Book Millennials Retention and the Public Sector

Download or read book Millennials Retention and the Public Sector written by Jimmy Alcantar and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Millennial employees will soon become the majority of the workforce in the United States. Their tendency to "job hop" creates a problem for public sector agencies due to the negative consequences that follow turnover. High turnover can prove costly for the organization both financially and in other ways. Adapting to the propensities and values of millennial employees will be essential for the organization to retain them for more extended periods. The literature currently examines different retention strategies, but none touch upon the best retention strategies of millennial employees in the public sector due to the problem being so modern and new. The purpose of this project is to analyze the causes of turnover among Millennials in the public sector (more specifically in a local municipality in Southern California) and recommend managerial and organizational strategies that are likely to reduce turnover intentions or limit the worsening of the problem. Participants in this study will be surveyed through an in-person interview. The data will detail what retention strategies work best in retaining the incoming wave of millennial employees.

Book Millennials in the Public Sector

Download or read book Millennials in the Public Sector written by Erica Lesperance and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are currently 5 generations in the workforce: Baby Boomers, Generation X, and Millennials making up the greatest part. Leading a multigenerational workplace has become increasingly difficult for the public sector as Millennials in the United States will soon makeup the workforce majority (Harrington, 2017). A multigenerational workplace creates unique challenges due to differences caused by age, communication styles, values, life events, and expectations. We need research to address this issue, so we know exactly what Millennials expect from their management and what leadership styles they prefer. This study will assess millennial expectations from their workplace and management, and examine the dominant style of leadership currently in place. The research will focus on two leadership styles, transactional and transformational, and will include all workers, supervisors, and management. Data will be collected through surveys administered at each of the LA County Department of Public Social Services (DPSS) District offices through the employee emailing system. Findings from this study will be used to help management understand what leadership styles are preferred by employees of varying generations, and by doing so they will help ease tensions between generations, retain Millennials, and make for a more productive workplace.

Book excerpt: The Millennial generation is expected to comprise nearly 34% of the labor force in 2024 (U.S. Census Bureau, 2012). A significant catalyst for the growth pattern is exhibited by Baby Boomer cohort retirement and deaths among them in the United States (Pew Research Center, 2016). The majority of the Baby Boomer generation is historically connected with public sector work, but the composition of the generational workplace/workforce has been altered to exhibit diverse needs and contributions. The Millennial cohort has characteristics that directly align with the premise of Public Sector Organizations. However, other attributes fail to align with the Public Sector Organization's core characteristic of bureaucracy. Based on the Bureau of Labor Statistics (2014) the Millennial generation only made up 24.5% of government or public sector employees, compared to 33.7% in the private sector, and this statistic continues to be contemporarily disproportionate. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to identify and assess Public Sector Management strategies and interventions that would increase retention among the Millennial cohort in Public Sector Organizations. A qualitative study using a Thematic Analysis was done to examine whether a productive relationship between the United States Public Sector Organization and Millennial generation characteristics could increase retention. Based on an analysis of the research, the study finds that there is a significant relationship between the Millennial generation and the Public Sector Organization, which may cause an increase in retention if Public Sector Management aligns certain Public Sector Organization attributes to meet the needs of the Millennial generation.

Nine major themes emerged from the findings: social responsibility, organizational structure/bureaucracy, opportunities, nature of work, leadership, people and relationships, work-life balance, commitment, and security. The thesis discusses these themes and comments on the significance of the findings as possible motivation for future investigations into the Human Resources succession planning needs of public sector institutions.

Book Generation Gap and Its Impact on Public Sector

Download or read book Generation Gap and Its Impact on Public Sector written by Zhaowen (Vincent) Yang and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The generational differences bring challenges to management in many aspects, including leadership styles and employee retention, a top priority for public organizations. This absence of generation gap study is especially notable in the local government agencies where a lack of strategic planning in managing the issues associated with the generation gap can lead to problems with leadership and employee retention. This study aims to examine the generational differences in the Health Facilities Inspection Division (HFID) of Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, exploring the dynamic relationship of the generational effect on leadership styles and its impact on employee turnover, especially for Millennials in the Division. A mixed-method is adopted in this research project as a case study with four focus group interviews in the qualitative phase and one survey in the quantitative phase. Projected findings include: (1) At least three different generations working together in the Division; (2) The turnover rate differs from generation to generation with the millennial generation having the highest rate of turnover; (3) All generations in the Division reveal that the leadership styles affect their commitment to the organization, but the X-generation and millennial express stronger feelings about the correlation between management leadership styles and employee turnover. This study not only offers a framework for the management in the HFID to utilize a strategic plan to promote the commitment of employees. It also provides a method for other government agencies to address similar issues in the generation gap context.

