Book Wild Ducks and Duck Foods of the Bear River Marshes Utah Classic Reprint

Download or read book Wild Ducks and Duck Foods of the Bear River Marshes Utah Classic Reprint written by Alexander Wetmore and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-29 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wild Ducks and Duck Foods of the Bear River Marshes, Utah It has been said in the foregoing that the supplies Of Seeds car ried over winter in the fruiting heads of the bayonet grass, or tule, are of importance as food fer the Wild ducks returning from the South in spring. AS these seeds are available practically through out the year they furnish a valuable source of sustenance. The burning of large areas, therefore to clear the marsh or to induce a fresh clean growth for ranging purposes is to be frowned upon, as it tends to destroy a certain proportion of the available stock of duck food. Many of the seeds are charred and destroyed by the flames, and though apart are not seriously harmed a largepropor tion of the'stockis. Liable to be washed away. And lost during the high water _incident to the breaking up of the winter covering of Ice In spring, and the subsequent floods due to melting snows in the foothills. While the practice of burning clears the marsh, it also destroys mats and tangles of dead vegetation that in many cases form necessary Shelters for the breeding ducks, insuring the successful hiding of their nests and later protecting the young until they are strong enough to venture into the Open. Book excerpt: This paper brings together the results of black-duck banding throughout North America, and attempts to show, for the benefit of sportsman and administrator alike, where the birds of Barnegat Bay, St. Clair Flats [St. Clair Flats Wildlife Area, Michigan], or any other important hunting area come from. Book Ducks at a Distance Classic Reprint

Download or read book Ducks at a Distance Classic Reprint written by Bob Hines and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ducks at a Distance Recognizing the species of ducks and geese can be rewarding to birdwatchers and hunters - and the ducks. Hunters can contribute to their own sport by not firing at those species that are either protected or scarce, and needed as breeders to restore the flocks. It can add to their daily limit; when extra birds of certain species can be taken legally, hunters who know their ducks on the wing come out ahead. Knowing a mallard from a merganser has another side: gourmets prefer a corn-fed mallard to the fish duck. Book The Green winged Teal

Download or read book The Green winged Teal written by Gaston Moisan and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The green-winged teal is the smallest of our ducks. It is widely distributed, nesting from Alaska to Newfoundland and from the norther tree limit to central California and Maine, and wintering from British Columbia and Newfoundland south to Venezuela. As interest in waterfowl increases and the supply becomes less certain, the idea of regulating harvest by species has increased. It becomes increasingly important therefore, to learn and describe the population characteristics of each of the game species. Because of the currently low population levels of important waterfowl species such as the mallard, black duck, canvasback and redhead, regulations governing the hunting of these choice species have been restrictive. Thus species like the green-winged teal become more important as sources of additional hunting opportunity, but despite its wide distribution and rank among the 20-odd species in the harvest, information is lacking about its status. The present work reports a study of the distribution, migration, hunting kill, survival, and status of the green-winged teal in the New World.

Book The Birds of Colorado Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Birds of Colorado Classic Reprint written by Wells Woodbridge Cooke and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-09 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Birds of Colorado The notes on migration given in the following table are designed to show the different time at which the same species of birds arrive at different places and altitudes in Colorado as compared with the time of their arrival in the same latitude farther east and at a lower altitude. St. Louis, Mo., is thirty miles farther north than Fort Lyon, Colo., and one hundred and twenty miles south of Loveland, Colo. Hence, according to latitude, the birds should arrive in St. Louis about the same time as at Fort Lyon. But it is found that in fact they reach St. Louis on the average about twelve days before they appear at Fort Lyon. The dates Of arrival seem to indicate an aver age difference Of six days between Fort Lyon and Loveland. The distance between these two places is one hundred and fifty miles, or an average movement for the birds of twenty-five miles per day. This agrees quite closely with the average of twenty-eight miles per day that was found to be the usual speed of migration in the Mississippi valley.
