Book Unfettering Poetry

Download or read book Unfettering Poetry written by J. Robinson and published by Springer. This book was released on 2006-04-29 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book calls attention to the pervasive but largely unacknowledged poetics of the 'Fancy' evident in poetry written during the British Romantic period. These poetics, Robinson demonstrates, are an early nineteenth-century version of what will become the visionary, experimental, open-form poetics of the twentieth-century.

Book The Problem of Consciousness in Modern Poetry

Download or read book The Problem of Consciousness in Modern Poetry written by Hugh Underhill and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1992-07-31 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modernist aesthetics have been identified with a sense of cultural crisis, defined by its distance from an ideal of unified consciousness. This original study examines the struggle toward that ideal of unitary subjective experience in modern British and Irish poetry from Hardy to Ted Hughes. Hugh Underhill argues that the poetry's emphasis on inner states underrepresents the extent to which the crisis is in fact socio-historically determined.

  • Author : Valerie Ritter
  • Publisher : State University of New York Press

  • ISBN : 1438435673

Download or read book K ma s Flowers written by Valerie Ritter and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2011-09-01 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kama's Flowers documents the transformation of Hindi poetry during the crucial period of 1885-1925. As Hindi was becoming a national language and Indian nationalism was emerging, Hindi authors articulated a North Indian version of modernity by reenvisioning nature. While their writing has previously been seen as an imitation of European Romanticism, Valerie Ritter shows its unique and particular function in North India. Description of the natural world recalled traditional poetics, particularly erotic and devotional poetics, but was now used to address sociopolitical concerns, as authors created literature to advocate for a "national character" and to address a growing audience of female readers. Examining Hindi classics, translations from English poetry, literary criticism, and little-known popular works, Ritter combines translations with fresh literary analysis to show the pivotal role of nature in how modernity was understood. Bringing a new body of literature to English-language readers, Kama's Flowers also reveals the origins of an influential visual culture that resonates today in Bollywood cinema.

Book Rain

  • Author : Don Paterson
  • Publisher : Farrar, Straus and Giroux
  • Release : 2014-09-09
  • ISBN : 1466880686
  • Pages : 87 pages

Download or read book Rain written by Don Paterson and published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. This book was released on 2014-09-09 with total page 87 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this, his first volume of original verse since the award-winning Landing Light, Don Paterson is found writing at his most memorable and direct. In an assembly of masterful lyrics and monologues, he conjures a series of fables and charms that serve both to expose us to the unsettling forces within the world and to offer some protection against them. Whether outwardly elemental in their address or more personal in their direction, these poems—addressed to the rain and the sea, to his young sons or beloved friends—never shy from their inquiry into truth and lie, embracing everything in scope from the rangy narrative to the tiny renku. Rain, which includes the winner of this year's Forward Prize for the Best Individual Poem and an extended elegy for the poet Michael Donaghy, is Paterson's most intimate and manifest collection to date.

Book The Problem of God and Other Poems

Download or read book The Problem of God and Other Poems written by Paul Leary and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2018-11-14 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The poems contained in this volume are the fruit of a lifetime spent reading and writing poetry. Taken as a whole, these poems are a window into the heart and mind of the man who wrote them. They are offered to the reader as a bouquet of flowers, the kind of flowers one might find growing amid the ashes and cinders on the side of an old railroad track and tied up with string. If there is a unifying theme to be found in these poems, it is faith. It is not simply a belief in a supreme being, though that too can be found here, but faith in ourselves. It is a belief that if, during the dark times, we can keep faith with the divine fire, the life force that burns within us, we will emerge triumphant. The author hopes that his readers will find that faith written into his poems and, more importantly, in themselves.

Book excerpt: WINNER OF THE 2020 PULITZER PRIZE FOR POETRY Finalist for the 2019 National Book Award "100 Notable Books of the Year," The New York Times Book Review One Book, One Philadelphia Citywide Reading Program Selection, 2021 "By some literary magic—no, it's precision, and honesty—Brown manages to bestow upon even the most public of subjects the most intimate and personal stakes."—Craig Morgan Teicher, “'I Reject Walls': A 2019 Poetry Preview” for NPR “A relentless dismantling of identity, a difficult jewel of a poem.“—Rita Dove, in her introduction to Jericho Brown’s “Dark” (featured in the New York Times Magazine in January 2019) “Winner of a Whiting Award and a Guggenheim Fellowship, Brown's hard-won lyricism finds fire (and idyll) in the intersection of politics and love for queer Black men.”—O, The Oprah Magazine Named a Lit Hub “Most Anticipated Book of 2019” One of Buzzfeed’s “66 Books Coming in 2019 You’ll Want to Keep Your Eyes On” The Rumpus poetry pick for “What to Read When 2019 is Just Around the Corner” One of BookRiot’s “50 Must-Read Poetry Collections of 2019” Jericho Brown’s daring new book The Tradition details the normalization of evil and its history at the intersection of the past and the personal. Brown’s poetic concerns are both broad and intimate, and at their very core a distillation of the incredibly human: What is safety? Who is this nation? Where does freedom truly lie? Brown makes mythical pastorals to question the terrors to which we’ve become accustomed, and to celebrate how we survive. Poems of fatherhood, legacy, blackness, queerness, worship, and trauma are propelled into stunning clarity by Brown’s mastery, and his invention of the duplex—a combination of the sonnet, the ghazal, and the blues—is testament to his formal skill. The Tradition is a cutting and necessary collection, relentless in its quest for survival while reveling in a celebration of contradiction.
