Book Maritime Security in the Indo Pacific

Download or read book Maritime Security in the Indo Pacific written by Mohan Malik and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2014-09-24 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the twenty-first century, the Indo-Pacific, which spans from the western Pacific Ocean to the western Indian Ocean along the eastern coast of Africa, has emerged as a crucial geostrategic region for trade, investment, energy supplies, cooperation, and competition. It presents complex maritime security challenges and interlocking economic interests that require the development of an overarching multilateral security framework. This volume develops common approaches by focusing on geopolitical challenges, transnational security concerns, and multilateral institution-building and cooperation. The chapters, written by a cross-section of practitioners, diplomats, policymakers, and scholars from the three major powers discussed (United States, China, India) explain the opportunities and risks in the Indo-Pacific region and identify specific naval measures needed to enhance maritime security in the region. Maritime Security in the Indo-Pacific opens by introducing the Indo-Pacific and outlining the roles of China, India, and the United States in various maritime issues in the region. It then focuses on the security challenges presented by maritime disputes, naval engagement, legal issues, sea lanes of communication, energy transport, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, as well as by nontraditional threats, such as piracy, terrorism, and weapons proliferation. It compares and contrasts the roles and perspectives of the key maritime powers, analyzing the need for multilateral cooperation to overcome the traditional and nontraditional challenges and security dilemma. This shows that, in spite of their different interests, capabilities, and priorities, Washington, Beijing and New Delhi can and do engage in cooperation to deal with transnational security challenges. Lastly, the book describes how to promote maritime cooperation by establishing or strengthening multilateral mechanisms and measures that would reduce the prospects for conflict in the Indo-Pacific region.

Book International Maritime Security Law

Download or read book International Maritime Security Law written by James Kraska and published by Martinus Nijhoff Publishers. This book was released on 2013-04-15 with total page 965 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International Maritime Security Law by James Kraska and Raul Pedrozo defines an emerging interdisciplinary field of law and policy comprised of norms, legal regimes, and rules to address today's hybrid threats to the global order of the oceans. Worldwide shipping commerce, fishing fleets, pleasure craft, and coastal states are exposed to the menace of offshore terrorism, weapons of mass destruction, piracy, smuggling, robbery, marine insurgency and anti-access threats. Land-based institutions and maritime constabulary forces operate within an increasingly integrated network that blends elements of humanitarian law, human rights law, criminal law, and law of the sea, with inspection regimes, commercial enterprise, and marine safety and environmental stewardship. The new authorities fuse together a global maritime partnership among states, international organizations and commercial interests to protect the maritime commons from the most dangerous risks and hazards.

Book The International Law of the Sea

Download or read book The International Law of the Sea written by O. P. Sharma and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The law of the sea has undergone more change in the last 50 years than it has in the previous 400. All naval operations are meant to be carried out within the framework ofinternational law, which now centres around the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, 1982. An understanding of today's law of the sea is critical for domestic as well as international maritime trade and inevitably of course, for national security. This book provides clarity on what the legitimate use of ocean space is and what is not, examining the new jurisdictional boundaries or functional divisions of the oceans into several maritime zones along with their military implications.--Résumé de l'éditeur.

Chapters cover a range of issues including: the principle of the peaceful use of outer space, passive military uses, and multilateral negotiations to prevent an arms race in outer space; structural change of international law and the common heritage of mankind principle; and proposals for a multilateral agreement and the creation of an International Organisation for Common Security in Outer Space.

Book Military Assistance on Request and the Use of Force

Download or read book Military Assistance on Request and the Use of Force written by Erika De Wet and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-03-26 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In countries such as Syria, Iraq, South Sudan, and Yemen, internationally recognized governments embroiled in protracted armed conflicts, and with very little control over their territory, have requested direct military assistance from other states. These requests are often accepted by the other states, despite the circumvention of the United Nations Security Council and extensive violation of international humanitarian law and human rights. In this book, Erika De Wet examines the authority entitled to extend a request for (or consent to) direct military assistance, as well as the type of situations during which such assistance may be requested, notably whether it may be requested during a civil war. Ultimately, De Wet addresses the question of if and to what extent the proliferation of military assistance on the request of a recognized government is changing the rules in international law applying to the use of force.
