotope Be-7 in environmental studies as well. Residual phases include acidic plutonic and volcanic rocks, whose geochemistry and evolution are covered, while granitic pegmatites, which are well-known for their remarkable, if localized, Be enrichments and a wide variety of Be mineral assemblages, are reviewed. Not all Be concentrations have obvious magmatic affinities; for example, one class of emerald deposits results from Be being introduced by heated brines. Pelitic rocks are an important reservoir of Be in the Earth's crust and their metamorphism plays a critical role in recycling of Be in subduction zones, eventually, anatectic processes complete the cycle, providing a source of Be for granitic rocks.
Download or read book Origin Evolution and Biogeographic History of South American Turtles written by Marcelo S. de la Fuente and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-10-17 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The extended continental South American turtle record (Norian to Lujanian) allows us to follow the evolution of this reptile clade from its origins. Several significant stem turtle taxa such as: Palaeochersis talampayensis and Condorchelys antiqua provide information on the first steps of turtle evolution. Others such as: Chubutemys copelloi or Patagoniaemys gasparinae provide clues to the origin of the bizarre horned tortoises of the clade Meiolaniidae. The panpleurodiran species such as Notoemys laticentralis or Notoemys zapatocaensis shed light on the origin of modern pleurodiran turtles. This book explores aquatic and terrestrial cryptodiran turtles, South Gondwana pleurodiran turtles, North Gondwana pleurodiran turtles; Meiolaniforms and early differentiation of Mesozoic turtles.
