Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Yogesh Moolchandani, a disreputable builder, is dead. All the signs say suicide but there was nothing wrong with his life. He had just cracked a deal and things were looking hale and hearty for him. He had recently even purchased an imported Volkswagen Jetta. CCTV footage from the night of his death shows him crashing into a toll booth at a speed of 180 km per hour on the Bandra-Worli Sea Link. The dealer he had purchased his car from had received five missed calls from him just five minutes prior to the time of the alleged crash. On the same night, in another part of town, Pranav Paleja, a criminal lawyer who works at the law chamber- Mangesh & Mangharam, tries his best to extricate his client-a troublesome drunk-from the clutches of the police. Although an upholder of the law himself, Paleja is pathologically incapable of following it in his day-to-day personal life. Since Pranav Paleja was settling a dispute with the man concerned only moments before the crash, the police land up at his doorstep. As the authorities try to find out why Yogesh was calling his car dealer frantically, the plot begins to thicken. Who, or rather what, killed Yogesh Moolchandani?

Book excerpt: “Let me in, let me in,” the Songman pleaded. What did these words mean? Kidnapped and tortured, Mary Meyers had no idea. Her only thought was to escape from the lyrical miscreant and his fiendish henchman, Dobson. When the opportunity came, Mary slipped away and traveled back home. Yet her house was cold, deserted. Too exhausted to leave, she huddled in a corner and fell asleep. Read McClaine discovered Mary’s frozen body late at night, and his only thought was to rush her to Bridgeport Hospital. However, upon reviving in the warmth of Read’s truck, Mary blatantly refused medical attention. What choice did he have but to take her to his cabin? Now Mary was warm, well-fed. If she could spend a few months in Read’s home and grow stronger, enhance her strange power, she could face the Songman again. Was there another reason she didn’t want to leave? Was she falling in love with Read McClaine, a man who detested marriage? It was time. The Songman was calling to her, willing her to return. Was she strong enough to defeat him? If she failed, her newfound friends would die, including the man she loved, Read McClaine.

And it succeeds, both in its celebration of our crazy culture and its fascinating analysis, through the poems, of popular myths that have stood the test of time." --Kliatt In the past few decades, poetry about and around popular culture has become a very hip contemporary art form. Download or read book Kingbird Highway written by Kenn Kaufman and published by HMH. This book was released on 2006-04-11 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An ornithologist’s account of his youthful, year-long, cross-country birdwatching adventure: “A fascinating memoir of an obsession.” —Booklist At sixteen, Kenn Kaufman dropped out of the high school where he was student council president and hit the road, hitching back and forth across America, from Alaska to Florida, Maine to Mexico. Maybe not all that unusual a thing to do in the seventies, but what Kenn was searching for was a little different: not sex, drugs, God, or even self, but birds. A report of a rare bird would send him hitching nonstop from Pacific to Atlantic and back again. When he was broke he would pick fruit or do odd jobs to earn the fifty dollars or so that would last him for weeks. His goal was to set a record—most North American species seen in a year—but along the way he began to realize that at this breakneck pace he was only looking, not seeing. What had been a game became a quest for a deeper understanding of the natural world. Kingbird Highway is a unique coming-of-age story, combining a lyrical celebration of nature with wild, and sometimes dangerous, adventures, starring a colorful cast of characters.

Book excerpt: A TIME, NPR, VOGUE, OPRAH DAILY, AND VULTURE BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR (SO FAR) One of TIME’s 100 Must-Read Books of 2022 “Ho's debut work is the perfect modern example of great American fiction. . . . You will love it.” —Jake Tapper “Intimate, cinematic. . . . The world Ho creates between the two women feels like one friend reading the other’s story, wishing she were there.” —The New York Times Book Review “[Fiona and Jane] is about an incredible lifelong friendship between two Asian American women growing up in Southern California—absolutely adored that book.” —Ailsa Chang, NPR’s “All Things Considered” “Intricately rendered. . . . Fiona and Jane celebrates a woman’s ability to be late, to show up in their own lives when and where they want to, to change their minds, to be lonely and to be in love, and to be respected regardless.” —The Washington Post A witty, warm, and irreverent book that traces the lives of two young Taiwanese American women as they navigate friendship, sexuality, identity, and heartbreak over two decades. Best friends since second grade, Fiona Lin and Jane Shen explore the lonely freeways and seedy bars of Los Angeles together through their teenage years, surviving unfulfilling romantic encounters, and carrying with them the scars of their families' tumultuous pasts. Fiona was always destined to leave, her effortless beauty burnished by fierce ambition—qualities that Jane admired and feared in equal measure. When Fiona moves to New York and cares for a sick friend through a breakup with an opportunistic boyfriend, Jane remains in California and grieves her estranged father's sudden death, in the process alienating an overzealous girlfriend. Strained by distance and unintended betrayals, the women float in and out of each other's lives, their friendship both a beacon of home and a reminder of all they've lost. In stories told in alternating voices, Jean Chen Ho's debut collection peels back the layers of female friendship—the intensity, resentment, and boundless love—to probe the beating hearts of young women coming to terms with themselves, and each other, in light of the insecurities and shame that holds them back. Spanning countries and selves, Fiona and Jane is an intimate portrait of a friendship, a deep dive into the universal perplexities of being young and alive, and a bracingly honest account of two Asian women who dare to stake a claim on joy in a changing, contemporary America.
