Book Mike the Bike Again

Download or read book Mike the Bike Again written by Ted Macauley and published by Veloce Publishing. This book was released on 2018-11-20 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In June 1978, eleven years after he quit Grand Prix motorcycle racing, Mike Hailwood returned to the Isle of Man TT races, probably the most prestigious and certainly the most demanding road race in the world. On a privately entered V-twin Ducati he won the Formula One race, beating the works Hondas of Phil Read and the late John Williams, and breaking the lap and race records. It may have seemed a fluke; it certainly was a fairy-tale - until 1979. Fifth in the Formula One race, despite losing top gear and his battery, first in the Senior, and second by only 3.4 seconds in the Classic - probably the finest and closest-fought race the Island has ever seen. Hailwood proved, if anyone doubted, that he was still the greatest motorcycle racer of all time. Mike the Bike - Again, written by his manager and friend, Ted Macauley, is the account of his dramatic comeback, from the original wild idea to his final race. More than this, though, it is a study of a remarkable man in a remarkable world, and of the races, the machines, and the men who ride them.

Book Make Haste Slowly

Download or read book Make Haste Slowly written by Michelle Ann Duff and published by mad8 Pub.. This book was released on 1999 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Make Haste Slowly chronicles the grand prix motorcycle racing career of Canadian Mike Duff, the first North American and only Canadian ever to win a world championship grand prix race. Duff won three GP events, the 1964 250 Belgian GP at Spa Francorchamps, the 1965 125 Dutch GP at Assen The Netherlands and the 1965 250 Finnish GP at Imatra Finland. In 1964 Duff finished 3rd in the 350 world championship riding a private 350 AJS 7R single. In 1965 riding a factory Yamaha RD56 250 twin Duff finished 2nd in the 250 world championship. He never won a world title nor an Isle of Man TT, but he rode some of the most exotic racing machines ever built on race courses throughout the Grand Prix Continental Circus. He rode and conquered the intricacies of the Isle of Man TT and forever instilled its magic in his veins. He accelerated along glamorous racing circuits that are but names in a book to most, and he mixed it with the best of the world's motorcycle racers and often emerged victorious. During the 1960s, when the Japanese manufacturers began their dominance of GP racing, Duff had the best seat in the house to watch the titanic battles for first place between the stars of the time, riders like Mike Hailwood, Phil Read, Jim Redman Giacomo Agostini, Luigi Taveri and Bill Ivy. Share these experiences with the author in minute detail from the perspective of Duff's seat aboard a factory Yamaha RD56 or RA97, a Matchless G50 or AJS 7R, or the legendary AJS Porcupine. A story of courage, disappointment and reward, Make Haste Slowly is a must read for all motorcycle racing fans. Duff has stood alone atop a winner's rostrum in silence to his country's national anthem then raised his arms to the tumultuous cheers of thousands all proclaiming an accomplishment that was singularly his. What four times world champion, New Zealander Hugh Anderson says about Make Haste, SLowly - A tale of human endeavour with a truly unique ending; I truly enjoyed it.

Book Motorsport s Military Heroes

Download or read book Motorsport s Military Heroes written by Bryan Lightbody and published by Pen and Sword Military. This book was released on 2022-09-08 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Motorsport has many iconic names attached to it. It has many that are celebrated as heroes in their chosen sport. However, what perhaps is less well known is how many of the motorsport icons of the twentieth century carried out acts of real-life bravery, many during war time, but some in selfless acts of bravery in saving the lives of their fellow competitors. Some of the iconic names of motorsport are linked to the great conflicts of the twentieth century. Enzo Ferrari served during World War One, the most revered of the 1920s Bentley Boys were all World War One veterans such as John Duff, Bernard Rubin, Woolf Barnato, Sammy Davis and Glen Kidston. World War One American flying ace Eddie Rickenbacker was an Indianapolis 500 racing driver. Muriel Thompson, Military Medal, who became a World War One ambulance driver, was not only a chauffeur for suffragette Emeline Pankhurst, but raced at Brooklands before the war. Commentator Murray Walker was a World War Two tank commander, fellow commentator Raymond Baxter was a Spitfire pilot who was mentioned in dispatches for bravery. Carroll Shelby was a United States Army Airforce pilot and instructor with a reputation for great leadership. His friend, engineer and racing driver Ken Miles, served throughout the war as a specialist in tank recovery, landing as part of the D-Day operations. These are just a few of the most notable names from a group of men and women who risked all in conflict, before risking all on the track profiled in this book.
