Book Microstructural Analysis of Critical Geometries and Heat Treated Laser Powder Bed Fusion Produced Aluminum Alloy A356

Download or read book Microstructural Analysis of Critical Geometries and Heat Treated Laser Powder Bed Fusion Produced Aluminum Alloy A356 written by Melissa Trask and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Additive Manufacturing (AM) has garnered much attention due to the considerable advantages it offers over traditional manufacturing. Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF) is a common AM method for metals, particularly in aerospace, due to the complex components that traditional manufacturing methods are able to produce, albeit with difficulty. Aluminum alloys are among those that are being examined for use in the aerospace industry, as the trend for lightweight components continues. Therefore, an advantage emerges in combining the benefits of aluminum alloys such as A356 (Al-7Si-Mg) with those of LPBF. However, the combination has to be studied in detail before it can be put into practice. The objective of this work is to study the microstructure and mechanical properties that result from the manufacture of A356 through LPBF. In this work, the effect of the component geometry on the microstructure was studied. In order to better reflect the microstructure that could occur in real components, common geometries were selected to be studied. It was found that the geometry had a minimal effect on the microstructure. The build temperature was found to have a greater effect on the microstructure. The effect that heat treatment has on the microstructure and mechanical properties of LPBF A356 was also studied, as heat treatment is commonly applied to components used in aerospace. It was found that the build temperature also has an effect in the heat treatment, as the samples processed at 200°C were in an already overaged condition in the as-fabricated state. It was found that the heat treatment that resulted in the highest hardness was a T5 heat treatment, rather than the more typical T6 heat treatment. " --

Book Micromechanisms in Particle Hardened Alloys

Download or read book Micromechanisms in Particle Hardened Alloys written by J. W. Martin and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1980-07-10 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was first published in 1980. A great number of metallic materials in practical use owe their strength to the presence in their microstructure of particles of a hard precipitated phase. The text emphasises the importance of scientific rather than empirical methods in attempting to develop particle-hardened alloys. The author progresses from an elementary knowledge of metallurgy to theories relating to the deformation and fracture of alloys of this type. He also discusses the use of such theories to describe observations on both model materials and practical metals. After a discussion of the microstructures of these alloys, how they form and how to describe them quantitatively, their deformation and fracture behaviour at both low and elevated temperatures are examined.

Download or read book Influence of Heat Treatment on the Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of 6061 Aluminum Alloy written by and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The process of heat treatment is the method by which metals are heated and cooled in a series of specific operations that never allow the metal to reach the molten state. The purpose of the heat treatment is to cause desire changes in the metallurgical structure and thus in the properties of metal parts. The aim of this research is to study the influence of heat treatment and natural aging mechanism on the microstructure and mechanical properties of aluminum alloy 6061. The aluminum alloy 6061 sample heat treated using T4 method which is heat treated at 550°C, 575°C and 600°C and then naturally aged at ambient environment for 3 hours. After heat treated process, the effects were investigated in terms of microstructure using metallurgical analysis and mechanical properties by tensile tests and hardness test. Tensile tests show that the yield stress and UTS have high value when heat treated at 600°C where 103.28693 MPa and 195.246895 MPa meanwhile the Young modulus heat treated at 550°C have high value; 84417.95106 MPa. For heat treatment specimens, the high VHN is specimen's heat treated at 600°C which have value 85.7 and the lower VHN value is specimen's heat treated at 550°C with value 57.5. The heat treatment process result soft aluminum alloy 6061. Lastly for microstructure observation, different microstructure appear within different heat treatment temperature. From the data and result that already determined, it achieved the objectives and scope of this research.

Book Effect of Precipitate Hardening Treatment on Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Cast Aluminum Silicon Alloy A356

Download or read book Effect of Precipitate Hardening Treatment on Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Cast Aluminum Silicon Alloy A356 written by Benjunior Bindamin and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 57 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main objective of this work was to study the influence of the precipitate hardening treatment of the A356 aluminum silicon sand cast alloy. The experiment process was separated into three parts which was foundry laboratory, material laboratory, and inspection. In the foundry laboratory, the cast alloys was prepared by sand casting process and was melted in a diesel furnace. In the material laboratory, the casting was then treated with precipitate hardening treatment and followed by machining. The inspection was done to observe microstructure, tensile properties and hardness properties. The effect of the solution heat treatment and artificial aging holding time on the microstructure, tensile properties, and hardness properties of the alloy was analyzed. Three specimens were heat treated with a solution treatment at a same temperature of 540°C, was quenched in room temperature water followed by artificial aging at a same temperature of 170°C. The different parameters were holding times which were solution at 2 hours and aging 2 hours, solution at 2 hours and aging 6 hours, solution 6 hours and aging 6 hours. The microstructure were investigated and tested by optical microscope, tension test and Rockwell hardness test respectively. The result found was at 2 hours solution of 540 °C homogenization and saturation of magnesium and silicon in Į(Al) phase, spheroid of eutectic Si phase occurred. After solution treatment, 2 hours artificial aging at 170 °C produced hardening precipitates. Samples treated at 6 hours solution and 6 hours artificial aging achieved even higher tensile strength and hardness. The increased of holding time for solution and artificial aging increased precipitate hardening.

Book Mixed mode Model for Studying Microstructural Evolution of Precipitates Inside Aluminum Alloys

Download or read book Mixed mode Model for Studying Microstructural Evolution of Precipitates Inside Aluminum Alloys written by Tohid Naseri and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aluminum is one of the most used non-ferrous metal in the world with an enormous range of applications from simple kitchenware to advanced spacecraft. In applications where high mechanical properties are needed, like in the car industry, it is strongly required to improve the mechanical properties. As the final distribution of precipitates plays a crucial role in mechanical properties of these alloys, a better understanding of the microstructural evolution and kinetics of precipitation can help noticeably the design of the heat treatment process of aluminum alloys. However, due to the size and morphology of the precipitates, experimental studies of the precipitation required advanced characterization methods like transmission electron microscopy which is not an industrially favorable technique since it is costly and required a lot of technical expertise. Numerical investigation can be a desirable tool to model the evolution of the precipitates and the corresponding mechanical properties. This study presents a kinetic model of precipitation. Unlike many studies that mainly focus on the diffusion and surface energy, we consider interfacial mobility as an effective variable in a mixed-mode model. This variable not only provides us the possibility to study the precipitates’ evolution in multicomponent alloys but also can boost the calculation performance. Moreover, the other superiority of this model is the possibility of working with complex multiphase industrial Al alloys by considering the growth and the dissolution of different types of precipitates simultaneously.
