Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Milton and Liberty Milton's political writings possess more than a biographical value - they have a message for our own time. The more democracy spreads the more it is to be desired that the people should be so inspired and guided that they will make a noble use of their freedom. Such inspiration and guidance are found pre-eminently in Milton. The people who follow his doctrine of liberty will make more of duties than of rights, and value rights mainly as the means of performing duties. They will use their power, not to compete with one another for material well-being or any private advantage, but for mutual service and the common good. Without such an ideal, democracy will only, as Mazzini has said, produce egotists who will carry the old passions and desires into. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Poetical Works of John Milton To endeavour to remedy that which has been well denominated by the first literary authority in England, a disgraceful defect in literature the want of such an edition, as, he fiatters himself, the present will be found - to restore milton's loftiest poem to its original purity; bringing it, by means of luminous critical and explanatory notes, within the comprehension of his humblest countrymen, and at a price which will enable all to become possessed of it - in fine, to do justice to the fame of the greatest epic poet of any age or country, by removing the prejudices which party zeal and hate had heaped on his memory -was pronounced a bold, if not an impracticable undertaking. That the publisher has been enabled to achieve all this, and bring the work to a triumphant close (although at an outlay which must, in the event of failure, have been ruinous), will ever be to him a source of the proudest gratulation. That he has done so, he has the collective testimony of the press, without a single exception, - of an already extensive and daily increasing circulation, - of many distinguished friends, Whose expressions of approbation, and still more substantial aid, he regrets he is not permitted to acknowledge more openly. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from With Milton and the Cavaliers There is, perhaps, no sadder career in the whole of English history than that of Charles I. The very designations by which he is known, mark, by their varying character, the changes through which he passed. He was Baby Charles, he was Charles I., and the White King - so styled by Lilly the Astrologer - then he became merely "the man Charles Stuart," at least in the mouths of many; and now, among those who look only on one side of the picture, he lives in memory always as Charles the Martyr. Between the first fond foolish name, given by his eccentric but indulgent father, and the last mournful appellation, yawns a gulf which represents a complete change in the English Monarchy. Book Milton s Minor Poems Classic Reprint

Download or read book Milton s Minor Poems Classic Reprint written by John Milton and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-27 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Milton's Minor Poems The poems, plays, essays, and stories in these small volumes are treated, first of all, as works of literature, which were written to be read and enjoyed, not to be parsed and scanned and pulled to pieces. A short life of the author is given, and a portrait, in order to help the student to know the real person who wrote the book. The introduction tells what it is about, and how it was written, and where the author got the idea, and what it means. The notes at the foot of the page are simply to give the sense of the hard words so that the student can read straight on without turning to a dictionary. The other notes, at the end of the book, explain difficulties and allusions and fine points. The editors are chosen because of their thorough training and special fitness to deal with the books committed to them, and because they agree with this idea of what a Gateway Series ought to be. They express, in each case, their own views of the books which they edit. Simplicity, thoroughness, shortness, and Clearness, - these, we hope, will be the marks of the series. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Milton's Fame on the Continent Milton was mentioned, but not as a poet, by P. Costar in his Memoire des gens de lettres celebres des pays etrangers and the Comte de Comminges, Louis XIV's ambassador at the court of Charles II, made, in 1663, his famous report to his royal master to the effect that the arts and sciences had passed to France, and that, if there were any vestiges left in England, 'ce n'est que dans la memoire de Bacon, de Morus, de Bucanan et, dans les derniers siecles, d'un nomme Miltonius qui s'est rendu plus infame par ses dangereux cerits que les bourreaux et les assassins de leur roi'. The lexicographers, C. Funccius, G. M. Konig, C. Gryphius, and V. Paravicini, give Milton brief notices in their biographical works, but they know him only as a political agitator, and especially as the author of Pro Populo Anglicano Defensio, a book to which universal attention had been drawn on the Continent by the fact of its having been publicly burned at Paris and Toulouse. In 1697, Bayle honoured Milton by devoting to him three pages of his Dictionary, this being the only English poet mentioned in the work. Still, it is obvious that it was not Milton the poet, but Milton the political writer, in whom Bayle was interested, and he was content to repeat at second hand that Paradise Lost 'passe pour l'un des plus beaux ouvrages de poesie que l'on ait vu en anglais', Paradise Regained being 'not nearly so good'. Book Retrospect of the Boston Tea Party

Download or read book Retrospect of the Boston Tea Party written by James Hawkes and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Retrospect of the Boston Tea-Party: With a Memoir of George R. T. Hewes, a Survivor of the Little Band of Patriots Who Drowned the Tea in Boston Harbour in 1773 Although the diversity of the human character, as well as its exterior form, appear to us infinite, each individual in the immense chain of being, has some efficiency in the purpose of the eternal mind. The wisdom and the council of men, whose inheritance is only obscurity and want, might often save the sinking fortunes of their country, and grace the triumphs of achievement. Yet such has been the order of this world, that public opinion has inclined to consign to oblivion those least ambitious of power and preferment. This trait in the disposition of man has marked the progress of society time immemorial. Two thousand years ago it was remarked by the historian Euthemenes, that the Grecian Republic was so occupied in distributing favours to idle and powerful men, it could not bestow a thought on useful and obscure citizens. The same opprobrium rests on the American people, in the infancy of their republic. Among them, also, a delusive influence has engendered an opinion of eminence connected with fortune, and a sense of debasement attending on poverty, which tend to render us too regardless of every advantage but that of the rich and insensible, to every indignity but that of the poor. This pernicious apprehension, occasionally, prepares men for the desertion of every duty, for submission to every dignity, and for the commission of every crime that can be accomplished in safety.
