Book Remittances in the Pacific Region

Download or read book Remittances in the Pacific Region written by Aiko Mineshima and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2007-02 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Remittances are large and have grown substantially over the past decade in the Pacific region. This primarily reflects the impact of emigration due to low growth and limited employment prospects at home. Many Pacific emigrants settle abroad with their families for long periods, but maintain close links with their relatives, villages and churches. The paper finds that the altruistic motive for remittances remains much stronger in the Pacific region than in the rest of Asia, where investment considerations increasingly appear to predominate, especially for the large share of single citizens working abroad for limited periods.

Book Migration and Transnationalism

Download or read book Migration and Transnationalism written by Helen Lee and published by ANU E Press. This book was released on 2009-08-01 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pacific Islanders have engaged in transnational practices since their first settlement of the many islands in the region. As they moved beyond the Pacific and settled in nations such as New Zealand, the U.S. and Australia these practices intensified and over time have profoundly shaped both home and diasporic communities. This edited volume begins with a detailed account of this history and the key issues in Pacific migration and transnationalism today. The papers that follow present a range of case studies that maintain this focus on both historical and contemporary perspectives. Each of the contributors goes beyond a narrowly economic focus to present the human face of migration and transnationalism; exploring questions of cultural values and identity, transformations in kinship, intergenerational change and the impact on home communities. Pacific migration and transnationalism are addressed in this volume in the context of increasing globalisation and growing concerns about the future social, political and economic security of the Pacific region. As the case studies presented here show, the future of the Pacific depends in many ways on the ties diasporic Islanders maintain with their homelands.

Book excerpt: Several South Pacific countries are heavily dependent on the inflows of private remittances from their nationals working abroad. Concerned that the remittances have not had a greater impact on generating employment and growth, the UNDP requested the ILO to undertake a comprehensive assessment of the factors influencing the volume and channels of remittances and how they are used by the recipients, and on the basis of this analysis to formulate a set of policy recommendations on how migrant remittances can be directed towards more economically productive investment.
