Book excerpt: Migmatites are highly heterogeneous rocks found in high-grade metamorphic environments; they are commonly encountered in the continental crust. Until now, many geologists have been deterred from working with migmatites because of their complex appearance and an unhelpful non-genetic nomenclature. In his Atlas of Migmatites, Dr. Edward Sawyer provides genetically based definitions and a system of nomenclature with which it will be possible to describe and map migmatites effectively and to understand how combinations of factors and processes produce a bewildering morphological diversity. Migmatites are produced by partial melting; to aid the reader in the identification of migmatites, the author describes and illustrates microstructures that can be used to infer the presence of melt or a melt-producing reaction. He also describes how geochemical data can be used to infer petrological processes involved in migmatite development. This book includes the results from two decades of research in whole-rock geochemistry, partial melting, microstructural analysis and experimental deformation of partially molten rocks. It contains information from an outcrop through to a grain scale. Exceptionally well illustrated, with 272 colour plates and accompanying detailed captions, the Atlas provides descriptions and analyses of migmatites not previously available.

Book Determination of Structural Successions in Migmatites and Gneisses

Download or read book Determination of Structural Successions in Migmatites and Gneisses written by A.M. Hopgood and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book to deal specifically with the procedures used in the analysis of structural relationships and the determination of structural successions in complexly deformed rocks such as migmatites and gneisses. The establishment of structural successions enables: The rigorous control of the dating of specific events in the deformational history by constraining the sites of the dated rocks within the structural succession; The establishment of the time span of orogenic events throughout the structural succession, and the rate of orogenic processes;Their comparison to be used as a basis for correlation between dismembered and separated crustal segments in continental reconstructions; The resolution of the complex relationships between deformed ore bodies and host rocks in high grade terranes, and hence determination of the structural control of ore bodies, an essential part of any successful geological exploration, and a precondition to efficient exploitation. With its new approach, and the use of practical field examples from various parts of the world, this highly illustrated work will form an invaluable reference resource for postgraduates, lecturers and researchers in the structural and isotope geology of high-grade metamorphic terranes, as well as for exploration and survey geologists working in the field. Dr Alaric M. Hopgood who holds an Honorary Readership at the University of St Andrews, Scotland, was a Reader in the Department of Geology there until 1995.

Book Petrogenesis of Metamorphic Rocks

Download or read book Petrogenesis of Metamorphic Rocks written by H.G.F. Winkler and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first edition of this book was published in 1965 and its French translation in 1966. The revised second edition followed in 1967 and its Russian translation became available in 1969. Since then, many new petrographie observations and experimental data elucidating reactions in metamorphie rocks have made a new approach in the study of metamor phic transformation desirable and possible. It is feIt that this new approach, attempted in this book, leads to a better understanding of rock metamorphism. The concept of metamorphie facies and subfacies considers asso cations of mineral assemblages from diverse bulk compositions as char acteristie of a certain pressure-temperature range. As new petrographie observations accumulated, it became increasingly difficult to accommo date this information within a manageable framework of metamorphic facies and subfacies. Instead, it turned out that mineral assemblages due to reactions in common rocks of a particular composition provide suita ble indieators of metamorphie conditions. Metamorphic zones, defined on the basis of mineral reactions, very effectively display the evolution of metamorphic rocks. Thus, the importance of reactions in metamor phic rocks is emphasized. Experimental calibration of mineral reactions makes it possible to distinguish reactions which are of petrogenetic sig nificance from those which are not. This distinction provides guidance in petrographie investigations undertaken with the object of deducing the physieal conditions of metamorphism. Within a metamorphie terrain, points indicating the same reaction constitute a line or a band, here designated by the term isoreaction-grad.
