Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mineral Resources of the United States, 1920, Vol. 1: Metals The temporary increase In activities which characterized the greater part of 1920 was evidently due in part to the tendency of some to continue the wartime habit of purchasing regardless of price and also to overoptimism on the art of producers, especially those of base metals; but markets ha become overstocked with many commodities and ultimate consumers gradually adopted the policy of postponing the purchase of goods they did not urgently need. As a result, the stagnation that was manifest in a few industries in the summer of 1920 had become general by November. Book Mineral Resources of the United States 1923 Vol 1

Download or read book Mineral Resources of the United States 1923 Vol 1 written by F. J. Katz and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-08 with total page 948 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mineral Resources of the United States, 1923, Vol. 1: Metals All the main branches of the mineral industry in 1923 showed marked improvement over the preceding years of depression, and several established new high records of production. The several elements Of the industry were restored to or had gained over their pre-war vigor with probably only three notable exceptions - copper mining, through overdevelopment followed by curtailment of its market; precious-metal mining, by reason of depreciated purchasing power of its products; and bituminous-coal mining, from excessive capacity and overmanning. The year 1922 had on the whole been one of gradual betterment in tone of business despite the longest and most widespread strike in the annals of coal mining and a strike among the railroad shop crafts which for a few months seriously interfered with transportation. These difficulties had been over come before the beginning Of 1923, and throughout that year there was generally steady improvement in conditions affecting the mining industries. The total value of mineral products of the United States in 1923 was about an increase of 29 per cent over the value in 1922 and 45 per cent over that in 1921, but a decrease of 14 per cent from 1920, when prices were at the peak. Soft-coal mining shared with other industries a continued recovery from the depression of 1921 and the early part of 1922, but the domii nating influence in the market was the after effect of the great strike of the year before. Stocks of consumers at the beginning of the year were low - only tons on January 1. Though above the danger point, this was not enough to conduce to a feeling of safety, and in consequence prices were high. The average spot price in January, according to Coal Age, was a ton, against in the corresponding month of 1922. Congestion of the railroads pre vented rapid accumulation Oi reserves until the winter peak of con sumption was passed, and distribution continued under nominal supervision by the Federal Fuel Distributor. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mineral Resources of the United States, 1921, Vol. 1: Metals Little net change in the quantity of coal in storage occurred during the year. On January 1, 1921, consumers' stocks were about tons. A steady decline during the first half of the year was offset by a rapid accumulation Of stocks in anticipation of the railroad workers' strike, and by December 31 stocks amounted to tons, or 41 days' supply at the rate of consumption then prevailing. The expected miners' strike, which began April 1, 1922, caused far-sighted consumers to increase their stocks still more during the first quarter of the new year. In sharp contrast to the bituminous - coal industry, the anthracite mines continued steadily at work through most Of 1921. The total output of freshly mined coal, from which the requirements of house holders are met, exceeded that Of 1920. The surplus in excess Of current requirements was stored by the producers. Not until late in November did the cumulative effect of the industrial depression and a mild winter force a lessening of activity in the anthracite region. Figures showing the mineral production Of the country are available from the census returns for 1880, however, and com parisons are possible from that year to date. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mineral Resources of the United States, 1919, Vol. 1: Metals The base metals-copper, lead, and zinc -- also declined in output and in value, although the roduction Of much of the lead ore was favored by its relatively bigli silver content. The average prices of these metals also declined, and although they are still considerably higher than before the war, they are believed by many to have reached the minimum for the post -- war period. The poor demand for these metals has continued well into 1920. Iron ore declined 12 per cent and pig iron 21 per cent in output, owing in part to the poor demand for structural materials in the first part of 1919 but largely to the steel and coal strikes in the last part Of the year.