Book Live to Work Or Work to Live a Study on Work life Balance and Other Motivational Factors for Millennials Working for the County of Los Angeles

Download or read book Live to Work Or Work to Live a Study on Work life Balance and Other Motivational Factors for Millennials Working for the County of Los Angeles written by Nelli Mirzoyan and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The workforce in the U.S. is undergoing a generational shift, as Millennials have taken over the largest portion of the workforce, which was previously occupied by Baby Boomers. With this change, public organizations face challenges such as intergenerational conflicts in the workplace, difficulty in recruiting and retaining Millennial talent, and preparation for transfer of knowledge from older generations to Millennials, who will become the leaders and managers of the future. Existing research on the topic of Millennials in the public sector shows that they have at least a minimal degree of difference in attitudes and values in comparison to other generations, which shapes their likelihood to enter and/or leave public organizations. In addition, researchers have reached some conclusions on what motivates Millennials in the public sector; however, there is not sufficient data to substantiate the greatest motivational factors for Millennials in local government. Therefore, the researcher proposes a qualitative research study comprised of semi-structured interviews, with the participants being current Millennial employees of Los Angeles County. The results of the research can provide suggestions for managers in the public sector to improve recruitment and retention of Millennials.

Book Public Sector Employee Motivation

Download or read book Public Sector Employee Motivation written by Rebecca Bernstorff and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the millennial generation is beginning to dominate the workforce, organizations in the public sector are facing challenges in hiring new talent. With the competition of the private sector, the public sector must consider updating the current stale structure of public organizations as it relates to employee motivation and retention. Based on millennial characteristics, the current motivational tactics in the public sector may not be appealing as graduate students look towards career paths. By reviewing previous research and studies on the themes of public sector leadership, intrinsic and extrinsic rewards, the availability of employee resources and the generational adaptability in the workplace, assumptions can be drawn on what exactly motivates people to join the public sector and retain talent. By surveying populations of the general public, graduate students, and City employees, conclusions can be drawn on the impact of motivational factors in the public sector.

Book PRESERVING THE PUBLIC SECTOR

Download or read book PRESERVING THE PUBLIC SECTOR written by Naketa R. Jones and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this qualitative hermeneutic phenomenological study was to explore how the public service millennial leader's lived experiences influence their workplace expectations as it relates to workplace longevity as public sector employees. 12 public service leaders within the City of Detroit were selected for this study because they voluntarily agreed to participate, they self-identified as a millennial, and they held a leadership position within the City of Detroit at the time of the study. Millennial leaders were chosen for this study because they are the future leaders of the U.S. workforce. By 2025, 75% of the workforce will comprise of millennials (Ng & Gossett; Fry, 2016; Henstra & McGowan, 2016). However, millennials are changing jobs every 18 months to 3 years, while many change industries completely. Local government is most threatened by this trend, reporting a 3-4% loss in workforce annually (Ng & Gossett; Fry, 2016; Henstra & McGowan, 2016). The existing literature indicates a disconnect between millennials who want to lead in the public sector, and their ability or willingness to be retained long-term. Key findings from the study indicate that millennials who work in the public sector have a defined life mission and purpose that is deeply rooted in familial and early life experiences. Millennials are also constantly seeking ways to fulfill their purpose and life's calling to serve. Adult development and public service motivational theories were used to frame the study. It was recommended that organizational leaders should understand the connection between familial influences and the millennial's mission, implement cultural honesty, understand what millennials are constantly seeking, provide clear pathways to success and goal attainment, and promote positive peer relationships. Recommendations for future research included understanding psychological contracts and their implications on unmet expectations, understanding millennial preferred leadership styles, and establishing entrepreneurship opportunities inside the organization.

