Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mimosa, and Other Poems Mimosa. Out of the depths of the mercy of God The blessings and comforts of man arise, And out of the depths of the human heart The bitterest woes of the flesh are led By Passion, the parent of all our woe. The story I tell, it is one of woe - How evil passions came out of the depths, Falsehood and jealousy, hatred and fear, And bore a soul from the home of its bliss, Out unto misery, hopeless and long. Many a tempest in a brain I've seen, When the heart sickened and the senses failed; When every feature bore the mark of pain And agony which had no utterance, But burned within, like a consuming fire Devouring at the with'ring roots of life! -- Pluriel provides a composite snapshot, taken from a few particular angles, of the variety of poems written in Canada over the past few decades. In shaping this anthology the editors were attracted to the diverse cultural and social responses evident in the work of poets writing in English and French, both across Canada, and in particular in Quebec and other French-speaking regions of the country. Each poem is offered in its original language and in translation.

Book excerpt: This historic collection, the first of its kind, is devoted to the discussion of Italian-Canadian writers publishing in English, in French or in Italian. These critical essays include analyses of some important writing: F.G. Paci's Black Madonna, the poetry of Mary di Michele and Pier Giorgio Di Cicco, the plays of Marco Micone, Gens du Silence and Addolorata, the novels of Maria Ardizzi and many other titles. The ten contributors make significant additions to the study of Canadian literature: D.C. Minni examines the short story; Alexandre Amprimoz and Sante Viselli consider Italian-Canadian poetry; Roberta Sciff-Zamaro analyses Black Madonna; Robert Billings fathoms di Michels's verse; Frank Paci considers the task of the novelist. Fulvio Caccia's essay on the literary languages of Quebec is controversial as are Filippo Salvatore's arguments on the writer and politics. Antonio D'Alfonso speculates on future developments among the more than one hundred Italian-Canadian writers. In addition to editing the collection, Joseph Pivato introduces the volume with a long essay on ethnic history and literary criticism in Canada, includes another essay on Italian-language writers and concludes with a detailed bibliography and an index.

Book The Poems of Shelley Volume Three

Download or read book The Poems of Shelley Volume Three written by Jack Donovan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-05-22 with total page 780 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792-1822) was one of the major Romantic poets, and wrote what is critically recognised as some of the finest lyric poetry in the English language. This is the third volume of the five-volume The Poems of Shelley, which presents all of Shelley’s poems in chronological order and with full annotation. Date and circumstances of composition are provided for each poem and all manuscript and printed sources relevant to establishing an authoritative text are freshly examined and assessed. Headnotes and footnotes furnish the personal, literary, historical and scientific information necessary to an informed reading of Shelley’s varied and allusive verse. Most of the poems in the present volume were composed between autumn 1819 and autumn 1820. The poems written in response to the political crisis in England following the ‘Peterloo’ massacre in August 1819 feature largely, among them The Mask of Anarchy and 'An Ode (Arise, arise, arise!)'. The popular songs, which Shelley intended to gather into a volume to inspire reformers from the labouring classes, several accompanied by significantly new textual material recovered from draft manuscripts, are included, as are the important political works 'Ode to Liberty', 'Ode to Naples' and Oedipus Tyrannus, Shelley's burlesque Greek tragedy on the Queen Caroline affair. Other major poems featured include 'The Sensitive-Plant', 'Ode to the West Wind', 'Letter to Maria Gisborne', an exuberant translation from the ancient Greek of the Homeric 'Hymn to Mercury', and the brilliantly inventive 'The Witch of Atlas'. In addition to accompanying commentaries, there are extensive bibliographies, a chronology of Shelley’s life, and indexes to titles and first lines. Leigh Hunt's informative Preface of 1832 to The Mask of Anarchy is also included as an Appendix. The volumes of The Poems of Shelley form the most comprehensive edition of Shelley's poetry available to students and scholars.

Book Mary Di Michele

Book excerpt: Carefully examining the work of Mary di Michele, this collection of essays presents an in-depth analysis of one of the founders of Italian Canadian literature. Through poetry that explores humanity with frankness and sensitivity, di Michele became a dominant voice in Canadian literature, choosing to chronicle the experiences of ethnic minority women with her own brand of sharp imagery and memorable diction. Various contributors, including Nathalie Cooke, Lisa Bonato, Ian Williams, and Richard Harrison, analyze the full range of her work, paying special attention to Luminous Emergencies and Debriefing the Rose.
