Book excerpt: Despite the fact that he had been trying to withdraw from the world of finance since the early 1980s, Harry's karma always presented situations that managed to keep him in the game. The common thread to these ongoing business dealings now seems, in one way or another, to represent a form of a breach of contract ' either by private parties or the Government. After retiring from a highly successful executive career in the industrial sector, Peggy has now joined Harry to help him fight his way out of his assorted entanglements. Here in Volume IV, we see how these situations evolved and how they are dealt with in a world gone wild with excessive debt creation and social engineering. Throughout it all, Harry and Peggy manage to find comedy in all this social and financial tragedy by treating the whole mess as though it were a soap opera.

Book Multi Criteria Methods for Alternative Dispute Resolution

Download or read book Multi Criteria Methods for Alternative Dispute Resolution written by Stuart S. Nagel and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1990-12-07 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work examines the topic of dispute resolution, specifically the multi-criteria approach that seeks to arrive at a conclusion that is mutually beneficial to both sides. Through the use of decision-aiding software, the multi-criteria approach can allow each side to give on various criteria that are not important to it, but are important to the other side. In this way, a super-optimum solution may even be met, in which both sides receive something significantly better than they had expected. Such a result is very difficult, if not impossible, to achieve, Stuart Nagel points out, in traditional single-dimension dispute resolution. Nagel and Mills describe the nature of multi-criteria dispute resolution utilizing decision-aiding software. The first part of the book clarifies the general character of computer-aided negotiation, computer-aided mediation, and super-optimizing dispute resolution. Part two guides the reader through the use of Policy/Goal Percentaging (P/G%) decision-aiding software, centering on general decision-making, negotiation, mediation, and prediction of outcomes. Multi-criteria resolution in the context of rule-making and legal policy disputes is the focus of part three, where such matters as determining initial alternatives and criteria, resolving deadlocks, and arriving at super-optimum solutions are discussed. Part four emphasizes dispute resolution in the context of rule-applying and litigation disputes, as well as mediation at the international level and between lawyers and clients. The final part deals with future applications, such as computer-aided mediation and group decision-making with phone modems. The book's combination of decision-aiding software, arbitration-mediation, and super-optimum expansionist decision-making brings a truly innovative approach to the topic of dispute resolution. This volume should be a welcome addition to academic, legal, and public libraries, and a valuable reference work for lawyers, law students, and legal professors and researchers.

Book excerpt: In Cook's Science, the all-new companion to the New York Times-bestselling The Science of Good Cooking, America's Test Kitchen deep dives into the surprising science behind 50 of our favorite ingredients--and uses that science to make them taste their best. From the editors of Cook's Illustrated, and the best-selling The Science of Good Cooking, comes an all-new companion book highlighting 50 of our favorite ingredients and the (sometimes surprising) science behind them: Cook's Science. Each chapter explains the science behind one of the 50 ingredients in a short, informative essay--topics ranging from pork shoulder to apples to quinoa to dark chocolate--before moving onto an original (and sometimes quirky) experiment, performed in our test kitchen and designed to show how the science works. The book includes 50 dynamic, full-page color illustrations, giving in-depth looks at individual ingredients, "family trees" of ingredients, and cooking techniques like sous vide, dehydrating, and fermentation. The 400+ foolproof recipes included take the science into the kitchen, and range from crispy fried chicken wings to meaty-tasting vegetarian chili, coconut layer cake to strawberry rhubarb pie.

Book Survival at Stake

Download or read book Survival at Stake written by Poorva Joshipura and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2023-10-23 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With science now recognizing animal consciousness, intelligence, emotion and even morality, there must come an awareness of our own moral responsibilities towards other beings. But there's another reason to consider animals' well-being-because it is intertwined with our own. In Survival at Stake, leading animal rights activist Poorva Joshipura argues passionately that, evolutionarily, humans are far more like other animals than we care to believe. She examines how hunting wildlife leads to pandemics and epidemics, which, in turn, harm us; how the production of meat destroys forests and causes climate change, which, in turn, destroys us; how blood sports hurt both humans and animals; how leather production damages the environment and human health; how animal experimentation is often a threat to public health; how cruelty to animals leads to violent crimes; and so on. It is Joshipura's view that if we reject speciesism-the belief in human superiority-and accept that we are animals too, irrevocably interconnected to other species, from the largest elephant to the smallest bee, and a part of, rather than holding dominance over, nature, we can take the necessary steps towards the betterment of all the planet's inhabitants.

Inside its pages, you’ll find 22 funny essays on subjects such as the following: - Being a new parent - Accidentally founding a boy band on a cruise ship - Getting angry at Philadelphia Eagles fans - Admiring my grandparents’ belief in werewolves - Celebrating my favorite West Coast portable toilet manufacturer I wrote Mild Buffoonery as a fan of Jenny Lawson and David Sedaris, so if you like their stories, you might like mine, too. Some are embarrassing, some are heartfelt, and some are just plain weird. All of them are true.
