Book excerpt: Portugal is one of the richest countries in thermal and mineral water resources of the world. These thermal and mineral waters show a large variety in chemical compositions. From around 500 mineral springs and wells the chemical compositions were collected from public sources and these are plotted on maps that show the distribution of 13 different elements (lithium, sodium, magnesium, calcium, aluminium, iron, fluoride, chloride, sulphate, nitrate, carbonate, sulphide and silica) as well as the total dissolved solids and the pH. These maps show how the chemistry of the thermal and mineral waters are related to the very diverse geology of Portugal. The maps that are presented in this Atlas are very useful for several scientific and geochemical purposes, such as geological, chemical, medical and environmental sciences, as well as technological applications in industry, balneotherapy and geothermics. It is hoped that the publication of this Atlas will increase the interest in the geochemistry of the Portuguese thermal and mineral resources and that in the near future more detailed studies involving also chemical analysis of minor and trace elements are presented which would enlarge the application of a new geochemical atlas either in environmental geochemistry or in medical geochemical domains.

Overlays all through thematic maps assisted in geographical and geological evaluations, whereas, at the end, statistical comparisons filtered target selection at all. The total 60 possible natural BAC and its minimum values for efficacy globally reviewed and established were detected at least one BAC occurrence from 703 mineral springs at 525 Brazilian cities. The arguments utilized were important in demonstrating the abundant and diverse existence of this endowment, where its potential health applications are virtually unknown today.

Mineral water may be effervescent (i.e., "sparkling") due to contained gases. Traditionally, mineral waters were used or consumed at their spring sources, often referred to as "taking the waters" or "taking the cure," at places such as spas, baths, or wells. The term spa was used for a place where the water was consumed and bathed in; bath where the water was used primarily for bathing, therapeutics, or recreation; and well where the water was to be consumed. Thermal analysis plays a specific role in the identification and quantitative determination of mineral components of rocks. In spite of the fact that minerals were the first group of materials studied regularly by using thermoanalytical methods, the potential offered by these methods is still not fully utilized in the field of earth sciences. The range of thermoanalytical methods applied in earth sciences is rather wide. Most works are based on DTA. DTA data provide indirect analytical information on a material and the quantification of a reaction is limited.

At the end of the 20th century, the deficit of water for human consumption and economic application forced us to focus on rational use of resources. Increasing the use of renewable energy sources and improving energy efficiency is a challenge for the 21st century. Geothermal energy is heat energy generated and stored in the Earth, accumulated in hydrothermal systems or in dry rocks within the Earth’s crust, in amounts which constitute the energy resources. The sustainable management of geothermal energy resources should be geared towards optimization of energy recovery, but also towards rational management of water resources since geothermal water serves both as energy carrier and also as valuable raw material. Geothermal waters, depending on their hydrogeothermal characteristics, the lithology of the rocks involved, the depth at which the resources occur and the sources of water supply, may be characterized by very diverse physicochemical parameters. This factor largely determines the technology to be used in their exploitation and the way the geothermal water can be used. This book is focused on the effective use of geothermal water and renewable energy for future needs in order to promote modern, sustainable and effective management of water resources. The report presents a regional hydrogeologic framework assessment, including a newly compiled 1:100,000-scale geologic map, five schematic cross sections, estimates of thickness and hydrologic character of the basin fill based on geophysics and available well logs, and a new potentiometric surface map for the study area.
