Download or read book Reveries written by Susan Newbold and published by . This book was released on 2021-11-15 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dictionary definition of reverie is a state of being pleasantly lost in one's thoughts. This book Reveries: Journaling in Place is the result of careful editing of the author's twenty-five artist journals containing images which were an attempt to capture her reveries which she wanted to share. These images come from international and national locales where the author has lived or traveled, and each have unique qualities. Newbold teaches a course called "The Illuminated Journal"-a workshop which combines painting, printmaking, drawing and writing and ends in a handmade journal which the students each create. The practice of journaling has been an important part of her artmaking which she is eager to share with the readers of this book. The book is a combination of images from the journals which are watercolors, prints, and line drawings often combined as mixed media. There is text as well which describes her inspiration in each locale. Water, trees, landscape and architecture are the muses that consistently attract her and lead her in many different directions of observation. The reader is left with more of a visual understanding of these elements. The book is written with the intent of inspiring others to adopt this type of visual meditation.

Book The American Painting Collection of the Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery

Download or read book The American Painting Collection of the Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery written by Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery and published by University of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 1988 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery houses one of the most highly regarded collections of twentieth-century American art anywhere, including paintings by Edward Hopper, Georgia O'Keeffe, Mark Rothko, Willem de Kooning, Marsden Hartley, Robert Motherwell, Robert Henri, Grant Wood, Frank Stella, and many more internationally renowned artists. Calling the Sheldon collection "exemplary," the art historian and critic Barbara Rose notes: "Because the collection does not reflect fashion, the misguided inspiration of much art collecting today, but is rather an effort of connoisseurship, and informed by an art historical viewpoint, it is certain to remain as durable and exciting tomorrow as it is today." The American Painting Collection of the Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery offers for the first time a full description of the collection, now numbering more than one thousand works, that has been nearly a century in the making. The first part of the book presents full-color reproductions of 101 of the most noteworthy paintings in the collection, each accompanied by a brief discussion of the artist and his or her work. The second part, or catalog, consists of a complete inventory of the collection, including for each painting its physical description, provenance, exhibition history, and publication history, as well as a black and white reproduction. Publication of the book coincides with a year-long celebration of the centennial of the Nebraska Art Association, the Sheldon Gallery's support group and one of the oldest continuous arts organizations in the country.

Download or read book Jewel City written by James A. Ganz and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2015-10-17 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Timed with the centennial of the Panama-Pacific International Exposition (PPIE) of 1915, Jewel City presents a large and representative selection of artworks from the fair, emphasizing the variety of paintings, sculptures, photographs, and prints that greeted attendees. It is unique in its focus on the works of art that were scattered among the venues of the expositionÑthe most comprehensive art exhibition ever shown on the West Coast. Notably, the PPIE included the first American presentations of Italian Futurism, Austrian Expressionism, and Hungarian avant-garde painting, and there were also major displays of paintings by prominent Americans, especially those working in the Impressionist style. This lavishly illustrated catalogue features works by masters such as Winslow Homer, John Singer Sargent, Claude Monet, Paul CŽzanne, Robert Henri, Edward Weston, Imogen Cunningham, Edvard Munch, Oskar Kokoschka, Umberto Boccioni, and many more. The volume also explores the PPIEÕs distinctive murals program, developments in the art of printmaking, and the legacy of the French Pavilion, which hosted an abundance of works by Auguste Rodin and inspired the founding and architecture of the Legion of Honor museum in San Francisco. A rich and fascinating study of a critical moment in American and European art history, Jewel City is indispensable for understanding both the United StatesÕ and CaliforniaÕs role in the reception of modernism as well as the regionÕs historical place on the international art stage. Published in association with the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. Exhibition dates: de Young Museum, San Francisco: October 17, 2015ÐJanuary 10, 2016