Book Managing the Next Generation of Public Workers

Download or read book Managing the Next Generation of Public Workers written by Madinah F Hamidullah and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-09-16 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Managing the Next Generation of Public Workers is a fresh and energetic look at the changing climate of diversity in the public and nonprofit workplace. The workforce of the twenty-first century represents unparalleled complexity: Baby Boomers, GenX, GenY, and Millennials. Although that diversity may be challenging and often overwhelming for public managers, Madinah Hamidullah emphasizes the potential strengths that can be drawn from complex multigenerational relationships. This handbook offers public and nonprofit managers the tools necessary to address generational differences and questions such as: • How do the newer generations in the workplace differ on such fundamentals as work ethic, family values, and retirement horizons? • Are they recruited differently and do they expect a different mix of benefits—perhaps a better work-life balance as a tradeoff for a lower salary? • How can diverse, generational perspectives in the workplace add value by questioning old, traditional assumptions? • Will approaches to organizational decision making necessarily change as new generations take over? The book is for public and nonprofit managers who recognize the challenges of managing a multigenerational workforce, and are therefore seeking helpful insights. This volume is a roadmap not only for human resource (HR) managers, but for all managers who must address the complexities of the human condition—complexities that are complicated by the most rapid succession of workforce generations that we have yet seen.

Book Making the Public Service Millennial

Download or read book Making the Public Service Millennial written by Liza Ireni Saban and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2022-11-01 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Making the Public Service Millennial explores how a new generation of public service employees affects the dynamics of continuity and change in public management and ethics. The book begins with the premise that Generation Y poses new challenges for public management, which will lead to changes in work-related values, rules, structures, and behaviors in the public service system. Will the soon-future leaders of today's public organizations pose new challenges for public management? How will this cohort cope with ethically-questionable behaviors? Given these questions, the potential strategic value of an empirical, cohort-based approach to ethical decision-making in the public service suggests interesting managerial implications for the effective incorporation of ethics into the management of public organizations. With implications for many types of organizations, and particularly for public sector organizations in democratic societies, managers across organizations should view generational differences not merely as a demographic variable, but as manifestations of broader social trends that may undermine established public management practices and organizational climates.

Book Managing the New Workforce

This volume represents the most up-to-date research on the changes and issues from an international cast of generational researchers. Shifting demographics around the world have created a unique historical phenomenon in which a large cohort of employees (i.e., post-war Baby Boomers) are nearing retirement, and a new cadre of younger workers are being recruited to replace them. These twenty-something year-olds, often referred to as ÔGen YÕ or Millennials, represent the workforce of the future and come with their own set of expectations, demands, and work habits. The contributors to this volume, drawn from countries around the world, document the cultural, historical, and social context surrounding this phenomenon. The international perspective makes it possible to examine cross-cultural similarities and differences in HRM practices. This timely book provides an understanding of the new workforce in multiple countries and settings and a valuable reference as scholars and employers seek to understand the values, beliefs, and expectations of the next generation of workers. While scholars and instructors will find this book indispensable, the book will also have implications for domestic and multinational employers, managers, HR practitioners, and career counselors.

Book A Study on Generational Differences in the Public Sector

Download or read book A Study on Generational Differences in the Public Sector written by Vanessa Valencia and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the last several years, the makeup of the workforce in the public sector has changed. With the influx of Baby Boomers entering retirement, the Government Business Council (2012) predicted that the public sector would need to hire over 200,000 employees in the last couple of years and in the years to come. With one generation leaving, two new generations are entering the workforce, the Millennials. A considerable body of research about the impact of generational gaps in the workforce has been conducted in the past. Most of the research conducted has focused on Baby Boomers and Generation Xers. Research has not only shown that there are generational differences, but it has also demonstrated that generational cohorts differ in their work values. Most of the literature describes generational differences as work attitudes and technological advances. This study will uniquely focus on work values, such as job satisfaction and workplace commitment. This study examines the importance of understanding how generational gaps affect communication in the workplace. This study uniquely looks at the Los Angeles County Workforce Development, Aging and Community Services Department and evaluates if generational differences negatively affect interoffice communication. This study will focus on Baby Boomers, Generation Xers, and Millennial employees from Los Angeles County's Workforce Development, Aging & Community Services department. The research will be conducted at the East Los Angeles Community Senior Center. A survey will be created and administered to 30 employees via Survey Monkey. Possible concerns with the external and internal validity of this study will be presented in the research paper.
