Although review articles offer some relief from this situation, a more complete overview of a subject can often only be had through the forum of a book. The desire to better understand factors influencing mineral absorption in the intestines provided the impetus for us to organize the symposium Mineral Absorption in the Monogastric GI Tract: Chemical, Nutritional and Physiological Aspects, held June 9-10, 1988 in Toronto, Canada, as part of the 195th National Meeting of the American Chemical Society and the Third North American Chemical Congress. The criteria for inviting participants was that they be currently active in research pertinent to mineral absorption, be publishing results of their investigations and willing to participate in a forum designed to present diverse considerations of mineral absorption to a multidisciplinary audience. The individual chapters are mixtures of reviews and original research.

The book covers five broad issues of livestock nutrition. The Fifth International Kinin Congress (Nov. 29-Dec. 3, 1987) provided a forum for the exchange of information and ideas on the kallikrein-kinin system. The participation of more than 350 scientists from 23 countries reflects the widespread interest and international scope of research activity in the physiological and pathological functions of the kallikrein-kinin system. A total of 275 papers including posters were presented, attesting to the unquestioned success of this Congress. The modern history of polyamines dates back to 1958 when the Tabors and Rosenthal first described the outlines of their biological synthesis. From then on, and particularly in the last ten years, a veri table explosion of Literature, characterized by thousands of papers, has witnessed the interest of the scientific community toward these molecules. Perhaps the old statement that "polyamines are molecules in search of a function" is no longer true today. A large number of effects exerted by these simple molecules are well known, and in many cases the mechanisms underlying these effects have been elucidated. The first section of the volume is entirely devoted to the enzymology and molecular biology of ornithine decarboxylase. Since its discovery by Gale more than forty years ago, this can be considered among the most widely studied enzymes in biology, and one of the most complex models in enzyme regulation. The mechanism of control of the enzyme activity at the transcriptional, post-transcriptional and post-translational levels, as well as the fine regulation by antizyme, are discussed in detail. The second group of contributions deals wi th AdoMet decarboxylase, propylamine transferase, polyamine oxidase and the other enzymes related to polyamine interconversion and regeneration.

The first meeting of this series of symposia convened in Tel Aviv, Israel, and since then meetings have taken place every three years in various parts of the world. The second meeting was held in Baden, Austria, the third in Madrid, Spain, the fourth in Maastricht, the Netherlands, and fifth in San Diego, California. The Vlth meeting in Hakone marked the first such symposium held in Asia. On occasion of publishing these books, I would like to describe how research in this field has evolved in Japan. Early in the 1950s, I was engaged in clinical practice treating various rheumatic diseases as an orthopedicist, and found that a substantial percentage of our patients had symptoms apparently compatible with gout. During the 1960s, the number of these gouty patients increased, and in the 1970s, research on the pathogenesis of gout was performed on the basis of approximately 2,000 cases of this disease, together with precise epidemiological studies concerning gouty and hyperuricemic individuals. Data derived from the two kinds of study had greatly changed the notion that gout was a rare disease among Japanese. My clinical studies have been succeeded by research at the molecular level on various purine metabolic abnormalities, including not only gout but also other diseases with various symptoms of wide clinical spectra.

We were able to avoid simultaneous sessions and still keep the scientific program to four days by using poster sessions followed by plenary debate on each poster. To paraphrase the British physicist David Bohm, we tried to avoid an ordinary discussion, in which people usually stick to a relatively fixed position and try to convince others to change. This situation does not give rise to anything creative. So, we attempted instead to establish a true dialogue in which a person may prefer and support a certain point of view, but does not hold it nonnegotiab1y. He or she is ready to listen to others with sufficient sympathy, and is also ready to change his or her own view if there is a good reason to do so. Our Society is in its "teen" years, and there are even some arguments about its exact age. Many newer members have raised questions concerning the history of the Society. For this reason, I have asked one of the "founding fathers", D. Bruley, to prepare a brief account of the birth and early history of the Society which appears on the following page.
