Book excerpt: Can Minecraft Education Edition improve student engagement and improve student in the 21st-Century skills of communication, collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking which are the common core 4 C’s but also common to project-based learning? As an educator and parent of children who engage in Minecraft at home the answer to this question is yes. While serving as the executive director of technology for a Michigan public school district I partnered with a teacher allowing me to research the effectiveness of Minecraft Education Edition on student growth and engagement in a classroom environment. This research was critical for not only the purposes of this research assignment but also determining if the platform would be adopted district wide. Minecraft Education Edition is a modified version of the traditional consumer Minecraft product with many built in controls and capabilities that are especially useful in an education environment. This paper starts with a detailed description of Minecraft Education comparative to the traditional definition of a game, definition of project-based learning, research defined benefits of game usage in the classroom and the experience of a teacher who implemented Minecraft Education Edition into her daily curriculum through the quantitative and qualitative data collected. The information presented will provide the answer to the question did Minecraft Education Edition have an impact on student growth and the project-based learning experience.
