Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many centuries, the job of everyday soldiers, the "grunts," was the same-"see the hill, take the hill." But the combat role of today's U.S. soldier has undergone a radical change. The recent revolution in the art of soldiering in America emphasizes a smaller, but more highly specialized and technologically equipped, armed force. Now, even everyday soldiers in America's armed forces specialize in elite combat skills that use the very latest high-tech equipment. After basic training, many of today's recruits continue advanced training in one of the new emerging combat specialties, such as urban, mountain and arctic warfare; amphibious, underwater and small boat operations; modern cavalry combat; sniping; military intelligence and psychological warfare; search and rescue procedures, and combat engineering. In lively and entertaining prose, military historian Sam Southworth describes these emerging combat specialties-as well as the training and equipment for each-that characterize America's fighting force today.

Book Strengthening the Military Family Readiness System for a Changing American Society

Download or read book Strengthening the Military Family Readiness System for a Changing American Society written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2019-10-25 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. military has been continuously engaged in foreign conflicts for over two decades. The strains that these deployments, the associated increases in operational tempo, and the general challenges of military life affect not only service members but also the people who depend on them and who support them as they support the nation â€" their families. Family members provide support to service members while they serve or when they have difficulties; family problems can interfere with the ability of service members to deploy or remain in theater; and family members are central influences on whether members continue to serve. In addition, rising family diversity and complexity will likely increase the difficulty of creating military policies, programs and practices that adequately support families in the performance of military duties. Strengthening the Military Family Readiness System for a Changing American Society examines the challenges and opportunities facing military families and what is known about effective strategies for supporting and protecting military children and families, as well as lessons to be learned from these experiences. This report offers recommendations regarding what is needed to strengthen the support system for military families.

Book Retention of Military Skills Acquired in Basic Combat Training

Download or read book Retention of Military Skills Acquired in Basic Combat Training written by Robert D. McDonald and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Performance data were collected in the three general Basic Combat Training proficiency areas (rifle marksmanship, physical combat fitness, end-of-cycle tests) from independent groups of soldiers (60 per group) during BCT, during Advanced Individual Training (AIT) and Combat Support Training (CST), and for permanent-party personnel in the Army six to 12 months. These data were collected at three U.S. Army Training Centers under comparable conditions. Results on the three areas tested indicated a general performance decrement over the one-year period sampled. While these performance decrements were statistically significant, the percentage decrements from the BCT level were relatively small and their practical significance is open to question. (Author).
