Zero temperatures are exceedingly rare and 100 degree temperatures have been recorded only a very few times at the Weather Bureau. Statistics over a long per iod of time give Asheboro a yearly average of 132 clear days, 115 partly cloudy days and 118 cloudy days. Asheboro is located amidst a range of long - eroded and timber cov ered mountains, the Uwharrie Mountains, described by geologists as the weathered remnants of peaks which pre-dated the Great Smokies and in bygone ages rivalled the Alps in their grandeur.
